FREEBIE-French SPRING Writing Prompts-Free Writing Activity-LE PRINTEMPS

By La trousse de Madame

This French Spring Writing Prompt resource is the fast and easy No-Prep way of adding a little boost to your writing program all while getting students to progress with their decoding and encoding skills. The vocabulary used in this resource seamlessly aligns with the Science of Reading progression recommended by many school boards and is in lock step with what is being promoted by IDAPEL and ONLit websites for teaching French language in today's classrooms.

You can find the full version here French Spring Writing Prompt!

Once you have a grasp on all the simple sounds in French, the magic happens when you get students writing. They don't even notice that all the words used are from their very own memory banks and are all decodable words from past lessons.

I love to hear about how you are using my resources in your classrooms and with your students. Feel free to follow my shop by clicking the green star beside my shop name. This way, you can find out when I publish new materials right at your fingertips!

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in writing and confidence in writing strategies.

The prompts are designed to offer many variations for students to use their imaginations and to build confidence in their own writing.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French writing skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These prompts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing writing proficiency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven passages on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

If you love this resource:

***1. French SOR Sound Cards

***2. French Decodable Reading

***3. Roles et Responsabilités

French Getting to Know You BINGO!

By Churros and Croissants

This BINGO card is a great ice breaker for the first days of French class! Each student receives a card and then moves around the classroom meeting new people and asking questions in English to get to know them better. When they find someone who can say "Oui" to a box, they will cross it off and write that person's name on it. The first person to get a BINGO reads their card out loud so the class can get to know their new friends as well!

This activity is designed for students with no previous French knowledge (MS French, Intro to Languages, Foundations of French, and French I), but my returning French 2 students loved it as well.

Product includes:

  • Black and White presentation page with weather, pictures and I can statements.
  • Journal page to help students write their name, the day, and the date.
  • Journal page to help students write day, date, and weather.
  • Journal pages include vocabulary lists. Once students know how to fill it out, they can work independently early on.
  • 8 weather terms on the presentation page
  • Lists of possible ways to use the vocabulary and activities to be used today

Key Features:

  • Introduction to weather vocabulary
  • Differentiated Learning: Suitable for learners of different proficiency levels, with options for scaffolded or extension activities.
  • Printable and Digital Formats: Accessible in Google Slides. Google slides can be downloaded as images to be used as digital worksheets or downloaded as a PDF.

How to Use:

Bell Ringers - Daily Journals for French class.

  1. Day 1:  Show them the presentation and model for them.

  2. Day 2:

  3. Print, copy, and have them ready for students as they walk in.

  4. Saving on paper? Copy machine never works? Download the slide as a png and have students write on them on a touchscreen device or their own papers. My students use the app Chrome Canvas on their Chromebooks. I loan styluses to students during class. They aren’t too expensive. Some students just write with their fingers.

  5. Day 2:

  6. The Calendar Talk - Daily Journal Writing is designed to help students start reading and writing immediately to discuss the day, date,  and weather. Students can also begin speaking in the same class period with some guidance. Depending in the class, in the first few days, students write independently but you answer the questions out loud so they can hear pronunciation until they feel more confident to read their answers.

  7. Days 3-5: Continue discussing responses after the journal each day. This will help them with writing and speaking.

  8. Days 6 and on (or when you know they are ready): When used consistently, students will be able to speak with the phrases very quickly. Have them sit in groups and discuss their journals as you walk around the room. I often keep track of points on Class Dojo and give them a goal to shoot for.

  9. Scaffold so that students will be able to talk without the journal eventually. You will be surprised at how quickly they are able to use the words and phrases on their own.

  10. Use the words and phrases that they have learned in other activities.

  11. Add the questions and answers to write stories as a class or individually. I tell students to include the day, date, weather, etc in all of their stories.

  12. Ask students what another student said work on other perspectives, i.e. I, you, he, she, etc.

  13. Student A: C’est mercredi.

  14. Student B: Elle dit, «C’est mercredi.»

Benefits for Students:

  • Enhances vocabulary acquisition and retention through active engagement.

#Restezchezvous - French 20 questions - No prep speaking game

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

#Restezchezvous - French 20 questions game - No prep speaking game

The game of 20 questions is a fun and effective way to practice forming French questions. This version of the game includes 48 words that are actually ideas of things we can do while sheltering at home. It is NOT intended to be depressing in any way and the only words related to COVID-19 are porter un masque and du gel hydroalcoolique.

Included:

1 game in French only

1 game in English only

Have students work in small groups of 2-4 or project the game and use it as a whole class activity.

This game includes 48 words. Many of the words may be new to your students as this game is meant not only to practice forming questions, but also to build vocabulary. I like to allow my students to look at the game chart while they play until they’re somewhat familiar with the words.

One student in the small group or class chooses a word on the chart. Other students ask up to 20 questions trying to guess the secret word.

The student who has chosen the secret word can answer using the following responses: OUI - NON - PARFOIS - RAREMENT - GÉNÉRALEMENT - PEUT-ÊTRE - CELA DÉPEND - PROBABLEMENT

Alternative game play:

To change up the game and to make it more challenging as well as practicing other skills, have the student who chooses the secret word describe it to others in the group. Instead of asking questions about the secret word, other students listen to the description and guess it.

French Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening Activity - KEVIN

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

French Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening Activity: RENCONTREZ KEVIN - Distance Learning

The personal description of the personnage in this activity can either be used a speaking or writing prompt. Reading and listening comprehension included.

Sometimes it’s difficult to come up with good ideas for creative story-telling or imaginative writing. Very often, we’re so focused on producing correct grammar that we forget how much fun it can be to tell stories! If you’ve been looking for creative prompts to get the ball rolling for your upper-intermediate level students, I know you’ll have fun with this resource. It includes a story to listen to and read along, then students can complete listening comprehension and 1st conditional SI CLAUSE activities. Read on to find out more how you can use this resource for creative writing and speaking.

Scroll down for links to more resources like this one, and check out my growing bundle!

Here's what you need to know about KEVIN:

  • c'est un homme de 38 ans
  • il vit en concubinage
  • il ne veut pas d'enfant
  • il vient de perdre son emploi
  • sa copine est une “youtubeuse” célèbre
  • il ne se déplace qu'à vélo

INCLUDED:

  • Detailed background information about KEVIN
  • Si clause writing activity - 1st conditional - Futur simple + present tense
  • Story about Kevin based on his background information - Approximately 500 words
  • MP4 audio recording - Listen to the story read aloud
  • Listening comprehension cloze activity

USE THIS RESOURCE FOR CREATIVE WRITING OR STORY-TELLING, AND TO IMPROVE READING AND LISTENING SKILLS - STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1: Read the personal details about KEVIN, an interesting personnage.

STEP 2: Once you know KEVIN'S background, complete the si clause prompts provided. They all begin in the futur simple, and you should finish them in the present tense. This step will help you build up to writing a story!

STEP 3: Listen to a story about KEVIN. Don't read the text yet. Just listen, and see how much you can understand.

STEP 4: Complete the cloze activity to test your listening comprehension before you read the actual text. Fill in 20 blanks with words you hear in the MP4 recording. A word bank is provided.

STEP 5: Check your work as you read the full text for the first time. Take some time to read the English translation provided to compare sentence structure. Be sure to note new vocabulary words and expressions.

STEP 6: It's time to try your hand at creative writing in French! The story you listened to will give you an idea of what kind of story you can write, but be sure to use your imagination! The background information and the si clauses you wrote will give you something to work with. The more you read and write in French, the better your understanding of sentence structure will be. You'll also be amazed at how much vocabulary you will learn! Use as many verb tenses, pronouns, and other grammatical structures as possible in your story.

HOW CAN YOU WRITE A STORY WITH A FRIEND?

If you’re writing, you can even do this exercise via email or messaging. You send a line, and your friend writes back with the next one. It will be so much fun to see what kind of crazy stories you come up with. The possibilities are endless.

HOW CAN YOU TELL A STORY WITH A FRIEND?

If you want to use this resource as a speaking activity, just take turns telling the next line of the story. You will laugh as you see how quickly the storyline can turn.
