Citing evidence is an important skill that students MUST master to demonstrate credibility, proficiency, and sense of eloquence. This resource includes four rubrics that capture students’ level of mastery when using evidence. These rubrics evaluate students’ abilities to support their ideas, inferences, claims, and/or responses with relevant text evidence. It also evaluates the strength and thoroughness of their explanations/analysis of evidence.
All 8 Rubric pages are EDITABLE for you to adjust and modify to meet your needs!
The four rubrics come in two different variations (totaling 8 rubrics):
✅ Variation #1: The FOUR rubrics are created individually on one page and includes a “Comments/Feedback” section for you to complete.
✅ Variation #2: The same FOUR rubrics are minimized to two (of the same rubric) on one page without the “Comments/Feedback” section.
Please note, the editable version does not contain the same fonts and borders that are in the PDF version because they are copyrighted materials by contributing clip art artists. This resource features everything you'll need to lead students through the process of writing an analytical essay about Romeo and Juliet. The resource features 5 writing prompts which will motivate students to think with nuance about important themes in the play. The resource also includes scaffolding to help students select evidence, generate an outline, and begin writing. For teachers, the resource features an assessment rubric which can be used to grade and provide feedback on students' analytical writing.
Here's what you'll find in this editable 8-page resource:
- Analytical Writing Assignment: Challenge students to take their interpretations one step further by writing an analytical paper on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Let students choose from one of 5 thought-provoking sample topics — or invite them to develop a topic of their own. Includes a handout introducing students to the elements in an analytical essay as well as a scaffolded writing schedule with each step in the essay writing process. (4 pages)

Have stacks of essays and writing assignments you need to grade and looking for a quick and easy way to grade them? Look no further, scoop up these Writing Peer Assessments which come 2 per page and put the bulk of the grading task on the students themselves! Working with their peers, students first read the writing assignments or essays, then list their strengths and weaknesses. At this point, you can also give them copies of rubrics to reference as well. After doing a deep-dive into the writing assignment, students then assign a grade and staple their Peer Writing Assessment slip to the front and all you need to do is review the comments and decide if you agree with the grade given. In the end, the grade given by the teacher is final! Although I don't utilize this method for EVERY essay I grade, I definitely turn to these peer assessments when grading becomes overwhelming!

The areas that are reviewed on the rubric are as follows: research report topic and flow - opening and closing relate with one another, using quotations throughout from any sources used, research materials used relate to topic researched, staying on task, grammar/punctuation/spelling, and working with others. This rubric scores research report writing assignment out of 18 possible points. The rating scale use is a 3, 2, 1, & 0.

- This resource consists of one passage titled “Birthday Surprise” with six differentiated question worksheets (Multiple-Choice, Short Answer, and Short Response) to help you differentiate for students of ALL levels. Three of the worksheets require students to use evidence/details from the passage to support ideas. Worksheets come in different formats. ANSWER KEYS for all worksheets are included!
Level Complexity:
- Question Worksheets range from basic comprehension questions (lower-level)
to inferential questions (higher-level).
ALL Questions Worksheets consist of the same passage!
This can be used as a quiz, test, formative assessment, homework assignment, classwork assignment, or can even be used during guided practice! A great idea would be to see how well students perform with the basic comprehension questions, and if they do well on that, you can challenge them further by giving them the inferential thinking question worksheets!

The resource features a glossary with definitions of 7 types of figurative language as well as examples of how they're used in passages from the play. The resource also includes a three-page quiz in which students have to identify the type of figurative language used in each of 40 quotations from Romeo and Juliet. For teachers, the resource features an answer key that will enable you to grade students' quizzes quickly and efficiently.

- Glossary of Figurative Language: The glossary features definitions for the 7 types of figurative language which appear most prominently in Romeo and Juliet: metaphor, simile, paradox, oxymoron, personification, apostrophe, and hyperbole.
