Battleship - Present Perfect

Fun game to practice present perfect. This is my go-to game when I need to drill some grammar into my students. It's by far the most efficient grammar game. I love it because it's no prep, just PRINT AND GO. And my students love it because it doesn't feel like learning when, in fact, they do a TON of learning. We can easily spend the whole lesson playing battleship and they still want to play even after the bell rings.

It's also a great activity for substitute lessons or when I'm in a time press and don't have much time to prepare for a lesson.

How to play:

  • It can be played in pairs or in small teams
  • Hide your ships in the left field. They mustn't touch.
  • Try to hit the enemy ships in the right field.
  • If your enemy hits your ship, indicate that in the left field. If you hit your enemy's ship, mark it down in the right field. If you miss, mark it down as well. If you hit your enemy's ship, have another go.
  • To win, sink all of your enemy's ships before he sinks yours.

Kaboom! Game

  • print out and cut up the numbered sentence cards and Kaboom! cards, laminate (optional)
  • put them in a receptacle of your choice
  • decide on how long you want to spend on this activity and set a timer
  • pupils take turns pulling out a card and finishing or making a sentence using cues and picture prompts
  • if they say it right, they get to keep the card
  • if they get it wrong, they put it back
  • the next pupil takes a turn
  • if they pull out a Kaboom! card, they put all their cards back, feel free to use as many (or as few) Kaboom! card as you wish
  • pupil with the most cards at the end wins

Scoot Game

  • use the numbered sentence cards, each student gets a recording sheet
  • place one card on each student's desk. If you have fewer students than cards, feel free to not use the whole deck.
  • plan a route, make sure your students understand which way they are supposed to move
  • start the game by having each pupil write the answer to their card on their answer sheet
  • when students are finished, call out "SCOOT" and they move to their neighbour's desk where they write the answer to the card on that desk
  • call out "SCOOT" again, students move again, continue until students have answered all the cards
  • answer sheets can be corrected with the whole group, in pairs or collected for a later correction

Collaborative Crossword

  • students work in pairs, each pair gets 1 crossword sheet cut in half
  • to work out the crossword, students need to tell each other clues - definitions of vocabulary from their part of the crossword
  • once the crossword are finished, students need to work out what the secret message is

This product focuses on the use of irregular verbs in past simple, it contains affirmative sentences.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • task cards can be used as a whole class activity or in groups, depending on the size of your class
  • if used as a group activity, print out as many sets as the number of groups
  1. print out (see printing instructions) and cut up the task card, print out the pages with numbers
  2. put the task cards (1 set) in a receptacle of your choice
  3. pupils take turns pulling out a card and making sentences - they fill the gaps with the right form of the verbs in brackets (all missing verbs are IRREGULAR VERBS in PAST SIMPLE)
  4. if they say it right, they get to keep the card
  5. if they get it wrong, they put it back
  6. the next pupil takes a turn; repeat until all task cards are handed out
  7. (if done as a group activity, hand out the rest of the sets at this point)
  8. once all the task cards are handed out, students put them in the correct order to create a story about the origins of Thanksgiving
  9. they place the task cards in the right place on the pages with numbers
  10. to check if they got it right, students flip the cards - the resultant picture should be that of a turkey
  11. students flip the task cards back and read out the story in the correct order
