This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. Not only are these geography warm-up activity bell ringers for the beginning of class great transitions to start class and get students mentally ready for class, but it's also a great way to work in time for state test prep activities without all the extra work**.** Many of the social studies test questions require students to read, examine, and analyze maps, charts, graphs, etc. I have used bell ringers for years and I have seen an increase in students' abilities to read maps, graphs, and charts. It's worth your time and theirs!

This fourth set of bell ringers asks students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more. Although they are specified for the first six weeks, they can be used at any time throughout the year. The atlas used for reference is the Rand McNally 6th Edition found on Amazon for $15 found here. But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. The questions can remain the same.

The Chernobyl explosion in Ukraine was one of the worst disasters in history. At the time Ukraine was under the Soviet Union's (U.S.S.R's) control. An enormous nuclear power plant was built in Ukraine. But something went wrong and reactor number four exploded sending poisonous radiation into the atmosphere causing destruction and danger to the people and environment. The U.S.S.R. did its best to cover up the disaster from the rest of the world by shutting down all communications, but it didn't take long for the world to find out! The nuclear disaster will affect our earth for centuries.

This lesson includes a detailed introductory PowerPoint, a song analysis, and many more activities surrounding the Chernobyl disaster. Your students will be engaged!

OBJECTIVES:

(1) Describe the events surrounding the Chernobyl disaster.
(2) The learner will identify the location of renewable and nonrenewable natural
resources.

plant accident.

A photo gallery walk is a fun and engaging way to get your student actively involved in the learning process. Students will work together in teams or cooperative groups and will travel through 12 picture galleries learning about the different world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism among other religions. This is a great activity for an introductory lesson or for a reinforcement activity!

Covers the traditions and practices of the world’s most influential religions of the world: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islamism, Taoism, Animism, Shintoism, Monotheism, Polytheism & non-religions: Atheism, Agnosticism. The lesson teaches the difference between polytheistic and monotheistic religions.

OBJECTIVE:

• The learner will become familiar with world religions’ cultural hearth, beliefs, and practices.
• The learner will recognize and understand key terms of each world religion.
• The learner will examine the beliefs, traditions, and customs of the major religions of the world.
• The learner will determine the similarities and differences between each world religion.

MATERIALS:

• Copies of each gallery, laminated for future use and durability. (Place these around the room or in the hall if more room is needed)
• Use adhesive to adhere all 12 gallery sheets to the wall, spread out as if you were in a gallery.
• Post-it notes for each group
• A clipboard or a piece of paper for each group to place their sticky notes on as they move around the room.

INCLUDES:

• Chart to display
• 12 Galleries with images and explanations
• Introduction guiding questions and suggested videos
  (Suggested videos are simply suggestions, it will be up to the instructor to select a video if they choose to use one.)
• Procedure activity along with the gallery walk

IMPORTANT NOTE:
World religions can be a sensitive topic. When presenting the religions and discussing them do not show any bias’ toward one religion. Remain neutral so as not to lean to accept one religion over the other. This is a factual lesson that helps students understand culture throughout the world as many cultural practices are relative to a specific religion within the region. You may have some parents who prefer their child to not be taught this within the classroom setting. If your district has a policy where parents can request their child not attend class during a sensitive topic, then send out a letter to all parents communicating that your class is starting a unit on world religions and have them sign it to opt-out or opt-in. Follow your district’s guidelines.

This geography and science lesson is intriguing and engaging! The construction of the Three Gorges Dam in China, the largest hydropower project in the world — that took 18 years to build and over 40,000 workers,—has sparked numerous controversies and debates regarding its impact on the environment.

One of the most intriguing claims is that the immense weight of the dam's reservoir has caused the rotation of the Earth to slow down. Some scientists argue that the shift in mass could potentially affect the Earth's rotation, while other scientists neglect the belief. The Earth's rotation is influenced by a multitude of factors, including natural processes such as earthquakes and the melting of polar ice caps, making it unlikely that the Three Gorges Dam alone could significantly slow down the planet. Students will work together to complete the Doodle Notes that go along with the PowerPoint presentation. Students will hypothesis whether the Three Gorges Dam has slowed the earth.

Note: This lesson supports the idea that the dam has slowed the earth's rotation and provides the scientific backing for it. Please feel free to modify this lesson to support one or the other side.
