Thermometer showing increasing levels of anger and then with a space to think about what things make them feel that angry and how they can calm themselves down at different levels of anger.
Why do you need this?
The Anger Thermometer worksheet helps children become more aware of the intensity of their anger by categorizing it on a scale from calm to furious. This self-awareness is crucial for developing emotional intelligence and understanding the range of emotions they experience. By writing examples of when they have felt each level of anger, children can identify specific triggers or situations that lead to different levels of anger. This understanding allows them to anticipate and manage their responses more effectively in the future.
How and when might you use this?
This worksheet could be used in a variety of ways:
· In lessons on social-emotional learning to help students identify and understand the different levels of their anger and practice coping strategies.
· Following a conflict or behavioral incident a tool for self-reflection to identify their anger level and reflect on how they managed their emotions.
· During counselling sessions to support students in exploring their anger triggers and developing personalized coping strategies.
· As 1:1 support for a child struggling with anger management.
· During circle time discussions focused on emotions and self-regulation.
What’s included?
The worksheet features a color-coded thermometer bar ranging from “I’m calm” in green up to “I’m furious!” in red. Five stages of anger are delineated including calm, annoyed, frustrated, angry, and furious. At each level, students give examples of things that would trigger those feelings for them. Next, children self-strategize the best ways they can calm down at each anger level such as take deep breaths, squeeze a stress ball, walk away or tell the teacher.

When people do things we don’t like, we get upset, angry, hurt, and/or disappointed because they don’t act or behave in a manner that we want or expect them to. Sometimes, we try to force or manipulate them into acting and behaving a certain way. We need to give up on trying to control others by letting them make their own decisions and verbalizing and dealing with our disappointments in an appropriate manner.
It is important for teenagers to understand that the way they react and respond to situations can either add fuel to the fire or diffuse tension, resolve conflict, and minimize negative emotions. Teaching teens how to respond appropriately to situations both verbally and nonverbally, even when they are angry, hurt, and disappointed can greatly help them prevent conflicts from escalating.
These THREE activities will give students to practice managing their disappointments, anger, and concerns in an appropriate manner. Students will practice expressing their concerns, disappointments, or feelings in a way that is mature and respectful.
This resource features a total of 6 real-life, highly relevant scenarios that come in the following variations BOTH Print and Digital):
Variation #1 - Graphic Organizer-style with example - A worksheet that includes a total of two scenarios and an example of how NOT to respond in the given situations. Students will, instead, determine appropriate and mature ways to respond in such situations. (Variation #1 worksheets include a total of 3 worksheets / 2 scenarios on each worksheet.) Answer Keys are included for this variation.
Variation #2 - Writing Response-style - Worksheets that include one scenario (***the SAME scenarios in VARIATION #1 worksheets). This variation is a writing response-style worksheet. (Variation #2 worksheets include a total of 6 worksheets and the SAME exact scenarios in Variation #1 worksheets!) Students read the scenario and answer the following question:
How would you manage your emotions in this situation? How would you express your concern, disappointment, or feelings in a way that is mature and respectful?
☆☆☆ The different variations can greatly support your differentiation efforts!

Behavior Tracking Sheet for self-assessment
By Rebekah Poe Teaching
Students can complete this behavior tracker to show how well they were able to:
Follow directions
Participate
Have a positive attitude
Stay on task
Complete work
I added room for the teacher to write in how many (if any) prompts are acceptable to follow directions and stay on task. I also left room for a percentage of work that should be completed. I know often my special education students struggle to complete assignments due to lack of focus, etc. So I might put that one student needs to complete 70% of his assignment and then gradually increase it. There is space for that to be written in in the chart.
Students can choose a big smiley face, a small smiling face, and a frowning face to show how well they were able to maintain the directives. At the bottom there is room for teacher signature and comments. At the top, the student has space to write what assignment he or she is assessing.
Two sheets print per page to save paper.
