Instructions/Tips for Implementation

Use these Decodable Word Pyramids in small groups or one-on-one instruction to help students practice and improve their CVC word fluency and short vowel sounds.

Here you will find a collection of short vowel flashcards. They are color coded for your convenience. You can easily find the short vowel sounds you are working on. Each of the five vowel sounds contain 18 words. You will receive 90 cards in this set. These are great for RTI Instruction or Literacy Center Time as you work in small groups to assist students with reading short vowel sounds. Here you will find a collection of long vowel flashcards. They are color coded for your convenience. You can easily find the long vowel sounds you are working on. This product contains long vowels with silent e at the end and two vowels together combinations. You will receive 96 cards in this set. This Match-Select-Name (M-S-N) Reading and Writing Bundle contains both the reading and writing packs of the Basketball M-S-N unit. These units provide resources for the acquisition and fluency stages of the M-S-N method.

The Match-Select-Name method was presented by L. Oelwein. There has been a significant amount of research done on the efficacy of this method.

It is shown to be beneficial for students with exceptionalities including Down’s Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder who are struggling to learn

to read using phonics.

The resources included in this unit support the acquisition and fluency stages for the 24 words in the set. The sight words in this set are from the Pre-primer and Primer Dolch word lists. Within this bundle there are 6 sets of 4 words with reading books (using both regular and open dyslexic fonts), flash cards, writing sheets and colouring sheets for each word. You will also find a board game using all 24 words.

This Match-Select-Name reading unit is based on a reading intervention method developed by Patricia Oelwein. There has been a significant amount of research done on the efficacy of this method. It is shown to be beneficial for students with exceptionalities including Down’s Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder who are struggling to learn to read using phonics.

There are four stages in the method:

1 - Acquisition (Matching, Selecting, Naming)

2 - Fluency (Practice and Review)

3 - Transfer (Use of new fonts and coloured paper)

4 - Generalization (Ability to read the words in any context/format)

The resources included in this unit cover the acquisition stage for the 24 words in the set and provides resources to support the fluency stage of this method. The level of the words used in the document is predominantly at the Pre-Primer and Primer level of Dolch Sight Words.

2 - 150 page documents included. One set with regular font and one set with open dyslexic font.

On the following pages are flash cards for all of the sight words used in this worksheet.

For ease of use, they are presented in the order of introduction in the worksheet. Laminating the cards would also help make them durable. Punching a hole in each card and keeping them on a ring for each child is also a good way to keep the cards organized and easy to use.

There are many ways to use these cards. Listed below are some games and activities to help children learn to recognize the sight words:

• Sort the cards by sight words with the same beginning letter

• Find sight words that rhyme, and write other words that rhyme with the sight words on a dry erase board or separate sheet of paper.

• Sort the cards to make pairs of sight words that begin with the same letter. Play the “Memory” game using these words—players don’t get to keep the pair unless they can read both words. As an extension of this, also have players use the words in sentences.

• Use a timer to see how quickly each sight word is recognized. Begin with a small number of cards. Add more cards once increased speed and confidence is achieved.

• Put the sight words in alphabetical order.

• Come up with another word that begins with the same sound as each

sight word.
