This resource is a printable lesson plan designed for high school geometry classes. It includes materials on geometry segment length in circles resource, making it ideal for teaching these concepts effectively. It can be implemented in various ways in the classroom, either as a group activity or individual work. Includes a modified version for differentiation. Low prep for teachers- just print and distribute.

Introduce the lesson to the whole group, then assign as independent or small group work. Monitor progress and provide support where needed. This resource really helped my students understand segment length in geometry. The modified version was great for catering to all learners.

UNDERSTANDING & READING GRAPHS & CHARTS IN GEOGRAPHY

INTRODUCTION ACTIVITY

This lesson is an introductory lesson to (1) prepare students and a climate students with the different types of graphs and charts, (2) to understand the difference between a graph and a chart, (3) begin learning to decipher the data each represents and (4) how each represents the data.

OBJECTIVE:
o The learner will understand the difference between a graph and a chart and will be able to identify each.
o The learner will recognize 14 graphs and/or charts.
o The learner will interpret 14 graphs and/or charts.

MATERIALS:

o Reading Activity: (2 pages) Is it a Graph or Chart? (Included)
o 14 Graph & Map Stations (Included)
o List of graphs & charts (Included)
o Laminate- Laminate all 14 stations and list of graphs and charts for future use and

durability. o Blue painters tape to display stations on the wall throughout the

classroom
o Rulers for each station for students to use in reading the graphs.
o Student answer sheet, one per student or one per team to save paper and ink.

o Exit Cards (Included)
o Timer to measure time at each station.

PREPARATION:

Laminate each station and the list of chart and graph names for each station. The list of chart and graph names will be used as a reference for students. Prepare each station with a ruler and any other supplies that may be needed.

INTRODUCTION:
Either show an introduction video (there are some suggestions below) or have students participate in the introduction activity.

PROCEDURE:
Reading Activity: Organize the class into teams of 2-4, at the teacher’s discretion. Have student groups read and discuss the student reading activity (2 pages included).

Carousel Activity: Student groups will rotate from one station to the next answering four (4) questions at each station and identifying each graph and/or chart. Based on the information provided in the reading on how to determine a graph and/or chart, students will identify each station as a graph or chart, how the data is being displayed, the name of the graph or chart, and provide an interpretation of each. Provide groups 3 minutes at each station; use a timer. You may cut down on the number of stations if- your class time is more limited. Students will work together to complete the questions for each station on their Student Answer Sheet. When the timer goes off, all groups will move on to the next station. Once the carousel activity is complete, display each chart and answer and discuss them together allowing students to correct their answers.

CLOSURE / EVALUATION:
Have students complete and submit an Exit Card

ENRICHMENT REVIEW ACTIVITY:
Have students choose a topic and create their own chart or graph as a home assignment for extra credit. They can present and display them in the classroom the next day.

Modular Arithmetic is a central part of the RSA Public Key Cryptosystem and mathematicians, programmers and students who encrypt data will use it all the time.

It is important that students know (and that teachers always remind them) when they are busy with these topics, that they are learning fundamental mathematics needed to encrypt data and secret messages.

A simple skills poster that aims to explain, in simple terms, what an Irrational Number is. One important distinction of irrational numbers, is that even if a number sometimes might go on to infinity, it doesn't mean that it is an irrational number. "The Answers Are..." is a great Non-Curricular Thinking Task your secondary math students can all access, no matter their skill level. Each task card gives a number bank with 10 integers and 5 target answers your students must create. Using each number in the bank only one time each, students work in random teams of three to create all 5 expressions by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. It's more challenging than you might think!

This assessment can be utilized to identify a baseline for individuals around their knowledge of money. This assessment explores an individual’s ability to identify coins and notes, explores value, the ability to count money and budget. This assessment is divided into seven specific areas and each area can be used in isolation to each other, or together to form a comprehensive assessment.

These areas include:

1. Basic Numeracy Skills

2.Written amounts

3.Colour recognition and value

4.Coin and note recognition

5.Budgeting assessment

6.Monetary values

7.Budgeting

It is ideal that all sections are completed to give a general picture of the level of skills the Student currently has. The assessor needs to complete the scores in each section as well as placing a comment next to the score. It is important that the assessor provides a comment so that all relevant material can be extracted, and the most appropriate program be designed for each Student.

SCORING - the assessor is to place a number score into the column next to the question. The scores go from 1 - 3 depending on the skill of the Student.

1. Completed independently - i.e., no assistance at all from the assessor, (no verbal or gestural prompts).

2. Completed with assistance - i.e., assessor may need to verbally prompt or point to correct response.

3. Can not do - even with prompts the Student is unable to complete correct response.

From the baseline a money recognition / budget program can be developed to meet the individual needs of each Student.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED - The assessor will need to have the following equipment available prior to commencing the assessment:

• Money in the form of coins and notes up to the value of $100.00. Should you not have the physical money, this resource includes the options to print a paper copy of the coins/notes which will suffice.

• A printed copy of this assessment and associated worksheets.

NOTE: This assessment is designed for Australian audiences as it uses Australian money.

I taught the students how to do 2-point perspective with step-by-step slides. Students started on their Final Copy paper and created their own version of my example.
