Cartoon Last Character Standing

Students will be given a list of Cartoon Characters to see how their characters are eliminated over a 10 day period during the Last Character Standing Games. They will be given a pair of dice that will be used to determine if the character moves on to the next day or if they are eliminated. When should students use a calculator in mathematics? When fluency with mathematical procedures without the help of a calculator are well established, students should be able to use calculators with more complex mathematical problems, real-life applications and calculations involving very large and small numbers.

These 30 follow me cards are a great way to revise compound and reverse percentages including increasing and decreasing, and compound interest and depreciation.

Play is similar to dominoes, where the cards are placed end to end with the question to the answers, but each question only has one answer. Students connect the questions and answers together forming a chain, with questions steadily getting harder.

A calculator is recommended for the final 15 questions at least.

Some ideas for how to use follow me cards:

• Have students race to connect the cards.
• Have a treasure hunt, around the classroom or outside. Students start with the starter card and record the solutions in the table.
• Students each take ownership of a card, and then get themselves in line correctly with the answers. If there are more than 30 students, assign some students as ‘managers’. If there are less than 30 students, the first students to connect their cards can be given the remaining cards.
• Cut each card in half and give the students a matching activity. They can then glue the answers into their books.

This is a fun activity for students to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and simplification of fractions by converting measurements for a recipe! The recipe comes from Sally's Baking Addiction, and it is her Peanut Butter Bars Recipe. This can be done as a whole group, in small groups, or by individual students. If you have the ability to have the students make the recipe after solving the puzzle, it is totally worth it! They will love being able to make something that they solved a puzzle for and have a delicious treat afterwards.

Students will be given a list of ingredients that have "weird" measurements on them. They will need to convert all of the measurements into the simplest form. Students will have to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and convert fractions from improper fractions to mixed numbers and put all of the measurements into simplest form. Once students solve the puzzle and get the correct answers that match the answer key, then they will receive the steps to prepare the Peanut Butter Bars/Cups. ** I recommend doing the bars. They are definitely easier to do, especially in a classroom setting, but the cups do look better. They both taste the same though.**
