Differentiated Calling Card Levels

Calling cards are differentiated by level. Simplifying fractions and finding equivalent fractions can be difficult for students. The differentiated levels will scaffold the skill as students build understanding and fluency with the concept of simplifying fractions.

★Level 1- Double the Simplified form (x2)

All calling cards in this level have a GCF of 2. The calling cards are double the simplified form. Students find the answer by dividing the calling card by 2/2. This level will help students gain an initial understanding of simplifying fractions and finding equivalent fractions.

★Level 2- Mixed Set 1: (x2, x3, or x5 simplified form)

All calling cards in this level have a GCF of 2, 3, or 5.  This level is designed to build off the previous level, but still scaffold the skill. Students only need to choose from 3 factors to find their answer. 

★Level 3- Mixed Challenging Set

This level contains a mixture of fraction call cards that have factors ranging from 2-10. This is the most challenging level as students will have a range of factors to choose from when simplifying the fraction.

All fraction boards include 24 fractions in their simplest form with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, & 12.

WHO? This set is designed for fourth and fifth-grade students learning to find equivalent fractions by reducing a fraction to the simplest form.

Common Core Aligned to 4th grade Number & Operations- Fraction Standard:

Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n × a)/(n × b) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.

Cartoon Last Character Standing

Students will be given a list of Cartoon Characters to see how their characters are eliminated over a 10 day period during the Last Character Standing Games. They will be given a pair of dice that will be used to determine if the character moves on to the next day or if they are eliminated. On the back is a series of questions to ensure that students are learning about experimental probability. Very fun and there will be a lot of laughs.

I love quick assessments that show me students understood the lesson. I built these exit tickets based on Into Math modules 1 - 20 for 5th grade. I use these after teaching the lesson, sending home the More Practice/Homework page to complete for homework, and then the next day they take the exit ticket. This is a fun activity for students to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and simplification of fractions by converting measurements for a recipe! The recipe comes from Sally's Baking Addiction, and it is her Peanut Butter Bars Recipe. This can be done as a whole group, in small groups, or by individual students. If you have the ability to have the students make the recipe after solving the puzzle, it is totally worth it! They will love being able to make something that they solved a puzzle for and have a delicious treat afterwards.

Students will be given a list of ingredients that have "weird" measurements on them. They will need to convert all of the measurements into the simplest form. Students will have to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and convert fractions from improper fractions to mixed numbers and put all of the measurements into simplest form. Once students solve the puzzle and get the correct answers that match the answer key, then they will receive the steps to prepare the Peanut Butter Bars/Cups. ** I recommend doing the bars. They are definitely easier to do, especially in a classroom setting, but the cups do look better. They both taste the same though.**

This particular set is built for teaching percentage equivalence. In this set, I've included decimals, percentages and 100s grids for each percentage from 1% to 100% - so there are 100 cards of each - for a grand total of 300 cards on 20 pages. I've thrown in some blank 100s grids which you can laminate and use with a whiteboard marker in your small group instruction! This maze worksheet is great to distribute for classwork, homework, math centers, early finishers, or extra practice. These mazes are designed so the student is able to work out each multiplication fraction problem so they can determine the correct direction to complete the maze. It is also designed for easy grading for the teacher.

TIP: If you are using this maze for math centers, simply laminate and use dry erase markers. You can use Expo Cleaner with a Magic Eraser to clean off. After a while, it will leave residue and you may have to print and laminate another.
