Competitive Practice:

My students love a competition. I designed this activity to practice finding common denominators while building on that competitive spirit.

Students have a pile of cards which they flip one at a time. Students find the least common denominator of the two fractions on their card. The student with either the highest or lowest common denominator (teacher's choice) will the hand. The game continues until one student has all the cards.

Students get to practice an important skill while having fun.

   **Distribute the recording sheet that corresponds to the specific fraction skill you're focusing on (e.g., comparing fractions).
3. **Roll and Record:
   **Students take turns rolling the dice.
   They record the fractions they roll on the recording sheet.
4. **Practice Makes Perfect:
   **Depending on the skill being practiced, students will perform different actions based on the rolled fractions.

Students will be given a list of Cartoon Characters to see how their characters are eliminated over a 10 day period during the Last Character Standing Games. They will be given a pair of dice that will be used to determine if the character moves on to the next day or if they are eliminated. This is a fun activity for students to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and simplification of fractions by converting measurements for a recipe! The recipe comes from Sally's Baking Addiction, and it is her Peanut Butter Bars Recipe. This can be done as a whole group, in small groups, or by individual students. If you have the ability to have the students make the recipe after solving the puzzle, it is totally worth it! They will love being able to make something that they solved a puzzle for and have a delicious treat afterwards.

Students will be given a list of ingredients that have "weird" measurements on them. They will need to convert all of the measurements into the simplest form. Students will have to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and convert fractions from improper fractions to mixed numbers and put all of the measurements into simplest form. Once students solve the puzzle and get the correct answers that match the answer key, then they will receive the steps to prepare the Peanut Butter Bars/Cups. ** I recommend doing the bars. They are definitely easier to do, especially in a classroom setting, but the cups do look better. They both taste the same though.**

Fraction strips are used as a math manipulative and a more hands-on approach to teaching your students to visually see the value of each proper fraction to a whole.

This product is a digital puzzle that requires students to complete 25 converting mixed numbers to improper fractions. The link to the digital puzzle is on a clickable PDF that you would download once purchased. Students will put the answers in the answer box (numerator/denominator). This activity is no prep and is self checking. If the student puts the correct answer in, the answer box will turn green and a piece of the digital puzzle will appear in the green box to the right.
