Health Curriculum 10 Month Plans - 5th & 6th Grade - Adapted and Editable

This packet includes 10-month, 4 week layout per month of adapted health curriculum plans for students in 5th and 6th grade. This product includes what health material students can learn and the instructional plan for what content can be taught during each month. Essential questions are provided for each week. This packet is useful, organized, and focuses on what should be taught weekly and monthly for students that need material broken down or taught at the adapted level to ensure their individual learning needs are met. This packet can be edited according to what is covered on a week to week basis.

Oct - Influences on our health, ways to reduce stress, different kinds of relationships, and communicating in a healthy way
Nov - Helping our families, ways to improve friendships, stages of life, heredity and being unique
Dec - Balanced diet, influences on what food we eat, how pathogens enter food, healthful weight
Jan - Hygiene, physical activity, staying safe when playing sports, sportsmanship
Feb - Reducing safety hazards at home, outside/in the community, handling emergencies, and how to prevent violence
March - What to say when offered drugs, the dangers of drinking alcohol, risks of using tobacco, abuse of drugs
April - Maintain healthy immune system, common signs of illness, cancer and how it affects the body, and chronic diseases
May - Making choices about spending money wisely, budgeting money, taking care of the community, and jobs within the health field.
June - improving the environment and protecting the water and land.

The 19th Amendment Adapted Notes and Review

This product was made for students to learn the following:
In this product, students will learn about the 19th Amendment, what it is, the timeline as to how the 19th Amendment was put into effect and just how long it took. Information about the process it took and how it was rejected by different parts of the government is shared ranging from 1878 to the November 1920 election, what the women's suffrage movement was, who was involved, and what they did, President Woodrow Wilson, Harry Burn, Senator Aaron A. Sargent, Ellen Clark Sargent, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony and the role that each of them had in the passing of the 19th Amendment, students will learn about Congress - the Senate and the House of Representatives, and will briefly learn about the 3 Branches of Government to help students understand which branch helped pass the 19th Amendment, students will briefly learn about who was involved in World War I and what happened at the end of World War I, why women became involved in World War I, what their roles were in World War I, what jobs women had during this time, and how this lead to the 19th Amendment. Students will also learn about how the 19th Amendment in 1869 was different from 1920 and why, how the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was important as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, students will also learn about when women could vote in 15 states from 1869 - 1918, and the first states to ratify the 19 Amendment.
The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. Throughout the product, after each page of notes is reviewed, students will answer short answer comprehension questions and multiple choice questions to review what was discussed on previous pages. At the end of the product, students are provided with a review that includes multiple choice questions and short answer questions.

Students will learn when the Industrial Revolution began and ended, what kinds of goods were manufactured, how large factories and technology produced goods in large quantities, how electricity, the production line, and the Bessemer steel press were utilized during the Industrial Revolution, the first textile mill and how it started the Industrial Revolution in 1793, who Samuel Slater was and how he made a profound impact during the Industrial Revolution, the major technology changes that happened during the Industrial Revolution such as coal, the steam engine, steel, iron, and petroleum, the move from people working at home and in small shops to large factories and why, steam power and how it became bigger and more powerful during this time, transportation that includes - steamboats, trains, and the Transcontinental Railroad and how they were useful during the Industrial Revolution, electricity - who invented it, and why it was important during the Industrial Revolution, the what the telegraph was, when the telephone was invented and by who, how it was beneficial and used during the Industrial Revolution, textile technology and how it grew during the Industrial Revolution - The Spinning Jenny and the Spinning Mule - what they were, how they differed from each other, and how they may production easier than spinning wool or cotton by hand, what the cotton gin was - who invented it, the sewing machine - who invented it, and what it was used for, cultural changes during the Industrial Revolution and what they were, working conditions and how they were dangerous for those that worked in factories, child labor - the age of children working, how children were treated, how much children earned, and how many hours children would work each day, why businesses relied on child labor, who breaker boys, newsies, and matchstick girls were, what they did, the dangers of their jobs, the changes that were made, and how they overcome those changes, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 - what it was, how it changed labor laws for children, and facts about the Act.

The Road to the Revolutionary War Adapted Notes and Review

This product was made for students to learn the following: Vocabulary words - parliament, independence, first Continental Congress, Minutemen, repeal, boycott, The Boston Tea Party, Declaration of Independence, imported, and commander.
In this product, students will learn about Independence Day/4th of July and why this holiday is celebrated in the United States of America. Students will also learn about the French and Indian War, who it was between, why it happened, who won the war, where France had colonies and where Great Britain had colonies, the Ohio River Valley, land east and west of the Mississippi River, the importance of beaver pelts and what they were used for, Great Britain implemented a tax that they wanted the Colonists to pay on certain goods, what a tax is, why the colonists were unhappy about this tax, the goods that were taxed, Parliament and the laws they wrote regarding tax, The Stamp Act, what it was, what it required Colonists to do, how the Colonists felt about this, and what the Colonists did to stop this tax are reviewed. Students will learn about other laws that the Parliament passed that had to do with purchasing goods such as tea and paper, what the colonists did about this, and how they felt about this tax, The Boston Massacre, what caused it, where it happened, why it happened, how the Colonists felt and why, what the American Revolution is, what happened after the Boston Massacre with Parliament, The Boston Tea Party, what the Boston Tea Party was, what happened during the Boston Tea Party, how Parliament responded to the actions of the Colonists, The Boston Port Act and the Quartering Act - laws that were imposed by the Parliament, and how the Colonists felt about these laws, the American Revolution - where it started, Minutemen and how they helped during the American Revolution, when the American Revolution began, the first shots of the American Revolution, where the Colonists and the British Soldiers were going and why before and during the American Revolution, Battle at Bunker Hill, what happened during the Battle at Bunker Hill, the Second Continental Congress meeting to discuss needing an army with supplies, the commander - George Washington was chosen to lead the Colonists and why he was chosen for this position, how the Declaration of Independence came about, who was involved with writing the Declaration of Independence, events that led to the Declaration of Independence when looking at a timeline and answering questions pertaining to the timeline are covered. Students will also review Thomas Paine's pamphlet - Common Sense and why he wrote it. A review that includes multiple choice and short answer questions cover a variety of topics covered in this product. This review is located at the back of the product.
The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. After reviewing and discussing the notes, they will answer comprehension questions to review what was discussed on previous pages, and a timeline that led to the Declaration of Independence is included, maps that show land east and west of the Mississippi River are included along with a map that shows where the first shots were fired during the American Revolution.

In this product, students will learn about The American Civil War. This product covers the following: single celled organisms, single celled organisms and what they are, brief review of the 5 levels of cellular organization and where they are found in the body, healthy and unhealthy bacteria - how it is produced and where it is found, bacteria and how it breaksdown remains of dead animals and plants, single celled organisms - eubacteria, archabacteria, unicellular protists, unicellular fungi, diatoms, amoeba, paramecium, and euglena - what they are, where they are found, what they do, how they move, etc. are reviewed, how organisms get food, diffusion and osmosis - what they are and how what they do, reproduction of a single cell is called binary fission, how parent cells copy information and divide, and budding of single cells, and the process that occurs during budding. In this product, students will learn how California was controlled by Mexico, who signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and what it meant once it was signed, what territory Mexico gave up, John Sutter - how he was the richest person during this time in California, what he hoped to accomplish, what was built on Sutter's 48,827 acres, why his dream was unsuccessful, and what caused this to happen, who found the first piece of gold in the American River, who James Marshall was and why he was hired by Sutter, Sam Brennan and what he did to become very rich, how much money Brennan earned, who the 49ers were and what they did to try to become rich, and traveling across the country in search of gold - Oregon-California Trail or an ocean voyage - the difficulties that were faced taking both of these routes. Students will also learn about where the Oregon-California Trail started and where it ended, the route that was taken if travelers on the East coast wanted to travel West and the continent they would travel around, what travelers had to do/and how long they had to wait for their turn to look for gold, how many people searched for gold in 1848 and 1849, how searching for gold was easy and then it became more challenging as more time went on, how and why the population of California increased and decreased during and after the California Gold Rush, how much money in gold was found in the American River during The California Gold Rush.

Understanding Emotions Activities

In this product, students will discuss what to ask for help for oneself and others. Students will identify and express a variety of feelings, common emotions that students feel, compare their emotions to a roller coaster ride and why that may happen, examples of emotional highs and emotional lows, when we feel emotional highs and lows, we may feel more pressure, and as students grow and develop – they need to deal with pressure. When students feel pressured, they can read the list of healthful ways to handle pressure, the list of feelings that it is okay to feel, what it is never okay to do, feelings and their definitions are included: embarrassment, depression, awkwardness, isolation, confusion, disappointment, hopefulness, optimism, happiness, and excitement. The importance of controlling emotions, suggestions for handling emotions are provided, mood swings, feeling pressure, and irritability are discussed. Students will be presented with different situations where they are required to identify the feeling, helpful ways to deal with the feeling, and harmful ways to deal with the feeling. Transition from elementary to middle school and adolescence are discussed and reviewed. Better techniques that can be used to form healthful relations are taught. Gossiping and annoying behaviors are reviewed and why they are frowned upon is included in this product. Students will also identify emotions, have students describe their own feelings and act out emotions. 10 emotion scenarios are provided for students to identify how students would feel if they were in that situation, students will track their emotions in a 7 day journal that is provided in this packet, coping skills are discussed and how they help us handle emotions in productive and positive ways, so our actions match our behavior, a list of poor coping skills is included along with healthy coping skills. Comprehension questions are asked throughout this product for students. They can be answered individually or as a group and can also be used as a group discussion. A teacher’s guide along with tips and activities is included with this product.
This product can be used for 5th - 8th grade, but can be used for younger or older students depending on maturity and academic level.

Vocabulary words that are emphasized in this packet include: Endocrine and Urinary Systems - hormones, pituitary gland, insulin - pancreas, diabetes, reproductive glands, puberty and what it is, testosterone, ovaries, estrogen, pubic area on males/females, body odor, body changes that take place during puberty, how to prevent body odor, emotions that one may experience during puberty, urinary system and how it removes wastes from the body, urine, and bladder.
These notes can also be used as adapted notes for students who need more support. This packet includes notes with short answer questions based on what was reviewed in the notes. Students will also answer questions using a key to review vocabulary covered in this lesson as well. There is a diagram students can draw and label of the urinary system at the end of the packet.

Act Graphic Novel Comprehension Questions

The graphic novel, Act by Kayla Miller is great for children ages 8 - 14, as they can relate with the characters. My students enjoyed this book because it is a book about friendship, being mature, supporting your friends, being a good sport, leader, etc., and solving problems with friends and in life. This book does not have chapters, so comprehension questions were separated by pages. Therefore, written comprehension skills are emphasized while reading. At the end of this product, there are a variety of short answer writing prompts to choose from.
The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and a few example sentences are presented in the packet. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet.

Fill in the blank questions are asked regarding the above vocabulary words. All fill in the blank questions are provided with an answer key.

The Man Who Named the Clouds Comprehension Questions

In this product, The Man Who Named the Clouds is read and reviewed. Students will review/learn facts and vocabulary about what a forecast and meteorologist are, what a biography is and if it is comparable to a fiction or nonfiction text, review vocabulary words and their pictures that are present in the text, different kinds of clouds, learn about the author and the illustrator, and students will write a weather journal. Students will answer comprehension questions using this product. They can complete these questions individually, in a small group, or with support. There are several pages of comprehension questions in this packet that differ from the questions asked in the teacher edition. Selection vocabulary words, their meanings, and an example of them used in a sentence is included in this product. Students will have the opportunity to make up their own sentences for each selection vocabulary word as well. The questions from the text are adapted in this packet to meet each of your student's needs. At the end of the packet, students will answer comprehension questions about the author and illustrator.
