FRENCH Self-Assessment FREEBIE- Auto-Evaluation- Weekly Check-in- FREE

By La trousse de Madame

French Weekly Self-Assessment FREEBIE

This handy self-assessment sheet is designed largely for French teachers at the K-2 level. The quick and easy table means students just quickly mark the emoji that best suits how they feel about their week.

It takes students a few weeks to really get used to being reflective about their role in the learning process but believe me, it is so rewarding when they start to really understand the role they play in making each week successful.

Who can use this resource?

I use this resource for Grade 1 and Grade 2 and have passed it along to our Kindergarten team and we all love its simplicity

How do I use it?

Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Just copy enough pages for your class. I like to do this a few times in small group batches until students really get the hang of it. Then, we can do it as a whole group at the end of the week.

I reflect back to it often during the week so students are primed to put some metacognition into play.

If you love this resource:

***1. French SOR Sound Cards

***2. French Decodable Reading

***3. Roles et Responsabilites

***4. French Number Line

***5. French Attention Grabbers

***6. French Speaking Passport

***7. French Pyramid Reading

Some of the Benefits of this resource:

  1. Students use hands on materials
  2. Boost confidence in French language acquisition with whole group, small group, independent work, and one-to-one instruction using the same resource
  3. Students grow in their understanding of their role in their own education
  4. Boosts confidence and helps with classroom management as students are more considerate of their evaluation

French Getting to Know You BINGO!

By Churros and Croissants

This BINGO card is a great ice breaker for the first days of French class! Each student receives a card and then moves around the classroom meeting new people and asking questions in English to get to know them better. When they find someone who can say "Oui" to a box, they will cross it off and write that person's name on it. The first person to get a BINGO reads their card out loud so the class can get to know their new friends as well!

This activity is designed for students with no previous French knowledge (MS French, Intro to Languages, Foundations of French, and French I), but my returning French 2 students loved it as well.

FRENCH | BACK-TO-SCHOOL/RENTRÉE | 4 CORNERS/4 COINS | ICEBREAKER | GET TO KNOW

By French Made Fun!

This is a freebie for you!

This game of "Four Corners" is not new or unique; however, this one will work great for your middle schoolers who need to get up and move, and you'll find they are more apt to share without raising their hands or writing it down. This quick and easy, no prep and no printing activity will allow you to truly get to know them on a personal level very quickly.

It's HIGHLY visual so this could even fly in a Core French classroom (Grades 5 - 9); however, I use it in an immersion setting (Grades 5 and 6). It could comfortably be used in any Immersion or French first-language classroom (Grades 3 - 9). As with all of my products, it's not at all babyish and doesn't feature fonts that are frilly or hard-to-read.

For this activity, simply project and GO. I let my students know that they will have to choose their response and move to the corner of the room that suits their answer. You can either click through the slides, have a student touch your SmartBoard to move them along, or you can use a remote clicker or mouse (I do while I'm playing!) to keep the slides rolling.

This Google Slide Deck features :

  • 29 pre-created, non-modifiable question slides with 4 options to choose from.
  • A template for you to use if you'd like to add in your own questions at the end of the presentation.

Other ways to play:

  • I've also allowed students independently to each create a slide and add it into the mix on day 2! Should you choose this option, simply copy the last slide into a Google Slide (11" x 8.5") and share a copy to each student in Google Classroom. Let the magic begin!
  • You can choose to extend this activity by having your students huddled in their corners chat about their preferences, or share with the whole group. You can also (I do!!) play WITH them and get to know your students based on these small conversations in the "corners" of your classroom.

I hope you have a G R E A T back-to-school, and hope your kids love you! I sure appreciate all of you!

Don't forget to have fun and be real!

Kaitlyn.

FREE Calendar Talk - Mon Journal Quotidien with I CAN statements, Bell Ringer

By Cheryl Bennett

The Calendar Talk - Bell Ringer, Daily Journal Writing is designed to help students start reading and writing immediately to discuss the day, date,  and weather. Students can also begin speaking in the same class period with some guidance.

Product includes:

  • Black and White presentation page with weather, pictures and I can statements.
  • Journal page to help students write their name, the day, and the date.
  • Journal page to help students write day, date, and weather.
  • Journal pages include vocabulary lists. Once students know how to fill it out, they can work independently early on.
  • 8 weather terms on the presentation page
  • Lists of possible ways to use the vocabulary and activities to be used today

Key Features:

  • Introduction to weather vocabulary
  • Differentiated Learning: Suitable for learners of different proficiency levels, with options for scaffolded or extension activities.
  • Printable and Digital Formats: Accessible in Google Slides. Google slides can be downloaded as images to be used as digital worksheets or downloaded as a PDF.

How to Use:

Bell Ringers - Daily Journals for French class.

  1. Day 1:  Show them the presentation and model for them.

  2. Day 2:

  3. Print, copy, and have them ready for students as they walk in.

  4. Saving on paper? Copy machine never works? Download the slide as a png and have students write on them on a touchscreen device or their own papers. My students use the app Chrome Canvas on their Chromebooks. I loan styluses to students during class. They aren’t too expensive. Some students just write with their fingers.

  5. Day 2:

  6. The Calendar Talk - Daily Journal Writing is designed to help students start reading and writing immediately to discuss the day, date,  and weather. Students can also begin speaking in the same class period with some guidance. Depending in the class, in the first few days, students write independently but you answer the questions out loud so they can hear pronunciation until they feel more confident to read their answers.

  7. Days 3-5: Continue discussing responses after the journal each day. This will help them with writing and speaking.

  8. Days 6 and on (or when you know they are ready): When used consistently, students will be able to speak with the phrases very quickly. Have them sit in groups and discuss their journals as you walk around the room. I often keep track of points on Class Dojo and give them a goal to shoot for.

  9. Scaffold so that students will be able to talk without the journal eventually. You will be surprised at how quickly they are able to use the words and phrases on their own.

  10. Use the words and phrases that they have learned in other activities.

  11. Add the questions and answers to write stories as a class or individually. I tell students to include the day, date, weather, etc in all of their stories.

  12. Ask students what another student said work on other perspectives, i.e. I, you, he, she, etc.

  13. Student A: C’est mercredi.

  14. Student B: Elle dit, «C’est mercredi.»

Benefits for Students:

  • Enhances vocabulary acquisition and retention through active engagement.
  • Encourages critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Fosters creativity and self-expression through daily writing practice.

Why Choose This Resource?

  • Developed by an experienced French teacher with
  • It fosters student engagement.

Tu préfères - 10 French graphics for "this or that" type questions FREEBIE

By Frenchified

Do you start off your class with a quick poll or check-in question? This set of graphics can be used from day one to get students using French. This sampler has 10 different graphics that you can use in Desmos, Nearpod, Peardeck, or on a social media post to get input from your students. Each graphic gives them a choice of two different things. You can use it in different levels by adjusting the task.

Level 1 - from the beginning, you can have them just choose between option A and option B. Get lots of comprehensible input by having a class discussion about who prefers what. Later on, have them write complete sentences starting with "je préfère."

Level 2 - have students start to add more detail to their responses. Tell them to include details - where, when, with whom. Have them write more complex sentences explaining why they prefer something.

Level 3 - have students make their choice and then talk about the last time they ______.

Some graphics have very basic vocabulary, some have more advanced items - but all are easy to understand due to the images. There are also some cultural graphics mixed in.

If you like the freebie sampler of 10, there is another set of 190 - so you'd have enough to make it through the entire school year using one per day!

FREEBIE-French SPRING Writing Prompts-Free Writing Activity-LE PRINTEMPS

By La trousse de Madame

This French Spring Writing Prompt resource is the fast and easy No-Prep way of adding a little boost to your writing program all while getting students to progress with their decoding and encoding skills. The vocabulary used in this resource seamlessly aligns with the Science of Reading progression recommended by many school boards and is in lock step with what is being promoted by IDAPEL and ONLit websites for teaching French language in today's classrooms.

You can find the full version here French Spring Writing Prompt!

Once you have a grasp on all the simple sounds in French, the magic happens when you get students writing. They don't even notice that all the words used are from their very own memory banks and are all decodable words from past lessons.

I love to hear about how you are using my resources in your classrooms and with your students. Feel free to follow my shop by clicking the green star beside my shop name. This way, you can find out when I publish new materials right at your fingertips!

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in writing and confidence in writing strategies.

The prompts are designed to offer many variations for students to use their imaginations and to build confidence in their own writing.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French writing skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These prompts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing writing proficiency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven passages on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

French Comprehensible Input Story - Le Mauvais Espion

By Frenchified

Are you looking to improve student comprehension and proficiency in French?  This French comprehensible input short story is a fun sample of what can be done with French CI instruction.  It is a sampler from the series of French CI units, available for level 1 and level 2 French.

This short story is for French learners who are just starting their studies. Very simple language with lots of repetition - but the story itself is interesting enough to hold their attention. It is the unit story that finishes unit 1 of the CI unit series - each unit uses comprehensible input to give your students a base of frequently used vocabulary words with some basic structures.  At the end of the unit, students should be able to easily read and understand the story - and with practice, they can retell the story as well.

These units are especially helpful if you want to use CI but:

  • You are required to use a district textbook
  • You need a little bit of structure as you get your feet wet with comprehensible input
  • You are required to give a district final, but want to use CI to teach your classes

The units are complete units with vocabulary and grammar in context - they cover the same material as the standard textbook programs, only with a more comprehensible input focus.

This free story can be used as a standalone activity as early as the first semester of French.

Includes:

  • short story in French
  • comprehension questions
  • story retell activity
  • mp4 animated video of the story

This story is part of the Bonjour! Comprehensible input unit 1 for beginning French. This will give you an idea of what the units are like - each unit builds up to a unit story based on the vocabulary and grammar of the unit.
