The Significance of Act 3, Scene 1 in Hamlet - PowerPoint

This is a 14-slide PowerPoint presentation which includes a video extract from the RSC of the famous soliloquy being performed.

It considers the main themes of the Scene but also includes some questions for students to think about and/or discuss, as well as a more detailed analysis of how a particular question might be approached.

The presentation focuses on Act 3, Scene 1 of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It begins by setting the scene and introducing the characters, providing context for the themes discussed later. The main themes explored are appearance vs. reality and madness.
Setting the Scene: The scene takes place in the castle of Elsinore, where the characters are gathered to watch a play. The atmosphere is tense due to Hamlet’s erratic behavior.
Introduction of Characters: Key characters include Hamlet, Ophelia, Polonius, and the Players. Each character’s role and significance in the play are discussed.
Appearance vs. Reality: This theme is explored through Hamlet’s soliloquy and the Players’ performance. Hamlet’s soliloquy reveals his distrust of appearances and his desire for truth, while the Players’ performance highlights how appearances can be deceiving.
Madness: The theme of madness is closely linked to appearance vs. reality. The characters’ behavior and dialogue are analyzed to uncover the extent of their mental breakdown.

Each slide contains information and graphics that highlight how women experienced the war or contributed during this period. During this time of relatively rigid gender roles, some women moved across the boundaries of the private sphere into the public sphere during the Civil War.

Summary:

Marlowe, the second child and eldest son of John Marlowe, a Canterbury shoemaker, was probably born early in 1564—the date of his baptism is recorded as Feb. 26, 1564. He attended King’s School at Canterbury for two years (1579–81) before going on to Cambridge University, from which he graduated in 1584. His productive period as a playwright was only about ten years—he was killed on May 30, 1593, in Deptford in a quarrel over a tavern bill. In addition to writing, Marlowe also served in government—at least briefly. He seemingly worked as a spy for the queen’s secret service. He was occasionally involved with the police for various infractions, and he was considered quite unorthodox in his religious views.

Each step of the RACE writing strategy is discussed in-depth, with easy-to-follow and color-coordinated components. Each slide contains a checklist for you to display while teaching this writing process!

The last four slides consists of a graphic organizer (still color-coordinated!) to help you put all of the steps together at the end! The first two of those slides use an example question and response, separated into each step, along with all of the steps put together into one well-constructed response. The last two slides are CUSTOMIZABLE for you to add your own question and response!

Today In History - Daily Warm Up - February

Today in History Daily Warm-Up Instructions:

Image Observation:

Display a historical image related to the day's date or a significant event in history.

Instruct students to carefully observe the details in the image without providing any background information.

Individual Inference:

Ask students to individually jot down their inferences about what they think might be happening in the image.

Encourage them to consider details such as clothing, setting, facial expressions, and any other relevant visual cues.

Partner Discussion:

Pair up students and have them share their individual inferences with their partners.

Prompt partners to discuss and compare their interpretations, encouraging them to consider different perspectives.

Collaborative Inference:

Bring the class back together and facilitate a collaborative discussion.

Select a few pairs to share their inferences with the entire class.

Encourage students to consider diverse interpretations and discuss any common themes or differences in their observations.

Historical Context:

After the collaborative discussion, provide some historical context or information about the image.

Discuss how the actual events align or differ from the students' inferences.
