STUDENT GUIDELINES FOR USING THIS RESOURCE

Completed with a partner, students will analyze how writers use metaphors in poetry by looking at examples. The PDF provides multiple examples to guide students. They will then read and analyze a mentor poem and utilize the same structure to write their poem. They will love creating their poems and watching their ideas come to life! This well-organized activity allows students to effortlessly become poets, while thinking about concise and precise word choice, counting syllables to create rhythm, getting exposure to high-quality examples, and learning something new! This is a great way to get your students excited about studying a historical or current figure. Students use research and inference skills to create a resume for a historical or current figure. The example given is Mao Zedong's Resume'. Students will create an objective as to what job the character is applying. The character's education, work experience, etc. will be included. This will enhance the student's comprehension of who the character is and/or was.

2 ways to play:

* a sit-down activity - print out, cut up

Children draw an adjective from a receptacle and place it on the right plate.

* a kinetic activity (great for lively classes) -print out two sets, cut up, laminate

• divide students into two teams
• place the plates at one end of the classroom and the receptacles with adjectives at the opposite end of the classroom
• children pick an adjective and run and place it on the correct plate and run back
• they high-five the next team member in line and only then can the next player pick an adjective and run to the plates
• the competition ends when all the adjectives have been placed
• the team which scores the most points (= placed the most adjectives right) wins

5. Board Game

You need counters and dices. To be played in pairs or small groups. If you teach a larger group, print out a few of them.

3 ways to play:

* pupils say the comparative and superlative of the adjective

* pupils form a comparative / superlative and add a suitable noun

* pupils form a sentence

If they make a mistake or don't know, they lose their turn and have to return back to the square they previously stood on.

6. Tic Tac Toe

To be played in pairs. In order to write their Xs and Os, pupils have to write the

comparative and superlative on the line. If they don't know, they have to choose a different square. If they make a mistake, they lose their turn.

First, review the three terms using the Mini-Lesson slide with examples.

Then, after reading each sentence on the board, move to the side of the room labeled “THERE,” “THEIR,” or “THEY'RE” depending on which word you think should fill the blank. There's an additional fun emoji slide for students who are unsure of the answer!

Figurative Language Short Passage Sets are a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! These figurative language passage sets are rigorous, use higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing.
