Do your students need highly engaging morning meeting digital resources or a picture of the day to start off their morning? Morning Meeting Picture Slides are important to utilize to develop strong relationships with students and peer-to-peer relationships.  The picture of the day allows for deeper conversations and the building of a strong classroom community, which in turn raises academic achievement skills. The digital resource has many diverse pictures where everyone can feel represented.

How I Use Picture of The Day

We use a picture of the day every morning during our morning meeting routine. The morning meeting slides are projected on our screen for all students to see. Students are asked to infer, visualize, synthesize, and create connections with the picture. Looking closely at a picture is an important reading skill for students to develop to create inferences about what they are reading. 

Additionally, The picture of the day can be used for writing prompts or centers. Students can look at the picture and write a story based on the picture. 

This is also an excellent resource to use with your remote learners. You could assign one or more morning meeting slides to their learning management system for morning meetings and writing or reading activities.

How we use this in class:

My students now know that we read the passage first together as a group. We decode. We explore. We segment words. Blend them all so we are confident.

Next, we do activities with the sound blends themselves. Using a highlighter, students race to find all the target sound words in the text. I don’t know about you but my student LOVE highlighters! After that, students used the lined window to write all the target sound words so they’re sure they have them all. Then, we do a little exercise where we try to explain what happened in the story in as few words as possible.

The very last step is to draw a picture of what is happening in the text. Students can do most or all this activity pack on their own in the Grade One and Grade Two Immersion setting. It’s a great way to have them build confidence all while giving you the time to work with small groups at the back of your class!

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Texts are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These texts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing reading fluency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven passages on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

This Pre-Reading Chalk Talk is a great no-prep activity that you can use to introduce the novel, Alice in Wonderland. This PRINTABLE and DIGITAL lesson is completed in small groups and is more interactive than any Anticipation Guide I’ve ever used! As they complete this Chalk Talk, students will be activating prior knowledge about the deeper issues in the story. IDEAS FOR USING THIS RESOURCE:

• Collaborative Online Pre-Reading Activity: Divide students among six groups and have them rotate through the six pre-reading Chalk Talk questions, reflecting on a different aspect of the text at each station.  They answer the question in their group, then add comments on their classmate's answers in other groups. The best part of this activity is that ALL the students in your classwork SIMULTANEOUSLY on the same file as you supervise!  Only one file to have to open and grade!  

• Collaborative Printed Pre-Reading Activity:  A printable version of the questions is also included so that the Chalk Talk activity can be conducted in the classroom using chart paper. Simply print and cut out the thought-provoking questions and paste them on 6 pieces of chart paper and allow students to travel to each poster in groups and leave answers/comments using post-its and/or markers.

In this product, Reading Street - So You Want to Be President? is read and reviewed. In this product, students will read the text, So You Want to Be President. Students will review/learn facts about different Presidents throughout history, what Presidents enjoy/dislike about their job, why someone wants to become President of the United States, etc. Students will answer comprehension questions using this product. They can complete these questions individually, in a small group, or with support. There are several pages of comprehension questions in this packet that differ from the questions asked in the teacher edition. Selection vocabulary words, their meanings, and an example of them used in a sentence is included in this product. This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that is based on the key figures that helped to abolish slavery and are studied in the 4th grade curriculum. Students will read about Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Samuel Cornish, William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth, John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony and Harriet Beecher Stowe. This activity will have students reading about how each individual aided the abolition movement. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code.

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!

This bundle should accompany Kwame Alexander's novel The Door of No Return. The story is not included in this resource.
