Early readers need to read text that is decodable! If your child is working on reading CVC words and high-frequency words these passages are perfect! When they read a decodable reader it gives them confidence in reading stories and it helps them practice the phonics skill they are working on! These decodable passages have two options. One is scaffolded so that they can practice reading the words in isolation that they will see in the text. Tip-you can highlight the CVC words and high-frequency words they read in isolation in the text.

How To Play:

Do your kindergarten and first-grade students write their letters from the bottom up? Help your students (left-handed kids included!) learn correct letter formation with these uppercase and lowercase letter tracing cards. These cards isolate the skill of letter formation so children develop the muscle memory needed to write the alphabet correctly.

It's impossible for teachers to watch over every letter their students are writing and it's easy for them to develop bad habits. These printable cards are Montessori-inspired and self-correcting so your students can be as independent as possible and you don't have to worry that they are starting from the bottom. How we use this in class:

My students now know that we read the passage first together as a group. We decode. We explore. We segment words. Blend them all so we are confident.

Next, we do activities with the sound blends themselves. Using a highlighter, students race to find all the target sound words in the text. I don’t know about you but my student LOVE highlighters! After that, students used the lined window to write all the target sound words so they’re sure they have them all. Then, we do a little exercise where we try to explain what happened in the story in as few words as possible.

The very last step is to draw a picture of what is happening in the text. Students can do most or all this activity pack on their own in the Grade One and Grade Two Immersion setting. It’s a great way to have them build confidence all while giving you the time to work with small groups at the back of your class!

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Texts are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These texts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing reading fluency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Provide your students with the repetition they need to master high-frequency words and develop fluency with these Fry Reading Fluency Practice Drills! Thirty-five drills introduce the first 100 instant words slowly and systematically providing students with ample time to practice, review, and master the most common words until they become everyday sight words!

Parallel these with sixteen fluency drills with repeated phrases to provide students with the practice and repetition they need to become confident and fluent readers!

What’s included in the three Fry Word Fluency PDF files:

• 35 drills in each of three fonts (Calibri, Letters for Learners, and KG Miss Kindergarten)
• Each drill (after the first) repeats two words from the previous drill and introduces three new words for a total of 5 different words per drill!
• Each word appears once per row and once per column!

Note: The last two probes review some of the more tricky words.

• 16 drills in each of three fonts (Calibri, Letters for Learners, and KG Miss Kindergarten)
• Each drill repeats 5 phrases for repetition which leads to fluency!
• 25 total phrases per drill!

How I use these:

• Students read the 25 words or phrases across and down coloring a star at the end of each row and the bottom of each column.
• Number the rows or columns and use as a Roll and Read (six = students choice)!
• Once words/phrases have been practiced, introduce a timer to develop automaticity!
• Send home to read with families or use as a partner read warm up!
