Contents:
This Letter Q Write the Room Activity includes 12 images that begin with the letter Q, such as "quilt" and "queen." Students will find these images spread around the classroom and use one of the four recording sheets to track their discoveries. Two recording sheets are designed with images for early learners, while two feature primary lines for writing practice. The set also includes word walls in two forms—cut-out strips for notebooks or the classroom and a poster with images and their names. A glossary of words provides simple definitions, and a writing prompt encourages students to share their favorite letter Q word.

How the Product is Used:
To begin, teachers print the materials on 8.5x11 sheets in either color or black and white. After cutting out the cards, they hide them around the room for students to find. Medial Short Vowel direct instruction, stations, and Boom cards!

Students will use a variety of activities to reinforce understanding of medial short vowel sounds. When teaching medial sounds I use a roller coaster arm motion providing emphasis of the medial sound at the top of the coaster. To reinforce this, I have made a visual students can use.

Direct Instruction Activity -

• Use the roller coaster and cars to segment words provided on the picture cards. Students will drive the coaster cars, identify the medial sound at the top of the coaster.
• This activity can be done over multiple days - you can focus on one vowel at a time (bring in mirrors so students can see the placement of their tongue when annunciating the short vowel sounds). You can also mix up all 5 short vowel sounds to determine if students are able to identify their sounds.
• Pictures provided have a short vowel focus, with a bonus 20 long vowel pictures.

Stations - Laminate the materials for extended use.

• Clip Cards (30 cards) - use expo markers or clothing pin to select the correct medial sound.
• Sorting (30 pictures) - Sort the pictures to the correct short sound
• 30 cards with pictures and beginning / ending sounds. Students will fill in the medial sound

Short Vowel Tab book - For extra practice, or direct instruction complete a tab book with your students. I have included a different set of pictures.

• B/W and color tab book

Boom cards - 10 sets of cards in all (one location)

Set one: Students select the correct word from a choice of 3 matching the picture.

These activity mats (les voyelles) were designed with the K-3 teacher in mind. As you introduce new sounds to your Kindergarten/Grade One students, you can use the image pages for students to show sound recognition and phonemic awareness before they are able to identify letters/graphemes. As students grow in confidence, you can add the element of identifying CV sounds or VC sounds containing the target sound. Each mat has 6 cards that will contain the target sound. Students choose the card they think is the correct one, and attach the card to the mat with Velcro dots. The third and final level is identifying the target sound inside a word. Students will need to decode sounds to correctly determine the 6 matching cards that go on the mat. This resource will grow with your students as their abilities grow.

How to prepare this resource:

Make a copy of each page and laminate the page

Cut out the activity mat (the part on the left side of the page) and the activity cards (12 cards per mat)

Insert all the materials into a plastic bag, zipper pouch, or activity basket and you have a brand new independent work station for your Science of Reading lesson!

• Enter the items (phrases and sentences) you would like to be randomized on the probe. You can enter up to 20 items. The fewer the items, the more frequently they will be repeated on the probe.
• Select the arrow link to jump to the probe. Click in the empty cell below the arrow and press “Delete” on your keyboard to shuffle the words if needed.
• Once the words are arranged the way you would like them, press CTRL/Command +C on your keyboard or select the print icon.
• Probes should be printed in portrait orientation with normal scale and margins. To print multiple probes, select “Workbook” under “Print” and adjust the selection by unchecking the boxes and pressing the “Apply” button.

Learn and practice reading words with the digraph TH with this activity bundle. This bundle contains 5 different activities that can be used to learn the digraph TH.

Activities Included

1. Self Checking Reading and Blending Cards - Students will read the word on the front of the card then open it up to see if they read the word correctly.

2. Word and Sentence Mats - Students will read the word or sentence and place the correct picture on the mat.

3. Word Wall Cards - There are 20 word wall cards, with the digraph at either the beginning or end of the word. You can cut them apart to create puzzles as well.

4. Digraph Worksheets - This is a set of cut and paste worksheets to practice reading and matching digraphs.

5. Digraph Flower Craftivity - Students will create a flower with words that begin with the digraph.
