CONTEXT CLUES is an important skill that students must master in order to improve and enhance their comprehension of texts. When coming across an unknown word, a student can use other words in the text that are usually in the same sentence or nearby sentences that provide clues to the meaning of the unfamiliar word. This skill is especially important for students to apply not only on state exams, but to any text or reading they come across.

This Context Clues Bundle provides a variety of fun opportunities for students to learn how to use context clues to determine the meanings of unknown words as they read.

The bundle includes an in-depth step-by-step lesson plan that carefully guides teachers in showing students “HOW TO” both identify and use different context clues types to figure out the meaning of unknown words. The bundle also includes Reading Passages, PowerPoints, Practice Worksheets, Fun Activities, Task Cards, Assessments, Posters, ANSWER KEYS, and more!

This resource focuses on the following five Context Clues types:

✨ Definition clues

✨ Synonym clues

✨ Antonym clues

✨ Example clues

✨ Inference clues

All PowerPoints, Worksheets, and Posters are visually appealing as they include a variety of fun and realistic graphics, borders, and background paper. Students will be attentive and engaged throughout the entire learning experience!

The PowerPoints cannot be edited due to copyright requirements made by contributing font and clip art artists.

Printable PDF and Google Drive versions are included, as well as a printable Reflection sheet that will allow them to reflect on the ideas presented.

A Chalk Talk is a way to have a silent discussion about a question. Pre-reading and anticipatory activities are comprehension strategies that are used before reading to activate students' prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic. Completed before reading, this engaging Chalk Talk will stimulate students' interest in a topic and set a purpose for reading.

INCLUDED WITH YOUR PURCHASE:

The included Teacher's Guide includes access to the link that will allow you to make your own copy of the resource for use in Google Classroom/Google Drive.

IDEAS FOR USING THIS RESOURCE:

  • Collaborative Printed Pre-Reading Activity:  A printable version of the questions is also included so that the Chalk Talk activity can be conducted in the classroom using chart paper. Hatchet Pre-Reading Chalk Talk Group Activity-NO PREP Middle School ELA

By Perfectly Planned Designs

This Pre-Reading Chalk Talk is a great no-prep activity that you can use to introduce the novel, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. This PRINTABLE and DIGITAL lesson is completed in small groups and is more interactive than any Anticipation Guide I’ve ever used! As they complete this Chalk Talk, students will be activating prior knowledge about the deeper issues in the story. You will love this well-organized activity that allows students to collaborate with each other interactively, whether it be at their devices working on the same file, or moving around the room!

  • Digital Pre-Reading Chalk Talk
  • Printable Pre-Reading Chalk Talk Questions
  • Student Reflection Sheet

Note: This resource can be completed as a classroom activity on chart paper or online with laptops, Chromebooks, tablets, or any device that supports Google Slides. The included Teacher's Guide includes access to the link that will allow you to make your own copy of the resource for use in Google Classroom/Google Drive.

IDEAS FOR USING THIS RESOURCE:

  • Collaborative Online Pre-Reading Activity: Divide students among six groups and have them rotate through the six pre-reading Chalk Talk questions, reflecting on a different aspect of the text at each station.  They answer the question in their group, then add comments on their classmate's answers in other groups. The best part of this activity is that ALL the students in your classwork SIMULTANEOUSLY on the same file as you supervise!  Only one file to have to open and grade!

  • Collaborative Printed Pre-Reading Activity:  A printable version of the questions is also included so that the Chalk Talk activity can be conducted in the classroom using chart paper. Simply print and cut out the thought-provoking questions and paste them on 6 pieces of chart paper and allow students to travel to each poster in groups and leave answers/comments using post-its and/or markers.

May Morning Meeting Work Slides

By Professional Development and Teacher Prep

Do your students need May Morning Meeting Slides? Using different May Morning Week can lead to tremendous growth academically and socially. The May Morning Slides can be utilized along with your greeting and other activities.  The May Morning Meeting questions should be used during the month of May with your students but could be used during other months too.

There are spring questions, Memorial Day questions, and others to celebrate the different holidays in May. All of the questions are on Google Slides that can be used every morning during your Morning Meeting routine. All you have to do is bring up the next Google Slide each morning for that day. There are 20 EDITABLE and DIVERSE slides just for the month of May! If you use my Morning Meeting Question of The Day (180 slides), you can use one question from that and one seasonal or monthly question each day. You would just ask two questions a day instead of one! =)

Students will create connections and develop deep discussions with the questions.  Therefore, the skills they are learning during Morning Meeting will lead to connections within their reading texts. Students who practice those skills outside of reading will most likely utilize those same skills while reading.

Additionally, the May Question of The Day will create deep relationships between you and your students! If you have my other Morning Meeting Slides then you understand how powerful these questions can be!

This is also an excellent resource to use with your remote learners or to assign to your students’ laptops. You could assign one or more slides to their learning management system for morning meetings or writing or reading activities.

“Morning Meeting is an engaging way to start each day, build a strong sense of community, and set children up for success socially and academically.” -Responsive Classroom
