Free 1st Grade Phonics Activities (by date, oldest first)

Students will read and sort words based on common vowel pair sounds ea, ai, and oa. Visuals are added as prompts to help the students remember the sounds.

This is a great way to work on first sound fluency and letter sounds!

Whether you are practicing phonological awareness, orthographic mapping, or tapping sounds in words when you read this mat is perfect! For some kids, phonological awareness is hard to hear and they need a concrete method in breaking sounds apart. This helped my students to break words apart when writing or practicing phonological awareness!

Use it for small groups, early finisher activities, or centers! My kids always beg to play this game!

This freebie includes the first set which has the first 13 words on the Zeno word list. I teach the 107 Sight Words because they are the most narrowed-down list of the most commonly used words in texts. It is important your child can read these words quickly and accurately for success in reading!

This cactus themed Color by CVC Word freebie is a preview of our full size Color by CVC Word units. This freebie comes with a "short a" puzzle featuring the words cat, mad, jam, and pan. Students can use the picture clue puzzle or the word clue puzzle. In the picture clue puzzle, students look at the picture of the word and then find the corresponding word to color. In the word clue puzzle, students have the CVC word to look at and find the matching word to color. No prep! Just print and go.

Introduction to Wordle! This is a print and go activity with multiple levels as students develop skills. The playing mats can be reprinted and used again and again as so many different words can be created.

Begin with 3 letter words -

Level 1 - Students can use the alphabet to guess letters in your chosen word. You will mark (red, yellow or green) once students have guessed.

Level 2: Students will use a letter bank (10 letters) to make CVC words. You will again mark the students guesses.

Wordle mats with 4 letter words -

Level 1 - Students can use the alphabet to guess letters in your chosen word. You will mark (red, yellow or green) once students have guessed. (These are great for digraph, or consonant blend practice!)

Level 2: Students will use a letter bank (12 letters) to make 4 letter words. You will again mark the students guesses.

Wordle mats with 5 letter words -

Level 1 - Students can use the alphabet to guess letters in your chosen word. You will mark (red, yellow or green) once students have guessed.

Spring Short Vowel CVC - Word Blending, Segmenting & Building

Spring short vowel mini set - Included is one of each of the activities featuring short a.

Students will write and wipe or use manipulative letters. Students will build letters using flower petals, tap out sounds with Mr. Frog, and slowly talk with Mr. Turtle. Turtle and Frog are ready to be printed and attached to popsicle sticks for hopping / walking along each word. Use them again and again in your small groups or centers.

Turtle Talk

Materials - Picture cards, turtle

Directions - 

We will be talking very slowly like a turtle!  We call this turtle talk.  Look at the picture.  What is it?  Say the word slowly.  Tap out every sound you hear.  Write the letters on the card.  Use your turtle to walk and turtle talk the word you made!   

Flower Building

Use the letters on each flower to build words. Each set has 3 pages to provide appropriate support for your students. You will have one blank page, one with the medial sound written, and one with word families.

These are basic 2 and 3 phoneme Elkonin boxes. I say a word and the students practice saying the sounds in the word while the circles drop down into the box. You could also say the sounds and have the students guess the word. Sometimes we think of what letter makes the sound and write it in the box. Circles drop on click into the box. This isn't an ordinary CVC word list. This list organizes these CVC words into two groups. Words that begin with continuous sounds and words that begin with stop sounds.

You will want to use words with continuous sounds to support beginning and struggling readers.
