• Each student will be assigned one of two POINTS OF VIEW (POV);
  1. French business leaders 2) Vietnamese communists.
• Central to the debate are the following questions; Why should the U.S. care what happens in Vietnam, along with what happens in France? Whether the U.S. should feel threatened by communism in Vietnam? What do they want President Truman to do about the Vietnamese Declaration of Independence— support it, ignore it, oppose it? Whether the U.S. government should support the French?

Extension Activity #2: Song Analysis

• Students will compare two defining songs of the Vietnam era; The Ballads of the Green Berets, & the War Song.

Extension Activity #3: What is a Whistleblower?

• Students will analyze four individuals; all of whom revealed information about activity within a private or public organization that was deemed illegal, immoral, illicit, unsafe or fraudulent.
• Students can delve further by referring to the Whistleblower Timeline,  and choosing a whistleblower to research (1700’s to contemporary times). Students will prepare a 3 to 5 minute class presentation.

This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. In this product, students will learn about World War 1, common names used for this war, how this war was started, when it started, who was involved in it - Allies, Central Powers, who remained neutral during the war, and when America joined in on the war, which side they were on, and why they joined the war, why Americans didn't want to get involved in World War 1 in the beginning, the ocean liner - Lusitania and how that influenced America to join the war, Woodrow Wilson and his part in the war, what Allies means, trenches that were built in the battlefield and why, how long soldiers stayed in them and why, who surrendered at the end of World War 1, when the war ended, how many soldiers died during the war, the treaty that signed at the end of the war and who signed it, how countries changed after the war, the jobs that women had after World War 1, when women could vote - the 19th Amendment, the order in which the first 15 states gave women the right to vote, the 3 states that ratified the 19th Amendment, African Americans after World War 1 and how this was the beginning of the civil rights movement, where African Americans moved after World War 1, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment and how they were important in the United States.

The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. Throughout the product, after each page of notes is reviewed, students will answer comprehension questions to review what was discussed on previous pages. At the end of the product, students are provided with a review that includes multiple choice questions and short answer questions.
