Power Point Lesson

This 22-slide PowerPoint presentation covers women's experiences in Colonial America between 1607 and 1763. It is an ideal lesson for the colonial period or as a stand-alone resource for women’s history. It is also a good resource during Women’s History Month.

Each slide contains primary sources and images that highlight the varied experiences of women in colonial America. Some specific women are highlighted through primary source excerpts and images. Reading Assignment and Worksheet

This five-page Reading Assignment and Worksheet provides an overview of the various activities, attributes and activities of women in Colonial America between 1607 and 1763 which was the start of the French and Indian War.

Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.

Analyzing Primary Sources

This 21-page Primary Source Analysis activity gives students a chance to delve deeper into life of colonial women prior to the French and Indian War which began in 1763. They will be able to determine what issues were important to women and how they contributed to society. Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. Primary sources include pamphlet excerpts, photographs and posters. Each page of primary sources includes questions. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source. There are also two DBQ questions. An Answer Key to all the questions and the HAPPY process is available at the end of the packet. This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and AP students, but all students will find these resources engaging.

Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. Teachers can assign just a few sources to analyze or the entire packet. Student time will vary. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.

Through the critical analysis of primary sources, this unique lesson will have students explore how Native American residential schools in the United States served as sites of both cultural loss and cultural persistence.

Using primary sources, the gallery walk begins in the early beginnings of the residential school experience with the first school opening its’ doors at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and then carries on to present-day issues. This resource will bring the photographs to life as students will be provided with additional background information that will come in the form of first hand accounts and testimonies of the people who experienced the residential schools. This 27 page Primary Source Analysis and DBQ activity gives students a chance to delve deeper into the experience of women who joined the military in the United States during World War II. There are 20 primary sources and 2 DBQ prompts. After completing this resource, students will be able to determine what issues were important to society during this era and how women contributed to society. In addition, there are Document-Based Question prompts.

A Lesson Plan and other supplemental information is provided at the beginning of the resource. Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers, college students or independent learners who want to learn more. Teachers can assign just a few sources to analyze or the entire packet. Student work time will vary dependent on the aforementioned factors.

Also included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. Power Point Presentation

This 12 slide presentation about women in the United States military in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II. The slides use engaging visuals including photographs and posters to convey the experiences on the home front. These visuals are primary sources that the instructor can use to further student understanding beyond textbook reading. This slide presentation is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. Students will become familiar with 11 maps and 4 map projections. This is an interactive notebook activity that students can use throughout the year to refer to. It is suggested that students complete 3-4 per class period.

This is more than simply reading the maps, but asking questions that will have students become familiar with and be able to recognize and make connections. This lesson asks connection questions such as: What does the word "plat" mean? What do you think this is called a plat map? What does this map use to communicate information? Why would this map be referred to as a locator map?

If you wish, you could modify this lesson to be a carousel activity instead of an interactive notebook activity, placing the maps around the room and having students move from one station to the next. Modify to meet your students needs.

Not only are these geography warm-up activity bell ringers for the beginning of class great transitions to start class and get students mentally ready for class, but it's also a great way to work in time for state test prep activities without all the extra work**.** Many of the social studies test questions require students to read, examine, and analyze maps, charts, graphs, etc. I have used bell ringers for years and I have seen an increase in students' abilities to read maps, graphs, and charts. It's worth your time and theirs!

This second set of bell ringers asks students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more. Although they are specified for the first six weeks, they can be used at any time throughout the year. The atlas used for reference is the Rand McNally 6th Edition found on Amazon for $15 found here. But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. The questions can remain the same.

Many educators struggle with the task of figuring out how to start class each day or how to transition from concept to concept. Due to thenature of switching class to class, students often struggle to mentally prepare to transition to a different subject. Not only are these geography warm-up activity bell ringers for the beginning of class great transitions to start class and get students mentally ready for class, but it's also a great way to work in time for state test prep activities without all the extra work**.** Many of the social studies test questions require students to read, examine, and analyze maps, charts, graphs, etc. I have used bell ringers for years and I have seen an increase in students' abilities to read maps, graphs, and charts. It's worth your time and theirs!

This fifth set of bell ringers asks students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more. Although they are specified for the first six weeks, they can be used at any time throughout the year. The atlas used for reference is the Rand McNally 6th Edition found on Amazon for $15 found here. But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. The questions can remain the same.

Many educators struggle with the task of figuring out how to start class each day or how to transition from concept to concept. Due to the nature of switching class to class, students often struggle to mentally prepare to transition to a different subject. A popular solution to these problems is the idea of the beginning of the class warm-up bellringers. These start-of-class activities benefit both students and teachers.

A bell ringer, often referred to as a warm-up activity or a do-now, is a short exercise or prompt given to students at the beginning of class. These activities are designed to capture students' attention, activate prior knowledge, and set the tone for the rest of the lesson.

Why do maps change? How do boundaries change?

There are may political, economic, and social factors that reshape our world and our maps. Students will participate in the introductory PowerPoint presentation and will visit historical events that have shaped our world and today's maps. This is a great lesson to incorporate into your maps unit. It goes beyond the basics and broadens the students' scope of understanding.

Will Need a Zip File Reader to Open Zip File

OBJECTIVE:

• The learner will understand factors which shaped our maps, such as colonization, decolonization, war, and regions claiming and gaining independence, etc.
• The learner will explore historical events that shaped today’s map.
• The learner will identify social, historical, and economic factors that reshape maps.

MATERIALS:

• Make multiple copies of each “Events that Shaped Our World” activity sheets.
• Access to the Internet for research purposes.
• Powerpoint Identifying social, historical and economic factors that shaped our maps
  This & That Introductory Game
• Maps or atlases for student to use a references. If you don’t have these, find a map with political boundaries for each country and state of United States or each team.
• Colored pencils for student can draw the before and after maps on their activity sheet.
• Numbers to display on the wall for the Gallery Walk.
• Pad of sticky notes for each group.
