The translations are from English to French and they involve using the present and past conditional as well as other grammar points and verb tenses that students at this level should be comfortable with. A video tutorial on how to teach the past conditional is included.

In this lesson I pay special attention to how to say "would have been", "could have been" and "should have been" in French.

French Present Conditional Lesson - Should, Could, Would

This resource includes the following:

➯ A set of 25 numbered cards with sentences written in English that students will then translate to French. A numbered answer key is also included so that students can work on their own. It is expected that students also know the imperfect tense and some simple pronouns that are normally taught way before the conditional.

➯ A one page printable reference guide that folds into a booklet that students can use for easy reference. The booklet includes all of the essential information needed for saying should, could, and would.

➯ A one page study guide on forming the present conditional that highlights how to say should, could, and would. The study guide also includes the imperfect endings, a chart of the most common irregular stems in the conditional, and twelve examples in French and English

French conditional - Bataille Navale - French present conditional battleship game Everyone loves a good game of BATTLESHIP, and the French classroom is a better place than any! You can use this classic game format to have your students practice the present conditional tense. This game is perfect for both core and immersion curriculums and everything written on the games is in French. *There is not an answer key included with this resource due to the number of responses possible. This resource includes 40 different verbs including all of the common ones with irregular stems and a few with spelling changes as well as a good mix of regular verbs. 5 different versions of the game are included. Check out my entire collection of BATAILLE NAVALE games.
Just print out one page of the version of this game that you want to use per student. Students place boats (which are squares on the game sheets that they will have darkened with a pencil) on the game board. Students play against each other to try to find and eventually sink their opponent’s boats. Subject pronouns are written in the vertical column and infinitives are written in the boxes at the top. To choose a square, the player must say the subject and correct verb form in the imperfect tense. Another idea is to have students make simple sentences using the subject pronoun and verb of choice. All of the vocabulary they’ll need is written right on the game sheet and it is all in French. Each game sheet includes two battleship grids and a line separating the two. Students can fold the paper on the line if they want to. One of the grids is for a player to place his boats and the other is to mark and keep track of his opponent. This resource includes 5 versions of the game with both black and white and color copies and instructions on how to play.

French Past Conditional Lesson - Should have, Could have, Would have

This resource includes the following:

➯ A set of 25 numbered cards with sentences written in English that students will then translate to French. A numbered answer key is also included so that students can work on their own. It is expected that students also know some other past tenses and some simple pronouns that are normally taught way before the past conditional.

➯ A one page printable reference guide that folds into a booklet that students can use for easy reference. The booklet includes all of the essential information needed for saying should have, could have, and would have.

➯ A two page study guide on forming the present conditional that highlights how to say should have, could have, and would have. If you do double-sided printing you can still just pass out one sheet of paper. The study guide is jam packed with everything you need to know about the past conditional.

These 30 questions are just right for students who need to practice the CONDITIONAL TENSE, and they are a perfect no prep speaking activity for busy teachers. Each EST-CE QUE question uses the TU form with verbs in the conditional tense. In addition to regular and irregular -ER, -IR and -RE verbs I've also included many irregular verbs. You could easily have students respond to the questions using 2nd conditional si clauses.

In order to avoid OUI and NON answers, each question also includes an interrogative word which is great practice in helping to remember what they mean and where they're placed in the sentence.

Since all of the questions are asked in the TU form, all of the answers will be in the first person singular. This is so that students can really focus and get used to using these verbs when talking about themselves and when talking to a friend.

Just cut out the 30 cards, punch holes in the spaces provided and attach the stack of cards with a key ring. It would be a great idea to print on card stock and laminate the cards before punching holes and attaching them. Super easy and no prep for years to come. Both black and white and color versions are included as well as a 2 page print out of the questions if you should decide to use them as a quiz or homework assignment.

Repetition is key in learning a language, and that's why I've created many different versions of these speaking cards. All of the cards ask the same basic questions, but each time in a different tense. My students really appreciate the familiarity of the cards even when learning a new tense.
