This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that is based on Greek Gods which are part of what that are studied in the 6th grade curriculum within Comparative Classical Civilizations in the Eastern Hemisphere for Ancient Greece. This resource begins by challenging students with a mission, complete the tasks to solve the mystery word and four digit code to have the Greek Gods offer you immortality and a seat in Mount Olympus. Students will read about Zeus, Poseidon, Hermes, Hera, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Hephaestus and Demeter. This activity will have students reading about each Greek God; their symbols, what they were god of, and their importance to Ancient Greek. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code. Once they have completed the scavenger hunt they will receive a half sheet of paper stating that they have received immortality and their seat in Mount Olympus.

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!

How we use this in class:

My students now know that we read the passage first together as a group. We decode. We explore. We segment words. Blend them all so we are confident.

Next, we do activities with the sound blends themselves. Using a highlighter, students race to find all the target sound words in the text. I don’t know about you but my student LOVE highlighters! After that, students used the lined window to write all the target sound words so they’re sure they have them all. Then, we do a little exercise where we try to explain what happened in the story in as few words as possible.

The very last step is to draw a picture of what is happening in the text. Students can do most or all this activity pack on their own in the Grade One and Grade Two Immersion setting. It’s a great way to have them build confidence all while giving you the time to work with small groups at the back of your class!

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Texts are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that is based on European explorers that are studied in the 4th grade curriculum. Students will read about Christopher Columbus, Juan Ponce de León, Jacques Cartier, John Cabot, Henry Hudson, Giovanni da Verrazzano, Hernando de Soto, and Samuel de Champlain. This activity will have students reading about what country the explorer sailed for, what part of the Americas they explored and how their exploration affected later colonization or knowledge of the Americas. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code.

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!

Task #1 Plot

Task #2 Characters

Task #3 Close Read

Students must close read an excerpt from the novel and acurately answer questions about the excerpt to reveal the last code word.

Task #4 Encrypted Message
