DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Black & White Copies:

Print Gameboards B&W, 2 crayons, & provide spinner. Partners take turns. Decide who goes first. You are not moving markers around the gameboard, just follow the path and take your turn answering questions. On your turn, spin spinner, if for example you spin 2, answer the first 2 spaces, if answered correctly color in your 2 spaces with your color. (second chances may be determined before the game starts) If answered incorrectly partner may attempt to answer correctly and if they do they will color the space their color. If both players are incorrect, leave space uncolored or continue to take turns until answered correctly (get out the manipulatives to prove your answer). Then the turn goes to the next player, continue in this manner around the gameboard. When you reach to end, each player counts the number of spaces they captured or colored and the one with the most is the winner!

Colored Laminated Copies:

Follow the directions above, but instead of coloring in the spaces with crayons, use colored cubes for each player to leave on their spaces along the path. When finished they can count their cubes to see whose color has the most.

ADAPTIONS

•Use 2 colored bingo daubers for B&W copies.

•Choose a different spinner for your game.

•Use a die or number cube and play the game with a playing piece that you move around the board, if you answer incorrectly you have to stay back on the space you were on, first one to the finish wins. Its just that some of the game boards have fewer spaces so using a six sided die the game might be finished too quickly therefore you may want to use the spinner for smaller numbers.

These clip cards are a great way to test students’ ability to subtract from a given number of objects using a physical multiple choice system. It includes 40 cards covering questions from ‘one less than’ to ‘ten less than’. The given possible answers have been carefully chosen to allow teachers to spot any misconceptions students may have about the topic.

The idea of this activity is that students work out the answer to a given question, then clip a clothespin/ peg or a paperclip to what they think is the correct answer.

This activity works equally well when the cards are laminated. Students simply circle the correct answer using a dry erase marker. Alternatively, you can print these on paper, hand out to your class at the end of the lesson, so they can put their names on and circle the correct answer, serving as a great exit ticket/plenary to the lesson.

Mad Minutes Addition & Subtraction within twenty ~ Use these Mad Minutes worksheets to assess your students. Common Core Standard 1.OA.C.5, 1, OA.C.6

You decide how many minutes to do each assessment. There is a spot to fill in that states, "Complete each equation in_____minutes or less. " You can change the times as students get better at it by making it less time for students to complete.

You will receive the following:

• Addition within twenty ( seven worksheets, sentence style, column style, missing addends) )
• Subtraction within twenty (seven worksheets sentence style, column style, missing minuends or subtrahends)

Suggestions: Spread out your students at different tables throughout your room. I usually sit students behind privacy screens. Pass out the paper and have your students write their names on it. Instruct students not to write anything else. Tell all your students to put their hands on their heads. Set your timer. You can use a visual timer on your smart board or any other type of timer you have. When I first start using Mad Minutes, I start off with 3 minutes for students. You can decrease your time as students get more practice. Tell students to begin working when you start the timer. If students finish before the timer goes off, instruct your students to put their hands on their heads and collect their papers. They must sit quietly until the timer goes off so other students can keep working. Once the timer goes off all the remaining students must put their hands on their hands and you can then collect all the papers.

How to play:

• One student starts the game by reading the 1st card. The student for example asks "Who has 92-18?" • Different ways to play: Play a round with your students while timing them. Play another round and see if students can beat their first time! I used to start or end our math lessons with this game each day when teaching 2 digit subtraction. Each day we would try to beat our previous time!
