The Physics Behind Tensegrity Structures - STEM Building & Research Activity
By Innovations in Technology
This project lets students learn about the physics and math behind tensegrity structures as they research and create one with their team. After introducing the lesson with a short video (link included in resources), students work with their team to create a basic tensegrity structure following a short tutorial. Then, utilizing the knowledge gained from this, they build a second tensegrity structure of their choice, utilizing the principles and design ideas of tensegrity. As they work through both builds, they record their information on the included Engineering Design Process Planning Sheet with their team. Next, students present their project to the class and explain their design choices. Finally, students reflect on and summarize their learning with short answers to questions about the experience and what they learned.
This lesson was created for 7th and 8th grade, but could also be used successfully in upper elementary grades or high school as well.
Files included (non-editable, .pdf files):
• Teacher & Student Resources
• Student Instructions, Expectations and Grading Rubric
• Team Sign Up Sheet
• Engineering Design Process Planning Sheet
• Reflection Questions

First Grade Math 2D, 3D Shapes and Equal Parts
By Jennifer Connett
This first grade math set focuses on 2d and 3d shapes as well as exploring equal parts and ½ and ¼ fractions of different shapes. There are four different rings used to explore shapes and their attributes. Set 1: On this math ring students will record the number of sides and corners for each shape. Set 2: On this math ring, students will identify the 3D shape in the picture. Set 3: Determine whether each shape is divided into equal parts then circle YES if it is or NO if it is not. If the shape is divided into equal parts, then write the number of parts the shape is divided into. Set 4: On this ring, look at each shape and determine if the shaded area covers ½ or ¼ of the shape. Circle the write answer. These math rings can be laminated so students can use dry erase markers to record their answers directly on the math ring. There are optional recording sheets available of each math ring. Shape Sorting | Sorting 2D Shapes and 3D Shapes
By Jennifer Connett
Students will practice distinguishing between 2D shapes and 3D shapes with this shape sorting math center. This shape sort assesses whether a student can distinguish between 2D and 3D shapes with both basic shape images and with real world shape images.
Students will love this hands on and engaging way to practice seeing the difference between 2D and 3D shapes. This sorting activity makes a great math station, small group activity or hands on assessment for students learning about shapes.
Ways to Use
This sorting math center is an easy to prep activity. Simply print the mats and shapes, cut out the shapes, then place in the desired center for students to complete the activity.
There are two different sorts to assess student knowledge on shapes.
By having two sets of sorts, teachers are able to differentiate this math activity for students based on visual needs. This also provides teachers with more than one sort option when setting up centers or small group activities.
