This French reading comprehension activity will allow you to read a short story, entirely in French.  It tells the story of a man who doesn't understand the importance of knowing when to use la bise.

Bryan is an American who is visiting France. He doesn't want to be rude, so he's prepared himself for the French custom of La Bise. But unfortunately, he didn't listen to the entire explanation in French class! Bryan's trip starts out fine but his cultural misunderstandings get him into more and more trouble.

This activity packet includes a 4 page story - appropriate for 2nd semester and later French students, with comprehension questions and other activities. Also includes a map about La Bise with questions and an infographic about French prisons (a topic that comes up in the reading) with comprehension questions. This activity could also be used as a sub activity.

French Decodable Sentence Strips that align with the Science of Reading in the K-2 French classroom. Students work on their phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, decoding and encoding skills and as they master the target sound.

Make a few copies of each card and insert into clear pockets to create a quick and easy reading centre; arrange a table with four copies to create a quiet reading group; use one-on-one with your students to assess reading levels, to gain insights to their decoding skills, encoding skills, and to inform your upcoming lesson plans. Students use whiteboard markers to sound out each sound in the word, each syllable, or each word in the sentence. What a great way to build confidence! Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple sentence strips to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Sentences are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Looking for a collaborative project this Winter that focuses on cultural traditions? Most of your students are probably already pretty familiar with Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years, and Valentine's Day. But have they ever heard of La Chandeleur, La Fête des Rois, Jour des Aieux, Carnaval, or dozens of other holidays celebrated throughout the Francophone world from December through February?

This flexible group project is a great way to expose your students to a wide variety of cultural traditions and practices in a short amount of time with minimal effort on your part!

J'utilise ces 27 cartes "J'ai... Qui a ?" une fois que mes élèves sont familiarisés avec les nombres décimaux et sont à l'aise avec les dixièmes et la valeur de position avec les nombres décimaux.

Si vous n'êtes pas familier, les jeux de cartes "J'ai... Qui a?" sont des activités en grand groupe qui renforcent leur capacité à lire et à dire ce qu'il y a sur les cartes. C'est une excellente activité de révision avant l'évaluation et je l'utilise actuellement avec mes élèves de 5e et 6e année ; mais il pourrait facilement être utilisé en 7e année comme échauffement ou rappel.

Dans ce document de 9 pages, vous trouverez :

• Explication du jeu et comment démarrer avec des exemples.
• 27 cartes pré-créées (9 cartes par feuille) comportant des droites numériques de 0 à 3 y compris les cartes "début" et "fin". Do you teach a foreign language to your students? This packet contains two center activities that help teach colors in English, Spanish and French! It is differentiated so that students who need more help can use the colored word cards and those who are more advanced can use the black and white cards. The first center activity, the students match the color name to the color splat on the color mats. There are color mats available in English, Spanish and French with word cards available with each color. Use Velcro on the word cards and the blank spaces to allow the word cards to stay in place. The second center activity is a matching/memory game where students pair the colored splat card with the correct color word. This center is also available in English, Spanish and French. Smash Doodles are a great way to assess French reading while encouraging creativity. I love using this at the end of the year to demonstrate that a student can read independently and show what they know. Plus, it's easy to grade!

The set up for these Smash Doodles (along with the rubric) make it easy to grade.

A Smash Doodle is a way to show what students have learned from the chapter or reading assigned. It involves creativity, color, the most important vocabulary, students' thoughts and questions.

Who is it for?

This assignment works for any level of French students. Any reading assignment can work with Smash Doodles. It can be used with novels meant for early language acquirers, short stories, poetry, etc. This assignment is automatically differentiated as students will choose the vocabulary that they need and not simply a list dictated by the teacher.

What does the assignment include?

This particular Smash Doodle assignment includes:

1. The title and chapter of the book
2. 5 vocabulary words in French with the English translation and a hand-drawn picture in color.
3. 3 thoughts about the chapter in French
4. 3 quotes from the book, in French
5. 3 questions in French. It could be things you are curious about or questions for characters
6. A main image that represents the chapter.

Print at 80% and include in your interactive journals.

There are many ways you can use this set of cards: ➤ Print, laminate, cut out, punch holes and attach on a ring for small groups to ask and answer questions. ➤ Project the pdf file in class to work in group or with your whole class and avoid printing. ➤ Use as a warm-up speaking activity with a conversation partner. As students enter the classroom have them choose 2-3 cards from a box. ➤ Students who finish their work earlier than others can choose a few of the cards and write out correct answers to false statements. ➤ Use as exit tickets. This two-sided chatty mat (sentence builder) is a learning aid aimed at developing speaking skills in French. It is aimed at helping learners structure their description of a picture (People, Location, Activity) in a methodical way so that they have a structure they can rely on. You can see the preview of the first page in the listing.

The resource offers a very clear structure, range of vocabulary for a range of picture scenarios, as well as a range of general conversation questions with sample answers.

A few Ideas/Suggestions on How to Use This Resource:

1. Adapt the Resource – Before introducing this resource to your students, you may wish to tweak it to better suit their needs.
2. Introduce and Expand Vocabulary – Go through the vocabulary with your students, identifying and labeling unfamiliar words in their native language. This can be done section by section or for the entire table, depending on your students and circumstances. Encourage them to add any additional relevant vocabulary!
3. Model Photo Descriptions – Demonstrate how to describe a photo, either yourself or together with students. Use PLA (People, Location, Action) and the acronym WhoWheRAC (Who, Where, Relationship, Appearance, Location) to guide their descriptions of people.
4. Encourage Regular Practice – Give students frequent opportunities to describe photos using the resource. An effective approach is to describe multiple photos in one single session, as this reinforces structured descriptions, boosts confidence and enhances motivation.
5. Incorporate Written Practice – If feasible, get students to write a photo description as homework using the resource as a guide. :)
