I love doing this project in October leading up to Halloween because this artwork produces a great seasonal multicultural display that is tied to Día de los Muertos (and not Halloween). Hispanic Heritage Month ends a few weeks before Day of the Dead and this project integrates them perfectly!

This lesson has it all - high student engagement, multicultural, cross-curricular, and it produces fantastic student artwork for display.

This holiday has become more popular in the United States. Teach your students about this important day in Hispanic culture while giving students a chance to create a unique calavera. This resource includes a fact sheet about Day of the Dead to help explain it to students (& parents or administrators!) who may not fully understand the significance of the Day of the Dead in Hispanic culture.
