What’s in this pack?

This pack contains a set of 8 questions on the subject of Algebra free of charge to give you a sample of our task cards. The questions in this pack are unique to our main task card bundle, which can be purchased here.

The questions include simple real life situations, nth term questions and sequences, working with simple algebraic equations, and geometry related questions. The cards introduce the idea that algebra has a function in the real world, providing a strong base for the continued learning of Algebra.

Each question is differentiated in 4 ways across 4 cards. The easiest are the Red Questions and then the Yellow. The Green cards offer a little more challenge by asking additional questions, and finally the Challenge cards are designed to push the most able.

Level Ups are a fun way for your students to practice or review defining functions and comparing functions. Aligned to the common core standards, this Level Ups activity includes 5 differentiated tasks that increase in rigor. Students start at level zero and work their way up to level 4, giving them accurate feedback on what they have mastered, and what they still need to work on. This lesson works as a great way to review what is and is not a function, or as preparation for an upcoming assessment.

Includes use of the distributive property, combining like terms, and integers.

• 1 page instructions: how to solve equations with variables on both sides (with examples)

SCOOT:

Put a question card on each desk.

Give each student an answer sheet and a pencil.

Have each student answer the question card on their desk and record their answer on their answer sheet. Make sure to remind them to answer the correct number.

Give students x (I gave my students 2 minutes, but it’s up to you) minutes to answer each question. Then say “SCOOT”.

When you say “scoot”, students will quickly stand up, leave their card at their desk and move to the next desk with the next number. They will then start working immediately on the next question.

When all students are finished, check the answers as a group.

Other ideas for using task cards in the classroom:

EXIT SLIP:

Have a student choose a card and let him solve the equation before leaving class.

Copy onto colored card stock. Laminate them and use them year after year.

Ever needed a review activity on the properties of exponents that was fun and engaging for your students? Team Target Review is a cooperative and competitive activity designed to get students thinking, talking, and working together.

Teams of 2-4 students work together to complete increasing levels of difficulty on the properties of exponents. As students progress, you can quickly assess mastery and give intervention help on the spot.

This activity works great as an engaging review session before an assessment, a quick(ish) activity on one of those pesky minimum days where you have limited time, or as part of a block period when you want to break up the direct instruction.
