These activity mats (les voyelles) were designed with the K-3 teacher in mind. As you introduce new sounds to your Kindergarten/Grade One students, you can use the image pages for students to show sound recognition and phonemic awareness before they are able to identify letters/graphemes. As students grow in confidence, you can add the element of identifying CV sounds or VC sounds containing the target sound. Each mat has 6 cards that will contain the target sound. Students choose the card they think is the correct one, and attach the card to the mat with Velcro dots. The third and final level is identifying the target sound inside a word. Students will need to decode sounds to correctly determine the 6 matching cards that go on the mat. This resource will grow with your students as their abilities grow.

How to prepare this resource:

Make a copy of each page and laminate the page

Cut out the activity mat (the part on the left side of the page) and the activity cards (12 cards per mat)

Insert all the materials into a plastic bag, zipper pouch, or activity basket and you have a brand new independent work station for your Science of Reading lesson!

DIRECTIONS:

• In the gray boxes at the top of the columns below the arrow links, enter the information you would like to appear at the top of the probe. This could be the lesson and skill, student name and skill, student name and date, etc.
• Enter the items (phrases and sentences) you would like to be randomized on the probe. You can enter up to 20 items. The fewer the items, the more frequently they will be repeated on the probe.
• Select the arrow link to jump to the probe. Click in the empty cell below the arrow and press “Delete” on your keyboard to shuffle the words if needed.
• Once the words are arranged the way you would like them, press CTRL/Command +C on your keyboard or select the print icon.
• Probes should be printed in portrait orientation with normal scale and margins. To print multiple probes, select “Workbook” under “Print” and adjust the selection by unchecking the boxes and pressing the “Apply” button.
• Probes can be used for stations, small group work, shared reading, or as home practice!

What's in the Lesson Plan?

• Dramatic Play involving Goats /g/ and Giant /j/ Troll on a Bridge /j/
• Students learn a poem for the rules behind Hard G and the rules behind Soft G
• As the poem is learned, the dramatic play of the Three Billy Goats Gruff continues with each line as the other students perform arm motions to the rhyme.
• Students interact with the anchor charts to solidify WHEN g says /g/ and WHEN g says /j/
• Students create their own anchor chart to further stick the learning
• The lesson wraps up with an anchor chart for the room for reference to the Hard G and Soft G rule with the characters of Cat and Mice that students won't forget.
• Follow up with a Bump it Game in Center rotations for a few days and finally, an assessment of the skill with a Word Sort with variations for different learning levels.

CVC Cards in 7 different styles for differentiated learning. Let these cards grow with your students! 85 words covering short a, e, i, o, and u. Each word comes in 7 different styles including phonics dots and arrows, phonics dots, word only, and picture only. Almost 600 cards included! Laminate the picture only cards and have students create the CVC word with dry erase markers or letter manipulatives.
