This learning resource focuses on the journey of crude oil distillates from their extraction in the Middle East to their final applications in various industries such as Polyester, Copper, Fertilizer, and Microchips. Students will engage in a group task to select one specific industry and trace the supply chain through a series of steps, including extraction, transportation through the Strait of Hormuz, refining, and final manufacturing. Essential parts of the process are emphasized through tasks like creating a flowchart and analyzing vulnerabilities of the supply chain, especially concerning potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Students will also formulate claims about the economic or social impacts of supply shortages and propose strategic methods for mitigating supply chain risks.
