Supply/Demand Activity with Land Use Extension--5th grade Studies Weekly Week 14

By Colleen Burdette

Get students up and moving:

This activity gets students up to get or wait for crayons. All students are coloring a picture based on directions using a limited amount of crayons. The teacher brokers the use of crayons. Students will begin to understand the concept of supply and demand as they find the crayons they need are not available for their use and require them to wait. My students stuggledthe most with not sharing crayons with other students. Students can follow up with reflection questions that lead to a deeper level of knowledge.

An option extension explores the misunderstanding of land use that caused great difficulty between the Indigenous People and British Colonists. This extension demonstrates the Indigenous belief that the land couldn't be owned, just used and the British belief that land was to be owned, not just used. This optional part of the activity leads to interesting discussion. Students can follow up withe reflection questions that lead to a deeper level of knowledge.

These activities align with Indiana Social Studies standards 5.E.1, 5.E.5.

What's included:

  • Teacher directions for both activities.
  • Labelled color sheet.
  • Reflection questions for each activity.

How is this product useful:

Coupon Binder -Teach your students or children the power of saving money

By Regina Frazier

Save lots of money while shopping using coupons. This colorful, cheerful binder organizes your coupons and makes it easier for you to find just the right coupon you are looking for while out shopping. Teach your students or children in your household the value of saving money by saving coupons. Create your own coupon binder by using baseball card holders that you can find at many dollar stores or office supply stores. You can either use a two inch or three inch binder to set it up and place all your dividers in. There are two coupon sorting sheets available. Rather than flipping through the pages in your binder to insert coupons which can take a lot of time, you can use the coupon sorting mats. Once the coupons are all sorted, you can then place them in your binder. Children of all ages can help with sorting the coupons. Many kids can also help out with gathering coupons and cutting them out. Have your students write about ways they can help their family save money. There are a couple of writing prompts that you could use to have your students share ways that they can help their families save money. This does not necessarily mean just using coupons. It could mean saving money by turning off the lights when not in use, not taking long showers, or turning in cans for redemption. Some kids might write about a job they do such as a paper route, mowing the grass or shoveling snow. Some students might choose to discuss buying items on sale at the store and not demanding expensive name brand items."Older students can work on the total amount of savings from using coupons. They can also work on figuring out percentages to show how much money is saved during each shopping trip and totals for each month. CHINA GEOGRAPHY: ONE CHILD, TWO CHILD, THREE CHILD OR MORE, POPULATION POLICIES

By Geography & Math Made Easy

Your students will love this lesson, from 6th grade to 12th grade. The PowerPoint is included in the Zip File.

In 1980, China enforced the One-Child Policy Act to due to overpopulation issues as a result of Mao Zedong's policies, as he competed with Russia for power. Once he dies in 1979, China had to look at the population issues as there was a shortage of housing and resources— and they were continuing to multiply. Something had to be done, so the government enforce Martial Law and only allowed families to have one child.

(To examine in depth the One-Child Policy Act of 1979 under Mao Zedong's leadership, click here.)

However, now the One-Child Policy has created a downward shift in population, and as the older generation dies, the population is declining at significant rates. In 2016, to encourage population growth, China's government put in to play the Two-Child Policy pleading with its citizens, "Please have a second child". When that wasn't working, in 2021, they pass a Three-Child Policy.

This lesson examines and compares China's Child Policy Acts throughout the years and their effectiveness, also giving students the opportunity to provide their opinion of various scenarios.

  • Understand the guidelines of the One-Child Policy Act, Two-Child Policy
    Act, and Three-Child Policy Act
  • Examine the cause and effect of China's child policy acts
  • Determine the effectiveness of each of China's child policy acts
  • Understand Population Density

  • KWL Reading Activity & Share (Included)
  • Painters Tape
  • Laminated Agree and Disagree Sign (Tape to the wall)
  • PowerPoint: Examining China’s Child Policies (Included in zip file)

PBL | PROJECT | ENQUÊTE/INQUIRY | EARTH SUSTAINABILITY/AVENIR DURABLE (FRENCH)

By French Made Fun!

Ignite middle schoolers' curiosity with our inquiry-based project on imports, exports, energy, and electricity. Cross-curricular and transdisciplinary, it fosters critical thinking through reading, writing, and research. Transform learning with a dynamic, comprehensive experience!

Take a look at the preview to see first-hand what you can expect in this mega-resource that was a labour of love for me!

This 146-page unit will provide you with content, activities, projects, rubrics, simulations and discussion prompts necessary to engage your students for upwards of 2 months in a series of learnings, research and projects which will ultimately have them creating solutions for real world problems relating to food waste, energy sources, importing and exporting and the choices we make relative to our consumption.

Following a cross-curricular approach, I include step-by-step details, thorough lesson plans that will have you and your students deeply exploring some big concepts, connecting subjects, digging deeper, and thinking critically about sustainability and the future of our planet.

Within this mega-resource, you'll find two parts:

  • A 57-page teaching guide including a brief overview of the unit, the outcomes you'll be covering, detailed and thorough lesson plans for each day, all assignments, graphic organizers, stations, debates, simulations, answer keys, and rubrics. Many additional projects are recommended and explained for each of the major sections in addition to the lesson plans I provide. It includes printables for all games and activities, research, projects, and success criteria.

  • I also guide you on using the second part to this resource:

  • A 91-slide teaching document which includes all content, vocabulary, games and concepts relating to:

  • Food waste in Canada and the effects on the economy and the environment:

  • Perishability of food items.

  • A close look at expiries and "best before" dates.

  • A quick game on perishability.

  • Recommended film and videos.

  • Importing and exporting in Canada and its impacts on the economy and the environment:

  • Connection between food waste and imports.

  • The importance of shopping locally.

  • A trivia game on natural resources which are either imported or exported and a breakdown of the destinations of each.

  • A segway into imported and exported energy sources - and why we export some of our energies out-of-country and overseas.

  • Energy sources in Canada and its impacts on the economy and the environment:

  • Why do Canadians export their energy?

  • The good, the bad, and the ugly of energy consumption and our abuse with overconsumption.

  • The laws and transformations of energy.

  • An in-depth look at the different forms of energy, where the energy comes from and how they're used.

  • An in-depth look into renewable energy sources.

  • An in-depth look into our planet's atmospheric layers, our ozone layer, and the different characteristics of each.

  • A look into protests and laws that protect our environment - and a call to action.

Interested in testing out an inquiry- and project-based approach, but don't know where to start? Here are some suggestions for you!

  • Dragon's Den - Dans l'oeil du dragon!

For goodness sakes, don't forget to have fun!
