If you are looking for a way to teach your students about the history and significance of the civil rights movement in the United States, get this bundle of Civil Rights Movement Reading Comprehension passages. This will help to engage the students with high-quality texts and meaningful questions that will deepen their understanding and spark their curiosity, especially during Black History Month.

The passages are perfect for grades 4, 5, and 6, but can also be used for higher or lower grades depending on the students’ reading level and background knowledge.

• Martin Luther King Jr. Day: These are 3 pages about the life and legacy of the most influential leader of the civil rights movement, and how his birthday became a national holiday that celebrates his vision of peace and justice.
• Rosa Parks and The Montgomery Bus Boycott: Learn about the courageous act of defiance by Rosa Parks that sparked a year-long boycott of the segregated bus system in Montgomery, Alabama, and that inspired a nationwide movement for racial equality.
• The March on Washington: The passage is about the historic demonstration that brought more than 200,000 people to the nation’s capital to demand civil and economic rights for African Americans, and that featured the famous “I Have a Dream” speech by Martin Luther King Jr.
• Brown v. Board of Education: Help the students learn about the landmark Supreme Court case that declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, and that paved the way for the integration of education in America.

Each passage is followed by a set of questions that test the students’ comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. In addition, each passage comes with an answer key that provides detailed explanations for each question.
