•Great addition to your Unit on Developing Empathy.

How to use this empathy sorting activity?

Option A: For younger students or students not yet reading, this sorting activity can be used to stimulate small group discussions or whole group discussions. Does the person in the scenario show empathy? Or ”Does not show empathy?”

Use the discussion questions to help stimulate discussions around each scenario.

When looking at the scenarios that do not show empathy, add the 3rd Card: “What can you say or do to show more empathy?”

This will extend your students’ thinking and encourage them to delve deeper into the discussion around empathy.

Option B: For students already reading, these could be a classroom center activity or a writing prompt.

Resource # 3: Empathy Task Cards

These Empathy Task cards will be a great addition to your Unit on Developing Empathy and will help your preschool, pre-k or kindergarten students identify how others might be feeling and begin to think about how they can respond with empathy to others.

What’s included in this Empathy Task Cards resource?

44 Task Cards in color and black & white versions.

(22 at school & 22 at home)

2 editable pages to create your own scenarios.

• 18 Feelings Character Cards

• Task Card Recording Sheet

When to use these Empathy Task Cards?

•These task cards work well with an individual,  a small group or with your whole class.

•Great addition to your Unit on Developing Empathy.

How to use these Empathy Task Cards ?

Option 1: Use these task cards as a catalyst for discussion with a small group, an individual or during your group time.

You may choose to add the Feeling Character Cards as a way for your students to respond to the scenarios. You read the scenario and your student holds up the feeling card they think best represents the situation.

Feelings included are:

Frustrated. Nervous. Angry. Upset. Annoyed. Worried. Sick. Scared. Cold. Thirsty. Hungry. Tired. Excited. Surprised. Proud. Confident. Unsure. Embarrassed.

Option 2: For students already reading and/or writing, these task cards are great as a ‘think-pair-share’ exercise, or students can write their responses using the recording sheet provided.

Option 3: Role play the different scenarios and invite students to discuss the situations and how each person might be feeling. Use the questions prompts to help guide discussions.
