Independent Reading Accountability Rubric for self assessment
By The Red-Haired Reader
Are you in need of a way to encourage your students to come to class prepared and ready to read independently? Do you want to reward those who consistently do their best, and motivate those who could be doing better? Do you like to use self-assessment tools in class to hold your students accountable? Check out my rubric!
This is an independent reading preparedness and preparation rubric I use to make sure students come to class prepared to read, and stay focused and respectful to their peers while reading in class. It is a 4 point rubric, and focuses on preparedness and performance. Students use it to self-assess their own reading habits, and set a goal to work towards at the bottom. Then I go in and score them with a different color pen on the rubric, so they can see where they believe they are, and where I believe they are on the rubric.

Vocabulary One-Pager for Independent Reading Workshop!
By The Red-Haired Reader
As students read their independent reading/ reading workshop book over the course of the week, they will select 5 words or phrases that the author used that stood out to them, or had a particularly strong impact. They will put the 5 words, definitions, and an analysis of how the author used them onto one piece of blank paper. The end result will be one page of visually appealing information. I used this for independent reading, but you could use it for a specific novel or even literature circles. The file contains directions for you to copy or post, Success Criteria, and a scoring rubric.
This digital assignment is PERFECT for use during Distance Learning. Students can view the requirements and the rubric in this PDF, then create and submit their final product through Google Classroom or whatever way you use for your students!

Independent Reading Found Poem and reflection SUMMARIZE
By The Red-Haired Reader
This file contains directions on how to write a found poem, and requires students to write one for a book they are reading independently. The students will choose a passage in their novel that they'd like to summarize using a found poem, then they identify words and phrases from the text that they'll incorporate. It includes the directions, a writer's checklist, a reflection for the students to complete after their poem, and a question at the end that requires them to switch poems with a partner where they have to summarize the section of text their partner wrote about. If they can, their partner's poem was successful in summarizing the text! If not, their partner should go back and revise.
