ESL Speaking and Listening Activity Taboo Game Classic #2 - Oral Communication

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Looking for an engaging way to get your ESL students to build their communication skills and vocabulary? Taboo is a fun speaking and listening game where one student has to guess a word based on clues given by other students. The catch is that they cannot mention anything that is included in a list of taboo words.

This game is Set 2 in my ESL Classic Taboo Bundle Sets 1 - 2 - 3.

Click here to see more of my English resources.

You can easily modify this game to play it with all levels!  You are going to love hearing your students speaking in English to each other about all kinds of vocabulary words in this classic version that has no particular theme.

Object of the game:

One player tries to get his teammate to guess the word at the top of a card. The player must give clues, but he can't use any of the Taboo words in his description. The taboo words are written beneath the underlined word at the top of the card.

Teams score points for each word successfully guessed. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Beginner students should be allowed to use the TABOO words printed on the cards. This will encourage them to use new vocabulary and will help them in forming sentences to use as clues.

This ESL Taboo vocabulary and speaking game includes the following:

  • How to play ESL Taboo (beginner and advanced levels)
  • 50 printable taboo cards - 4 per page

What teachers are saying about my ESL Taboo Speaking games:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "The kids had so much fun with this game &  it really opened the door to all kinds of new vocab!" - Casey O.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I tutor some intermediate level English learners in middle school and high school and they really enjoyed this game! We played it a few different ways as suggested in the directions. Thanks!" - Ms. Rosemary

✮ ESL vacation conversation starters and speaking prompts ✮

Want your ESL students to use their vacation vocabulary? This NO PREP activity is a fun way to encourage your intermediate to advanced students to speak more. Just print and cut out the cards or you may choose to project them for a whole class activity or for when you don't want to print (or don't have time).

You can use these cards after learning specific vocabulary for vacations or as a fun interactive activity on a day when you want to just focus on speaking and reviewing vocabulary in a different way.

There are 30 questions in all. All of the questions are asked in the YOU form and require the answering student to respond using I. Most of the questions begin with an interrogative word encouraging more than YES and NO responses. Some questions are in the near future while others are in the past tense.

This resource is included in my ESL - ELL speaking, listening, writing activities and games - Growing bundle.

Topics used in these cards:

* Means of transportation

* Geographical locations

* Some airport vocabulary

* Travel destinations (beach, mountain, etc.)

* Preferences

Included:

30 color speaking prompt cards

30 black and white speaking prompt cards

9 ways to use these cards

Scoot activity instructions

Scoot answer recording sheet

All cards are visually stimulating and feature a circle to punch out in the upper left corner so that you can print, laminate, cut out, punch holes and hook the cards together with a keyring. Using these cards this way makes it easy to pull them out year after year to use as NO PREP speaking activities.
