Task #1 Plot

See if your students can figure out the overall plot for the story using a diagram and plot cards. When put in the right order students get a secret code.

Task #2 Characters

A way for your students to work together figuring out who is who from the novel with character cards and an answer sheet. Once solved students gain a code word.

Task #3 Close Read

Students must close read an excerpt from the novel and acurately answer questions about the excerpt to reveal the last code word.

Task #4 Encrypted Message

Using all the clues from the previous three tasks students must solve the encrypted message to escape the room.

This reading passage examines the short story of a boy dealing with the pressure of living up to his father’s basketball legacy. Throughout this passage, the narrator deals with his unhealthy relationship with basketball and reflects on how it developed during his upbringing. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task, but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. Your students won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying during this activity!

How does it work?

Your students have worked hard throughout the unit following the Steve Harmon trial and today, their knowledge will be tested with an escape room covering the characters, plot, vocabulary, and elements of Monster.

• Guess Who: In the first task, students must match each character from Monster with their description by drawing a line connecting them. Letters not intersected by these lines will form their first code word.
• Criss Cross: In the second task, students must complete a crossword puzzle about major plot points, characters, setting, and quotes from the novel. Circled letters within the crossword, once unscrambled, reveal their second code.
• Legal Lingo: In the third task, students must complete fill-in-the-blank sentences using vocabulary words from the novel. Shaded letters within the answers, once unscrambled, reveal the third code.
• Plot Thickens: In the fourth task, students must answer challenging multiple choice questions about the novel. Letters of the correct answers reveal the fourth code.
• Jig Saw Quote: In the fifth and final task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle that, once assembled correctly, reveals a notable quote from Monster. They must bring this quote to you in order to escape!
