In Task 1 students will read an informational text about Christmas and then find their way through a maze by answering true or false comprehension questions. If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word.

In Task 2 students will complete a crossword puzzle by answering ten questions. Answering these questions correctly will reveal some hidden letters which need to be unscrambled to reveal the second word.

In Task 3 students will sort 27 timeline task cards about famous holidays, putting them in order from the earliest date in the year to the latest. When they have finished, their third word will be revealed.

In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word. All of the BOOM Cards™ activities are self-marking.

Games/Activities Included:

Gumdrop Hop Board Game- players roll a die and move through the board game using items you already have in your classroom (counters, small blocks, holiday erasers, etc) each player reads the word and traces the word on the recording page. To make this game more fun, use real gumdrops as your playing pieces.

Feed the Gingerbread- students will sort peppermint CVC words by their short vowel and feed the gingerbread man (or gingerbread girl) the correct word.

This Christmas addition activity is a fun and engaging hands on math center for students to practice addition facts using number bonds, tens frames, number lines or number sentences to solve each addition problem using objects as counters on math mats. Check out the preview for a detailed look at each addition mat available!

What is Included:

  • Addition Task Cards with sums up to 20

How to Use:

Depending on the exact addition skill being taught, teachers will choose one of the addition mats for students to use to work on each addition problem. Counters should be provided to assist students with solving each addition equation. Students will draw one math fact card and solve it using the counters on the math mat. There is a recording sheet available should the teacher wish for students to record the addition facts they solved.

These addition cards make a great task box activity. The cards and counters can be stored in the same box for easy set up, clean up and storage.

WAYS TO USE TASK CARDS in your classroom: Ideas for fun holiday math activities and other ways to engage students before Winter break

  • Play SCOOT- Place each card on a desk and give students the recording sheet. Students will scoot between stations as they solve problems. 

  • Set up a scavenger hunt- place cards around the room as students do a gallery walk and work on solving problems in pairs or independently

  • Four Corners for multiple choice- Determine which corner of the room will represent answers A, B, C, and D: display a digital version of the Task Card, give students thinking time, then students go to the corner of the answer they choose.

  • Morning work, warm up, bell ringer- display task card digitally

  • Small group guided practice- easily differentiate and scaffold in small math groups

  • Mini lessons- guide and model how to solve word problems for students

  • Independent practice during math rotations or math centers

  • Partner work during math rotations or math centers

  • Exit ticket or check for understanding using Google Forms
