Looking for fun ideas to get your students speaking French at the end of the year or at la rentrée? These are my favorite ice breakers that I like to use specifically for that reason! Use these speaking activities, games and listening comprehension activities all year long and get your students motivated while having loads of fun. You're going to love hearing your students speaking French together.
Two of the resources included are specific to back to school time while the others can be used year round. You can use them at all levels in the classroom as well as with your school's French club when you're looking for a fun activity to get them speaking French or for long bus rides on school sponsored trips. These are wonderful activities either for French immersion or French as a second language programs.
I recommend printing, laminating, cutting out, punching holes and attaching the cards together with a ring for NO PREP activities for years to come, and for the 100 French speaking activity worksheets I've found that it is best to print them all out and keep them in a binder for easy access when you need to make photocopies.
Here's what's included in this money saving bundle. Just click on the links to see more in depth product descriptions:
Ceci ou Cela - French Game of 2 Extremes Ice-breaker Activity
- Keep your middle school and high school French students active by playing the "Two Extremes" game. 100 French worksheets for group speaking activities - 100 vocabulary themes
By Love Learning Languages - French Resources
Use these French vocabulary building activities with groups of students who need to learn and practice specific vocabulary and what to say in everyday situations in French. 100 different situations in which it is useful to have specific vocabulary are included.
You can use these one page worksheets all year long with students at every level. They make for an easy, no prep lesson when you need to have a sub and you still want your students to speak French together.
I've also used this type of activity a lot with my French club. If you want your students to practice writing and would prefer to opt for a silent activity, why not use them in a fun game of SCOOT? With 100 worksheets you'll have more than enough to put different vocabulary themes on each desk. Instructions are included.
Each of the 100 worksheets is only in French so they are perfect for both immersion and core French programs. The vocabulary themes are suitable for any age, from primary immersion through high school with traditional French as a second language kids. Each worksheet includes an image to illustrate the theme.
There are several ways I like to use these worksheets which are fantastic bell ringers and ice breakers. I love to have them on hand at back to school and toward the end of the year to use as review. All 100 worksheets are also included in my French Ice-Breaker Bundle for Back to School.
SCOOT: Tape a different version of the worksheets to each desk or seat in your classroom. Choose vocabulary themes that your students should be familiar with. Students move around the classroom from seat to seat and will rotate through all of the worksheets. All students start at their own seat and take note of the worksheet they begin with. Students write something they would say in the chosen vocabulary theme and record their name next to it. They can’t repeat what another student has already written! When the teacher says BOUGEZ after a chosen amount of time (15 - 30 seconds or so will keep the game fast paced) students move to the next seat and start all over again with a different theme. Play the game until students make it to their original seat. It may be helpful to number the desks so that students will know which seat to move to next. You can always collect the sheets after the game to do a quick assessment if you wish. I’ve included an additional response sheet as the one page worksheet only has space for ten responses. (see ADDITIONAL RESPONSE SHEET included in the download).
SMALL GROUPS: Students work with partners or small groups to come up with short sentences using target vocabulary. Using the charts provided, students write down what they would say to the person indicated (doctor, postman, etc) and they write the name of the person who said it. Each person in the group should say at least one thing.
Qu’est-ce que tu dirais? What would you say? Short sentence
Qui l’a dit? Who said it? Name of student
AS A CLASS: Use worksheets as a whole classroom activity and have students circulate asking as many different people as possible to contribute things one says (des trucs qu’on dit) to different people and in different situations. Be sure to remind students to indicate the person who gave the response on his or her paper and encourage them not to ask the same student for more than one response.
With 100 different worksheets and each with a different theme, you can pick out one to use in practically any situation and they make for a fun way to review vocabulary. I always encourage my students to write down the new vocabulary they learn in categories.
When the worksheet is full you can call on individual students randomly and have them read the responses they liked the best stating who said them.
There is a one page worksheet for each of the vocabulary themes. I recommend printing them all out and putting them in a folder so that you have easy access when it’s time to make photocopies. Answer keys are not included as they are not applicable to this type of activity.

Included with this resource:
How the game works:

Other players can react in a variety of ways:
If you say that you have done something (and you're not a beginner) you have to tell the story about when you did what is on the card in French.
What some teachers are saying about this French speaking activity:
Used this with my French III classes today as a warm-up to review negation. Students were completely engaged and really enjoyed the activity. My supervisor walked in for an observation just after we started the activity, and when she left the room, one student remarked "You did good, Madame!" It was really them doing all the work, but he was right. She loved the activity, too. Merci!
I just love this activity because it gives students a chance to speak without a whole lot of pressure. I always do this with 2 circles of students, the interior circle facing the exterior circle. They enjoy getting up out of their seats for awhile, and of course, the activities listed are interesting.
I can't wait to use these in class today. These last few days before break are always so rough. These looks like something that will keep the students busy.
My senior high students LOVED this. Great to find French speaking activities that appeal to them and are fun.

➤ Print, laminate, cut out, punch holes and attach on a ring for small groups to ask and answer questions. Answer key is provided for small group work or centers.
➤ Use as a warm-up speaking activity with a conversation partner. As students enter the classroom have them choose 2-3 cards from a box.

France Trivia Game - French Game Activity
By Love Learning Languages - French Resources
This 90 question trivia game is loads of fun for an end of the year or semester game, a back to school activity, a sub plan or use trivia for bell ringer and icebreaker activities.
Though his product was created for French classes, it will work for any high school class since the questions are based on general knowledge and not only French related information. I’ve included several different versions (see full details below) including French only and French and English as well as powerpoint versions which will allow you to project the game and play as a class.
This trivia game is great fun as a French club activity!
You may also enjoy my France Trivia Quiz Activity - French Culture Game
This resource includes:
90 trivia cards - French only with answers
90 trivia cards - French only without answers
90 trivia cards - French and English with answers
90 trivia cards - French and English without answers
Each trivia question is assigned a point value (the easiest are worth 1 point and the most difficult are worth 9 points).
There are a number of ways you can play this game. Here are some of the ways I like to use this game:
1. Have students play in small groups of at least 3. One student calls the questions and verifies the answers. Students keep track of their score and in the end the one with the most points wins.
2. Project the PDF version of the game and have students write their answers and points scored on a numbered sheet of paper. You could easily allow students to work in small groups so that they can help each other out. In the end, the group with the most points wins.
3. Classic Jeopardy: Draw the game board which is composed of boxes with points in them on the classroom's whiteboard or project it from a computer. Group students into teams. The game starts when the teacher chooses the first easy box that teams need to answer. Once the first box has been answered, the team that answered correctly can choose the next question. They can choose the hardest questions if they want additional points or they can opt for easier ones for lower amounts of points. For the final round, also known as DOUBLE JEOPARDY the points double. The game ends when all the questions on the board game have been answered and the team with the highest score wins.

French Speaking and Guessing Game
By Love Learning Languages - French Resources
Catch Phrase is a French game to get your students speaking and having fun in French while learning tons of new vocabulary words. This game doesn't follow any particular theme, so the 80 playing cards display 80 unrelated words - a fantastic way to round out your students' speaking skills! This game is only in French and is suitable for both core and immersion curriculums.

This game is a lot like the TABOO game (click here for themed French TABOO games), but there are no taboo words. Each game card shows the word in question in French along with an image to illustrate it.
This resource includes:
- How to play
- 80 playing cards in color
- 80 playing cards in black and white
- File showing one card per page to project for all class activity
The game is played in two teams. The goal for each player is to get their team to say the word or word phrase displayed on the game card. One member of a team starts a timer for 5 minutes and tries to get his or her team to guess the displayed word or phrase.
A clue-giver can make any physical gesture and give almost any verbal clue, but may not say a word that rhymes with any of the words, give the first letter of a word, say the number of syllables, or say part of any word in the clue.
When the team guesses correctly, the other team takes the stack of cards and takes its turn. Play continues until the timer runs out. The team not holding the stack of cards when time runs out scores a point. They also have one chance to guess the word or phrase, with team members allowed to confer; a correct answer earns a bonus point. The first team to score 7 points wins. Tip from user Madeleine Hoyer : print and glue to card stock and laminate, you can then use it as a speaking center/activity.
