Sizeoftheproblemactivities, 4th, School Counseling, No Prep, Task Cards
By Elena Tenisi
Do you have kiddos who struggle with appropriate reactions to situations? This activity can help!
Packed with 20 scenario cards, students will have the opportunity to read through them and decide just how big the problem really is.
Included are three fuzzy monsters; big, medium, and small. Cut them out and laminate them. Have students read each scenario and sort them depending on the size of the problem. (You should have three different sorting piles). If it's a big problem, have them place the scenario card on the big monster. If it’s a medium problem, have them place the scenario card on the medium monster. If it’s a small problem, have them place the scenario card on the small monster.
Works best if all pieces, (monsters and scenario cards) are laminated.
Great for 1:1 or small group sessions.
Enjoy!

How to use these Empathy Task Cards ?
Option 1: Use these task cards as a catalyst for discussion with a small group, an individual or during your group time.
You may choose to add the Feeling Character Cards as a way for your students to respond to the scenarios. You read the scenario and your student holds up the feeling card they think best represents the situation.
Feelings included are:
Frustrated. Nervous. Angry. Upset. Annoyed. Worried. Sick. Scared. Cold. Thirsty. Hungry. Tired. Excited. Surprised. Proud. Confident. Unsure. Embarrassed.
Option 2: For students already reading and/or writing, these task cards are great as a ‘think-pair-share’ exercise, or students can write their responses using the recording sheet provided.
Option 3: Role play the different scenarios and invite students to discuss the situations and how each person might be feeling. Use the questions prompts to help guide discussions.
