This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. Why do maps change? How do boundaries change?

There are may political, economic, and social factors that reshape our world and our maps. Students will participate in the introductory PowerPoint presentation and will visit historical events that have shaped our world and today's maps. This is a great lesson to incorporate into your maps unit. It goes beyond the basics and broadens the students' scope of understanding.

• The learner will understand factors which shaped our maps, such as colonization, decolonization, war, and regions claiming and gaining independence, etc.
• The learner will explore historical events that shaped today’s map.
• The learner will identify social, historical, and economic factors that reshape maps.

• Make multiple copies of each “Events that Shaped Our World” activity sheets.
• Access to the Internet for research purposes.
• Powerpoint Identifying social, historical and economic factors that shaped our maps

• Maps or atlases for student to use a references. If you don’t have these, find a map with political boundaries for each country and state of United States or each team.
• Colored pencils for student can draw the before and after maps on their activity sheet.

Not only are these geography warm-up activity bell ringers for the beginning of class great transitions to start class and get students mentally ready for class, but it's also a great way to work in time for state test prep activities without all the extra work**.** Many of the social studies test questions require students to read, examine, and analyze maps, charts, graphs, etc. I have used bell ringers for years and I have seen an increase in students' abilities to read maps, graphs, and charts. It's worth your time and theirs!

This fourth set of bell ringers asks students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more. Although they are specified for the first six weeks, they can be used at any time throughout the year. The atlas used for reference is the Rand McNally 6th Edition found on Amazon for $15 found here. But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. The questions can remain the same.

The Chernobyl explosion in Ukraine was one of the worst disasters in history. At the time Ukraine was under the Soviet Union's (U.S.S.R's) control. An enormous nuclear power plant was built in Ukraine. But something went wrong and reactor number four exploded sending poisonous radiation into the atmosphere causing destruction and danger to the people and environment. The U.S.S.R. did its best to cover up the disaster from the rest of the world by shutting down all communications, but it didn't take long for the world to find out! The nuclear disaster will affect our earth for centuries.

This lesson includes a detailed introductory PowerPoint, a song analysis, and many more activities surrounding the Chernobyl disaster. Your students will be engaged!

OBJECTIVES:

(1) Describe the events surrounding the Chernobyl disaster.
(2) The learner will identify the location of renewable and nonrenewable natural
resources.
(3) The learner will decipher the habitat and life impacts of the nuclear power
plant accident.
(4) The learner will empathize with the people affected by the disaster.
(5) The learner will explain the drawbacks of nuclear-generated electricity.

A photo gallery walk is a fun and engaging way to get your student actively involved in the learning process. Students will work together in teams or cooperative groups and will travel through 12 picture galleries learning about the different world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism among other religions. This is a great activity for an introductory lesson or for a reinforcement activity!

Covers the traditions and practices of the world’s most influential religions of the world: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islamism, Taoism, Animism, Shintoism, Monotheism, Polytheism & non-religions: Atheism, Agnosticism. The lesson teaches the difference between polytheistic and monotheistic religions.

OBJECTIVE:

• The learner will become familiar with world religions’ cultural hearth, beliefs, and practices.
• The learner will recognize and understand key terms of each world religion.
• The learner will examine the beliefs, traditions, and customs of the major religions of the world.
• The learner will determine the similarities and differences between each world religion.

MATERIALS:

• Copies of each gallery, laminated for future use and durability. (Place these around the room or in the hall if more room is needed)
• Use adhesive to adhere all 12 gallery sheets to the wall, spread out as if you were in a gallery.
• Post-it notes for each group
• A clipboard or a piece of paper for each group to place their sticky notes on as they move around the room.

INCLUDES:

• Introduction guiding questions and suggested videos
  (Suggested videos are simply suggestions, it will be up to the instructor to select a video if they choose to use one.)

IMPORTANT NOTE:
World religions can be a sensitive topic. When presenting the religions and discussing them do not show any bias’ toward one religion. Remain neutral so as not to lean to accept one religion over the other. This is a factual lesson that helps students understand culture throughout the world as many cultural practices are relative to a specific religion within the region. You may have some parents who prefer their child to not be taught this within the classroom setting. If your district has a policy where parents can request their child not attend class during a sensitive topic, then send out a letter to all parents communicating that your class is starting a unit on world religions and have them sign it to opt-out or opt-in. Follow your district’s guidelines.
