Calendar Talk - Mon Journal Quotidien with Conversation Cards
By Cheryl Bennett
The Calendar Talk - Conversation Cards and Daily Journal Writing: Vocabulary Builders is designed to help students start reading and writing immediately to discuss the day, date, and weather. Students can also begin speaking in the same class period with some guidance.
Product includes:
A set of vibrant and thought-provoking conversation cards featuring a wide range of vocabulary words.
Each card contains a vocabulary word and picture as a visual aid.
There are 8 weather terms on the conversation cards as well as the slides.
3 Journal pages total -
One with information about how to write and discuss days and dates. A good journal to start with for the first few days.
Two with day, date, and weather (one in color and one black and white)
The weather journal includes pictures of weather along with a related prompt or question to encourage writing, discussion and critical thinking.
Lists of possible ways to use the vocabulary and activities to be used today
Key Features:
How to Use:
(See embedded video in slide as well.)
Bell Ringers - Daily Journals for French class.
Day 1: Show them the presentation and model for them.
Day 2:
Print, copy, and have them ready for students as they walk in.
Saving on paper? Copy machine never works? Download the slide as a png and have students write on them on a touchscreen device or their own papers. My students use the app Chrome Canvas on their Chromebooks. I loan styluses to students during class. They aren’t too expensive. Some students just write with their fingers.
Day 2: Discuss the responses as a class. If you need to repeat Day 1 for the talking part for a few days, that’s okay. They will get it.
Days 3-5: Continue discussing responses after the journal each day. This will help them with writing and speaking.
Days 6 and on (or when you know they are ready): When used consistently, students will be able to speak with the phrases very quickly. Have them sit in groups and discuss their journals as you walk around the room. I often keep track of points on Class Dojo and give them a goal to shoot for.
Scaffold so that students will be able to talk without the journal eventually.
Use the words and phrases that they have learned in other activities.
Add the questions and answers to write stories as a class or individually. I tell students to include the day, date, weather, etc in all of their stories.
Ask students what another student said work on other perspectives, i.e. I, you, he, she, etc.
Student A: C’est mercredi.
Student B: Elle dit, «C’est mercredi.»

French AI School Vocabulary Conversation Project Using ChatGPT!
By Churros and Croissants
Unlock the possibilities of using artificial intelligence (AI) in your French classroom! Students will learn how to program ChatGPT to act as a new friend named AndreAI from Belgium. They will embark on a captivating language-learning journey with AndreAI by joining in an immersive conversation about their school, subjects, supplies, teachers, and more.
As students engage in roleplay with their new language partner, they will receive valuable individualized feedback to refine their French speaking skills. Once they have completed at least 10 exchanges and taken time to reflect on the pros and cons of practicing language with AI, they will create a slide presentation, offering them a deeper understanding of 21st-century language learning. Together, let's blend the magic of AI with the beauty of the French language and witness the incredible possibilities unfold!
Topics covered in this project are inquiry-based and can be tailored to your curriculum but may include:
-Greetings/Introductions
-School Subjects
-School Supplies
-Personal Descriptions
-Time/Ordinal Numbers
This project is the perfect culmination to a unit on school vocabulary in Middle School Foundations of French, French I, or French II. It can also be modified for more advanced students.
If AI is restricted on student computers, this can be completed as a class using smartboard projection.
*The use of AI in this teaching project is solely intended for educational purposes and does not replace the guidance and expertise of a qualified human instructor. While AI can provide valuable insights and assistance, it may have limitations in understanding the individual needs of students. It is essential for educators to exercise discernment and adapt AI tools responsibly in the learning process. Students and teachers are encouraged to collaborate and prioritize human interaction for a well-rounded and personalized educational experience.

30 End of the Year French Awards - Class Superlatives and Recognition for All
By Cheryl Bennett
30 DIFFERENT AWARDS! This resource is a great way to end the year and to acknowledge each student for their unique abilities. The best part of being in a CI classroom is the community it builds. Choose the awards yourself or have the students vote using the Google Form for Student Voting. Each award has the French feminine and masculine forms. The awards can be applied to French class or simply observations about students in other areas of their lives. Let the students know that they have been seen for more than what is going on while they are in your room.
Note: The award for proficiency levels progressed is an award that I, as the teacher, would give but if you feel like students are able to give it, you can leave it on the google form. The google form can be edited and it is not necessary to give every award.
The slides are in both full sheet form as well as half sheets (with the feminine and masculine forms on the same slide) to save paper. All pictures are in black and white and look great on colored paper.
