Looking to the Past: Verb Tense Activity - Instagram Themed

By A Teachers Sidekick

These are fake Instagram posts that have pictures of activities. One post shows the activity happening in the present and the other post shows the activity either finished or happening in the past. The teacher will need to cut out the Instagram posts and the text boxes. Then the students will need to place the descriptions (inside the text boxes) with the correct Instagram post. The majority of the practice with this activity is focused on past tense, but there is also present and future tense.

**An extension for the activity is to have the students underline and identify the verb that shows the tense of the sentence.**

This can be used for multiple grade levels and would be a great support activity for upper elementary and middle school students who need practice with verb tenses (especially past tense).

I hope you enjoy it. Please rate and review.

Identify the Verb in a Sentence

By Jessica Policelli

Objective:
Help students identify the verb in a sentence, enhancing their understanding of sentence structure and improving their reading and writing skills.

What is a Verb?
A verb is a word that expresses an action, occurrence, or state of being. It is a crucial part of a sentence, as it often tells what the subject is doing.

Types of Verbs:

  1. Action Verbs: Describe physical or mental actions (e.g., run, think, play).
  2. Linking Verbs: Connect the subject to additional information (e.g., is, are, seem).
  3. Helping Verbs: Assist main verbs to express tense, mood, or voice (e.g., have, will, can).

How to Identify the Verb:

  1. Ask Questions:
  • Who is doing something? (Subject)
  • What are they doing? (Action/Linking Verb)
  1. Look for Action Words:
  • Words that show what the subject is doing are usually verbs.
  1. Identify Linking Verbs:
  • If the sentence describes a state of being or connects the subject to more information, find the linking verb.
  1. Check for Helping Verbs:
  • Look for auxiliary verbs that accompany a main verb.

Practice Activity:

  1. Read the following sentences:
  • The cat jumps over the fence.
  • She is a great artist.
  • They will be attending the concert.
  1. Identify the verbs and classify them as action, linking, or helping.

Tips for Success:

  • Remember that a sentence can have more than one verb.
  • Use the context of the sentence to determine the correct verb if it’s not immediately clear.
  • Practice with varied sentence structures to become more comfortable identifying verbs.

Conclusion:
Recognizing verbs is essential for mastering language skills. Encourage students to practice regularly and apply their knowledge in writing and reading exercises.

Writing or Grammar Editing Marks

By Fortunate in Fifth Grade

Do you print out your student's writing and have them peer edit? Do you have students' correct sentences when teaching grammar? Then these are perfect for you. These are quick, easy editing marks students can use to correct writing or assist with grammar lessons. I print them out, number the back of them and laminate them.

I hand them out at the beginning of the year to keep in their writing binder. When we do Daily Language they use a red pen to edit the sentences and then rewrite the sentences correctly. When we peer edit I print their writing and they meet with a partner and peer edit each other's work using these correction marks.

This resource includes

  • 6 different colors, 2 to a page editing mark cheat sheets
  • an example of how to use the editing marks (this could also be a handout you can give to the students or post in the classroom).

If you would like to pair them with my Daily Language worksheets you can grab them HERE! These are great morning work activities that continue to build the student's understanding of grammar and editing of their work.

Mentor Sentences in Alignment with CKLA Unit 1

By Rachel Thiry

Looking for away to incorporate grammar and writing skills into your reading? Mentor sentences are a great way to teach authentic grammar and writing skills. These mentor sentences go along with CKLA's Unit 1 - Classic Tales Reader. There are many different ways to use mentor sentences within your classroom.

-Large Group

-Small Group

-Indepenent Work

Freebie Anchor Chart - ARMS!

Mentor sentences are carefully selected sentences from literature or professional writing that serve as models for students to learn from. These sentences demonstrate various grammatical structures, literary techniques, and writing styles that students can incorporate into their own writing. By incorporating these elements into their own writing, students can improve their overall writing proficiency and create more engaging and well-rounded pieces. Mentor sentences also offer a unique opportunity for students to learn from and model after renowned authors and writers, helping them to develop their own personal voice and style. Ultimately, mentor sentences are a valuable tool for any student looking to enhance their writing capabilities.

Includes an answer key!

They are used in a specific daily format:

Day 1: Notice - During notice you will take any and all notice about the sentences and write them down. It could be as easy as "this sentence starts with a capital letter" to "this is a compound sentence". You are encouraging students to look deeply into what makes up that sentence.

Day 2: Parts of Speech - On this day you will break down the actual grammatical make-up of the sentence. Does it have two verbs, 3 nouns, pronouns? You can also connect this to morphology and/or spelling if you would like.

Day 3: Revise - On the revise day we really want to focus on the understanding that revising is differnent than actual editing. During revising you can use this acronym to help students understand.

A- Add sentences or words to enhance your writing.

R- Remove any unnecessary words or sentences.

M- Move words, sentences or clauses.

S- Substitute words with more exciting vocabulary.

Day 4: Imitate - On day four students will imitate the structure of the sentence, but change the meaning of the sentence by adding their own nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

Thank You,

Rachel and Judy
