U.S. Women's History Curriculum Unit - Part 1 (1600-1920) * U.S. History * APUSH

The U.S. Women’s History Curriculum- Part 1 (1600-1920) contains Reading Assignments and Worksheets, Primary Source Analysis and DBQ’s and Power Point Lessons covering seven different eras.
This curriculum unit covers women’s experiences, contributions and perspectives from the pre-Columbian Native American era through the turn of the century, but also including the culmination of the Women's Suffrage Movement with the passage of the 19th Amendment.
The U.S. Women’s History Curriculum – Part 1 is an ever-evolving curriculum unit that includes not just the listed resources but any other resources that will be added in the future.
This curriculum unit can stand alone as its own course or can serve to supplement your United States History curriculum or AP United States History curriculum. These materials provide a more nuanced and complex look at how women participated in American society than is usually given in standard textbooks.
For 8th Grade through 12th Grade students, the Reading Assignments and Worksheets are excellent summaries of women’s experiences that are completed individually or as group exercises. Reading assignments are usually 2-3 pages with 1-2 page worksheets.
For APUSH students, the Primary Source Analysis and DBQ’s are excellent opportunities for students to delve deeper into questions relating to developments, changing attitudes and policies relating to women during critical times in U.S. History. These resources usually include anywhere from 9 to 25 primary sources which vary from excerpts from books, letters, diaries, journals, newspaper articles, lectures and more, photographs, drawings, paintings, graphs, charts, maps and more. They provide excellent practice in identifying change/continuity over time (CCOT), cause/effect and in assessing significance of events.
Teachers can deliver the Power Point Lessons live or can record them for online viewing by their students. Power Point Lessons are usually 12-20 slides.

Figurative Language Short Passage Sets are a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! These figurative language passage sets are rigorous, use higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!
Four Corners Figurative Language Activity is a fun whole-group game or review activity. In this product, students will learn the sign and English vocabulary word for the 40 pre-primer sight words, 52 primer sight words presented, 41 first-grade sight words presented, 46 second-grade sight words, and 41 third-grade sight words presented.
This product can be used with students who are learning English and/or sign language. It can serve as an in class practice, review, or quiz.
In the first section of each sight words product, students will learn the English word, the sign of each sight word, and the sight word is used in a sentence. Students will be able to write the name of each sight word in their native language. A picture is also included to represent each sight word. At the end of each sight words section, students will have the opportunity to choose 11 sight words and make up a sentence using each one.
In the second section of each product, there is a dictionary provided that includes the English word, the sign, and a picture showing each sight word.
In the third section of each product, students can review what they learned based on the sign, sentence, and picture that are included for each sight word provided. Students will then be required to write the vocabulary word in English.
In the fourth section of each product, students can review what they learned based on the sign and picture that are included for each word provided. Students will then be required to write each sight word in their native language on each line and make up a sentence using the sight words presented.

The ghost of Edgar Allan Poe has risen from the grave to have his revenge on your students who he feels, spend too much time on their smartphones and not enough time studying him. He has trapped them in the room until they can show that they do in fact "know Poe!"
- Poe FAQs: In the first task, students must complete a crossword puzzle with questions about Poe. Once complete, they must unscramble circled boxes to reveal the first code.
- Death Mystery: In the second task, students must find all 21 theories of how Poe died in a word search. Remaining letters will form the second code.
- Extra! Extra! Read All About it!: In the third task, students must match fictional newspaper headlines with the short story by Poe that they represent. This task is in the form of a mat puzzle and the code is revealed when students have matched all short stories correctly.
- Annabel Lee: In the fourth task, students must perform a close reading of one of Poe's most famous poems, Annabel Lee. The letters of the multiple choice questions about the poem will form the fourth code.
- Jig Saw Quote: In the fifth task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle with a quote from one of Poe's stories.
Jane Austen Escape Room:
The ghost of Jane Austen has risen from the grave with a dire warning. She is upset because she believes that people have become too concerned with money and looks and have forgotten the true meaning of love. She will not allow anyone to exit the room until everyone learns more about her, her novels, and the lessons she desires to instill upon us all.
- Austen FAQs: In the first task, students must complete a crossword puzzle with questions about Jane Austen's life. Once complete, they must unscramble circled boxes to reveal the first code.
- Inspired by Jane: Due to her sharp social commentary and the timelessness of her writing, Jane Austen’s works have been adapted and reimagined into countless novels, films, and television shows. Complete the word search of just 19 of these adaptations. Remaining letters form the second code.
- Extra! Extra! Read All About it!: In the third task, students must match fictional newspaper headlines with the novel by Austen that they represent. This task is in the form of a mat puzzle and the code is revealed when students have matched all short stories correctly.
- Austen's 7 Heroines: In the fourth task, students will match each of Austen's renowned female protagonists in the left column with her description on the right. Letters not intersected by the lines for the fourth code.
- Jig Saw Quote: In the final task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle with a notable Jane Austen quote.
Ray Bradbury Escape Room:
The ghost of Ray Bradbury has risen from the grave with a dire warning. He is upset because he believes that students spend too much time on their smartphones and not enough time preventing the future collapse of society! He has trapped them in the room until they can show that they do in fact care about the future of humankind.
- Bradbury FAQs: In the first task, students must complete a crossword puzzle with questions about Ray Bradbury. Once complete, they must unscramble circled boxes to reveal the first code.
- Write Every Day: Did you know that Ray Bradbury wrote every single day since he was 12 years old? In the second task, students must find 25 titles of short stories, novels, and screenplays that Bradbury wrote in a word search. Remaining letters will form the second code.
- Extra! Extra! Read All About it!: In the third task, students must match fictional newspaper headlines with the short story by Bradbury that they represent. This task is in the form of a mat puzzle and the code is revealed when students have matched all short stories correctly.
- If Only We Had Taller Been: In the fourth task, students must perform a close reading of one of Bradbury's most famous poems, If Only We Had Taller Been. He read this poem in 1971 the day before the Space Probe Mariner 9 landed on Mars. The letters of the multiple choice questions about the poem form the fourth code. *Please note that the text of the poem cannot be included in this resource due to copyright restrictions.*
- Jig Saw Quote: In the fifth and final task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle with a notable Ray Bradbury quote.
William Shakespeare ESCAPE ROOM:
In order to escape from Elizabethan England and return to the present day, your students must escape your classroom by solving 6 different puzzles, discovering a hidden message, and finding clues along the way.
- Shakespeare FAQs: In the first task, students must complete a crossword puzzle with questions about Shakespeare. Once complete, they must unscramble circled boxes to reveal the first code.
- The Globe: In the second task, students must correctly identify components of the Globe Theater. Shaded boxes within the correct answers will reveal the second code.
- Name That Play: In the third task, students must match fictional newspaper headlines with the Shakespearean play they represent. This task is in the form of a mat puzzle and the code is revealed when students have matched all plays correctly.
- My Mistress' Eyes: In the fourth task, students must analyze one of Shakespeare’s most famous sonnets, My Mistress’ Eyes are Nothing like the Sun. The letters of the multiple choice questions about the sonnet will form the fourth code.
- Jig Saw Quote: In the fifth task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle with a quote from one of Shakespeare’s plays.
- Putting it all Together: The final task brings the first 5 tasks together. Students will learn that each of the codes represent an aspect of one of Shakespeare’s plays. The name of the play is the key to escape Elizabethan England and return to the present day!

In yoga, the Yamas & Niyamas are a moral code of conduct, a guideline for how to live. Together, the Yamas & Niyamas help us to make careful decisions about how to think, speak, and behave. This foundational thinking prepares children to form healthy relationships with themselves and others.
This bundle includes two (2) lesson units:
- Yamas & Niyamas Teen Unit is 47-page PDF download directed at teenagers
- Yamas & Niyamas Kid Unit is a 48-page PDF download directed at kids ages 7-11
Both units are a PDF download which you can view on your phone, tablet, computer or print out onto paper.
This bundle contains twenty (20) lesson plans that can be used as a yoga class series, or easily incorporated into the school classroom. Adults can facilitate conversations, games, activities, and yoga experiences that give children concrete information about each of the Yamas & Niyamas.
Each lesson plan breaks down one of the Yamas or Niyamas and includes; introduction to that specific core value, a discussion guide, small group work or activity, breathing exercises and yoga poses to challenge and engage children.

History will come to life for students when they read primary sources! This teaching bundle will fascinate and engage your students. Primary sources puts the "story" back into history.
Each Primary Source Analysis and DBQ resource gives students a chance to delve deeper into life of women during the Colonial Era (1607-1763), the Revolutionary Era (1763-1783), the Early Women's Rights Movement (1840-1865), the Civil War (1861-1865), the Industrial Revolution (1865-1920), and the Women's Rights Movement (1865-1920) Through reading, review and analysis of sources, students will be able to determine what issues and challenges faced women during each era and how they contributed to society.

Along with primary sources, there are Document-Based Questions (DBQs). Additionally, each resource includes a one-page sheet for students that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. Examples of primary sources include cartoons, diary and journal excerpts, indenture contracts, political cartoons, letters, and more. Each page of primary sources includes questions. Each resource includes two DBQ prompts which help students to weigh and evaluate the significance of women's actions, thoughts and contributions during the era.
A page near the end of each resource allows students to apply the HAPPY process to one source. An Answer Key to all the questions and the DBQs and the HAPPY process is available at the end of the packet.
This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and AP students, but all students will find these resources engaging.
Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers, college students or independent learners who want to learn more. Teachers can assign just a few sources to analyze or the entire packet. Student time will vary. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key. Each resource can take up to 2-3 class periods depending on whether they complete the entire packet or just complete portions of it.

Consider having your students read Hearts of War, a novel about a Nisei soldier who served in the Military Intelligence Service and a woman who served in the Women Army Corps.
