This reading passage examines the short story of a bully who is mean to others in order to protect himself from other bullies. Students will evaluate the morality of his actions and the level of choice he has by studying the factors which prompt him to behave the way he does.

It’s essential that young people develop empathy for those who are different to them. This resource examines the short story of a teenage boy who gradually reveals his LGBTQ+ identity to different groups of people at his school. At one point, and for a brief moment, he becomes a victim of bullying until a friend of his moves from being a “bystander” to an “upstander” and speaks up against this negative treatment. He challenges the boy's homophobic comments, offensive remarks, and attitudes (in a nonviolent way) making his LGBTQ friend feeling safe, valued, and reassured. This short passage leaves readers feeling inspired and better understanding the positive impact empathy can have on an LGBTQ+ individual.
Many LGBTQ+ students will find themselves struggling with the unknown. The way in which students respond to LGBTQ+ identities and relationships could provide key support and understanding for their peers. Within our classrooms, we may have teens who are discovering their own sexual identity. This resource, and story, highlights positive ways that students might respond to their LGBTQ+ peers.

It’s essential that young people develop empathy for those who are different to them. This resource examines the short story of a teenage boy who kept his LGBTQ+ identity a secret from even his closest friends out of fear of being rejected and losing them. He eventually musters the courage to reveal his only secret to his best friend Jacob. To both Ethan and the reader's surprise, Jacob's reaction and response leaves readers feeling inspired and better understanding the positive impact empathy and a willingness to listen and act can be on an LGBTQ+ individual.
Many LGBTQ+ students will find themselves struggling with the unknown. The way in which students respond to LGBTQ+ identities and relationships could provide key support and understanding for their peers. Within our classrooms, we may have teens who are discovering their own sexual identity. This resource, and story, highlights positive ways that students might respond to their LGBTQ+ peers.
Through reading the passage and delving into reflection questions, your students will learn important ways to show empathy and support for others. Students will also recognize and examine examples of unsupportive behaviors and actions that can be hurtful to LGBTQ+ friends who fear coming out or just came out. They will make connections between these key ideas and the passage under study. They will also learn about why many LGBTQ+ teens hide or disguise their sexual orientation and/or gender identity for and brainstorm healthy coping strategies to help navigate LGBTQ+ conflicts related to coming out. Students can engage in meaningful discussions about bullying using the questions in this resource. This resource includes 64 Writing/Discussion Questions related to bullying, cyberbullying, bystander, upstander, victimization, effects of bullying, etc. Introducing the topic of bullying in the classroom can open up opportunities for debate, critical thinking, self-reflection, and an overall better understanding of the impact that bullying can have on a person. Through these meaningful writing, discussion, and/or reflection questions, students will have an opportunity to examine bullying and study the many forms in which it may appear. They will reflect about the detrimental effects of bullying and gain insight into the impact it can have on different aspects of our daily lives.
Through these writing and discussion sessions, students will have opportunities to reflect about:
▶ what is bullying and its different forms
▶ the detrimental effects of bullying
▶ how to be an Upstander and how to report bullying
▶ effective strategies to navigate difficult situations and challenges with bullies
▶ ways to cope and overcome bullying
▶ how they can build the confidence they need to stand up to bullies
▶ the connection between empathy and bullying prevention
▶ best solutions in different bullying situations
These questions can ignite intense student discussions and expose students to different viewpoints about bullying. It would be interesting to see how students think about certain issues and understand others' perspectives about what they think is the best way to navigate/handle bullying.

✅ This resource includes 64 Bullying Writing/Discussion Task Cards (both Colored and B&W). You can use the questions/prompts as discussion topics or writing prompts – or BOTH! You can use the B&W Task Cards to print out on ANY color paper!
✅ These Task Cards can be used as part of a larger lesson, in guided small groups, whole-class discussions, partner discussion before sharing out with the larger group or class, or even one-on-one with a teacher, guidance counselor, or parent/guardian! These Task Cards contain the same questions in the Worksheets.
✅ You can print the Task Cards out on gloss paper or regular paper and laminate. You may also organize them in a binder ring.

These Imagery Graphic Organizers, which include differentiated versions, can be used to help students keep track of an author's use of descriptive words, phrases, and language (SENSORY DETAILS) and think about the effect it has on readers. Students are also challenged to think about what the imagery reveals about the setting, characters, theme, situation, etc.
Differentiated Aspects
✅ Higher-Level Graphic Organizers: These graphic organizers come without imagery examples and include an additional task question.
✅ Lower-Level Graphic Organizers: These graphic organizers come with imagery examples and a focus on evidence - and do not include additional task questions, so that it's less overwhelming for struggling learners.

✅ You can simply print out these graphic organizers and distribute to students. This version is also included in Google Slides - Text boxes already created!
PowerPoint version
✅ Also included is a “PowerPoint version” of the Imagery Graphic Organizers with visually appealing fun clipart and fonts – UNEDITABLE – due to copyright purposes.
