Exploring the Main Themes of Hamlet - PowerPoint

By Mark Barrett

This is a 40-slide PowerPoint presentation which would be great as a starting point with a class about to embark on a study of Hamlet OR as a revision-aid once they have studied the play.

It includes questions and discussion points as well as a review quiz at the end.

The PowerPoint is constructed as follows:

  • Firstly, it provides an overview of the play, discussing Hamlet’s quest to avenge his father’s murder while grappling with indecision, madness, and moral dilemmas.
  • The historical context is explored, highlighting the political instability and religious conflict in early 17th century England, which is reflected in the play’s portrayal of a corrupt and troubled court. The theme of revenge is examined through Hamlet’s procrastination and the contrasting decisiveness of characters like Laertes and Fortinbras.
  • Madness is discussed as a reflection of political instability and corruption, with debates on whether Hamlet is truly mad. The theme of corruption and decay is analyzed through political corruption, physical decay imagery, and moral corruption.
  • The theme of appearance vs. reality is explored through deception, manipulation, and the play-within-a-play device. The theme of action and inaction is examined through Hamlet’s hesitation, moral qualms, and philosophical musings.
  • The presentation also includes discussion points and analysis, potential examination questions, and a revision quiz. It concludes with reflections on the enduring relevance of “Hamlet” and its exploration of human nature, complex characters, and themes of power, politics, and deception.

Introduction to William Shakespeare | Handouts and Worksheets on Shakespeare, the Globe Theater, and More | The ULTIMATE Pre-Reading Bundle for ANY Play!

By Rigorous Resources for High School English

Teaching a play by William Shakespeare? Want to provide students with a fascinating overview of the author's life, the construction of the Globe Theater, the language of early-modern English, the rhythm of iambic pentameter, and more? This 50-page EDITABLE resource has EVERYTHING you could possibly want to introduce ANY play by William Shakespeare....

This comprehensive bundle includes a Biography of the Bard, an account of the construction of the Globe Theater, handouts and exercises to help students understand Shakespeare's language, a Shakespearean insult generator, worksheets and quizzes introducing students to iambic pentameter, and more.

Here's what you'll find inside this 50-page resource bundle:

William Shakespeare Biography: This 4-page biography of William Shakespeare explains the conditions of his early life and schooling in Stratford-upon-Avon, how he became involved in the London theater scene, the impact which the death of his son Hamnet had upon his writing career, his gradual transition from comedies to tragedies, and more. Includes a comprehension check with answer key. (5 pages)

The Globe Theater: A 2-page handout on what inspired Shakespeare's acting company to build the Globe Theater. A dispute with the landlord of their old theater motivated Shakespeare's company to meet with lanterns in the middle of the night, disassemble their old playhouse, and transport the timber across the Thames River to the plot of land where they would build the Globe. How did the construction of the Globe infuse new life into Shakespeare's company? How would Shakespeare make reference to the Globe in plays written after its construction in 1599? Includes a comprehension check with answer key. (4 pages)

Shakespeare's Language: A 3-page handout on the crucial topic of Shakespeare's language. Literary scholars have pointed out that "the life of Shakespeare's plays is in the language." What's so special about Shakespeare's language? Did he really invent 1,700 new words? What kinds of words did he invent, and how do they contribute to the meaning of his plays? Includes a comprehension check with answer key. (5 pages)

Renaissance Glossary: This 2-page glossary features 50 words that appear frequently within Shakespeare's plays but are no longer used in modern-day speech: adieu, beseech, ere, fain, naught, prithee, troth, wot, etc. Familiarizing students with this words will make their reading experience much smoother! This glossary includes a definition for each word as well as an example of how it's used in Shakespeare's plays. (2 pages)

Translation Practice: This 2-page worksheet features 20 brief quotations from a diverse range of Shakespeare's plays. Challenge students to translate each quotation into modern English. This exercise gives students a change to demonstrate their understanding of the words in the Renaissance Glossary. Includes answer key. (4 pages)

Decode the Idiom: This 1-page worksheet features 12 quotations that feature idioms which Shakespeare invented: wear my heart on my sleeve, all that glitters is not gold, I have a charmed life, as good luck would have it, and more. Challenge students to identify the idiom by filling in the word missing from the quotation. Then have students explain the meaning of the idiom. Includes answer key. (2 pages)

Blank Verse: A 2-page handout on the when and why Shakespeare employs blank verse (i.e. unrhymed iambic pentameter). This handout explains how blank verse emerged as a popular verse form as well as what distinguished Shakespeare's usage of blank verse. When and why do some of Shakespeare's characters break with the regular rhythms of blank verse? Why might some characters alternate between using verse and prose? (2 pages)

Scansion Practice: Students learn to identify iambic pentameter by scanning 10 well-known quotations from Shakespeare's plays. Includes answer key. (4 pages)

Quizzes on Meter (x2): The 2 quizzes on meter are designed to asses whether students are able to accurately scan Shakespearean lines. Each quiz features 10 quotations from Shakespeare's plays. Includes answer keys. (8 pages)

Shakespearean Insult Generator: Shakespeare's characters are exceptionally creative in their elaboration of insults. Indeed, some scholars have suggested that the insults in Shakespeare's plays amount to their own education in wit. If your students are sufficiently mature, you could use this exercise to invite them to generate their own original Shakespearean insults. (2 pages)

The resource will download as a Zip folder which contains the entire 50-page unit in two separate formats: Word Doc *and* PDF. Because the Word Doc is fully EDITABLE, you'll be able to customize it to match your teaching style and/or the skill levels of your students — year after year! If you don't have Microsoft Word, you'll still be able to access a PDF version of the full unit — which is easy to navigate and quick to print!

If you have questions about ANYTHING related to Shakespeare, please don't hesitate to get in touch! This unit was designed by a Ph.D. in English who has devoted over 20 years to studying Shakespeare — and who currently teaches a course called "Shakespeare's Masterpieces." I LOVE hearing from fellow teachers who share a passion for great literature. Wishing you an amazing experience with the Swan of Avon!

Happy teaching!

Ethical Choices at Work: High School Career Readiness Decision Making Activities

By More Lessons Less Planning

Prepare your high school students for the real world with this in-depth "Ethical Choices at Work" workbook! Designed to foster critical thinking and self-reflection, this resource covers 10 key workplace dilemmas that students might face in their future careers. From dealing with "borrowed" supplies and plagiarism to clocking in early and managing work-life balance, this workbook encourages students to explore the consequences of ethical decision-making in a professional environment.

What’s Inside:

  • 10 Realistic Workplace Scenarios: Each section presents a detailed situation students could encounter at work, such as deciding when borrowing becomes stealing or whether to exaggerate a customer complaint.
  • Diverse Activities: Reflection questions, group discussions, case studies, role-playing exercises, and pros/cons lists engage students in active learning.
  • Final Comprehensive Activity: Students apply all their knowledge in a culminating exercise that challenges them to navigate multiple ethical dilemmas in a fictional workplace, using critical thinking to make informed decisions.
  • Reflection and Code of Conduct Creation: Students wrap up the workbook by reflecting on what they’ve learned and developing their own ethical code of conduct for a workplace.

Why This Resource is Essential for Your Classroom:

  • Promotes Deeper Learning: Engages students in meaningful conversations about ethics, integrity, and responsibility in the workplace.
  • Critical Thinking: Students are encouraged to evaluate multiple perspectives, consider consequences, and make well-informed decisions.
  • Real-World Application: Helps students recognize the importance of ethics in professional environments, setting them up for success in their future careers.
  • Versatile Tool: Perfect for use as an engaging lesson, homework, or sub plans.

This resource Includes 10 sections, each focusing on a unique ethical challenge, and culminates in a final activity where students apply everything they’ve learned. The workbook is a great tool for fostering deeper learning, critical thinking, and discussions, and can also be used as sub plans for independent work.

Scenarios Include:

  1. The "Borrowed" Supplies: When Does Borrowing Become Stealing?
A coworker takes office supplies home without permission, insisting it’s just borrowing. Students explore the difference between borrowing and stealing and discuss its impact on workplace culture and trust.
  2. The Time Clock Tango: Rounding Hours & Clocking In Early
Some employees clock in early or out late to gain extra pay. Students debate whether this practice is a minor issue or qualifies as time theft, and explore its effects on both employees and employers.
  3. The Copycat Caper: Avoiding Plagiarism in the Workplace
Under pressure, an employee considers copying material from the internet without credit. Students reflect on the ethical implications of plagiarism in the workplace and its potential consequences.
  4. The White Lie Labyrinth: When to Be Honest vs. "Sugarcoat"
An employee is asked to promote a product known for poor quality. Students explore the balance between honesty and tact, and discuss when honesty should take priority over making a sale.
  5. The Expense Report Enigma: Separating Business from Personal
An employee adds a personal meal to a business expense report. Students evaluate the ethical line between legitimate business expenses and crossing into dishonest reporting.
  6. The Social Media Spy: When Online Monitoring Goes Too Far
An employer monitors personal social media accounts and disciplines an employee for off-work behavior. Students examine the balance between workplace policies and employees’ right to privacy.
  7. The Budget Blues: Cutting Corners vs. Ethical Practices
A manager suggests cutting safety measures to save money. Students weigh the benefits of cost-cutting against the risks to safety and quality in a business environment.
  8. The Discount Dilemma: Using Employee Discounts Ethically
A coworker uses their employee discount for friends and family, despite company policy. Students reflect on the fairness and ethics of using employee benefits for non-employees.
  9. The Overtime Conundrum: Working Hard vs. Burning Out
An employee is overwhelmed with extra work but doesn’t want to say no. Students explore how to balance hard work with maintaining mental and physical health to avoid burnout.
  10. The Customer Complaint Charade: Fact or Fabrication?
Some coworkers fabricate customer complaints to gain refunds or discounts. Students discuss the ethical consequences of dishonesty in customer service and its impact on business integrity.

Sentence diagramming is so helpful when teaching students parts of speech and sentence structure. The repetitiveness of diagramming for a bell ringer is extremely beneficial for students. I tried grammar workbooks for years, but my students hardly retained anything. Daily sentence diagramming made them remember their parts of speech, and was an amazing foundation for my students to have when we started forming different types of sentences. They picked up on fixing run-ons quickly as well because of their diagramming foundation.

End of Year ELA Escape Room - Pop Culture Edition

By Language Arts Excellence

If you are looking for the perfect way to end the school year and send your students off to summer vacation on a high note, look no further than this End of Year Escape Room for ELA - Pop Culture Edition!

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length ELA Escape Room. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task, but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. Plus, all tasks are skills-based and aligned to the Common Core so that with the escape room, learning is not sacrificed. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game!

How does it work?

In order to graduate from your ELA class and make it to summer vacation, your students must escape your classroom by solving 5 different Language Arts skills-based puzzles, discovering a hidden message, and finding clues along the way. Your students will appreciate how each puzzle incorporates pop culture and truly "speaks their language."

  • In the first task, students must correctly order the plot events of a Taylor Swift song and place them on Freytag's Pyramid. The shaded boxes on the plot diagram reveal the first code.
  • In the second task, students must identify parts of speech in different inspirational quotes from celebrities like Emma Watson, Jennifer Lawrence, and Michael B. Jordan. When matched correctly, shaded boxes reveal the second code.
  • In the third task, students must identify the figurative language device used in pop songs by current artists like Shawn Mendes, Ariana Grande, and Imagine Dragons. Shaded boxes in the correct answers form the third code.
  • In the fourth task, students must complete a fallen phrase by Drake. Shaded boxes in the completed inspirational quote reveal the code.
  • In the fifth and final task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle with a famous inspirational quote. (We can't give that away here!)
