French Christmas Sentence Building Cards-Writing and Phonics-Écriture de Noël

By La trousse de Madame

Students delight in creating unique and funny sentence patterns using a 1-2-3 step strategy. Students use cards marked ’1’ to choose the subject of their sentence, cards with ‘2’ are the action words, and cards with location words are tagged ‘3’. Put together the subject, verb, and location cards and make a new sentence each time. Teaching writing in your Grade 1-3 French Immersion class has never been easier.

What to do:

Make a class set of the cards, laminate, and cut.

Place a few copies of the 1-2-3 writing template sheet into clear pockets or give students an individual worksheet to work on.

Watch students delight in creating new and unique sentences as they build confidence in their French writing skills.

Vocabulary included: La Mère Noël, Le Père Noël, Le garçon, La fille, Le renne, Le nain, descend, porte, vole, place, grimpe, mange, une boule, un ange, un cadeau, un sac de jouets, un bas, une étoile, un biscuit, un pain d’épice, une canne de Noël, une chandelle, un chocolat chaud, des lumières, dans la cheminée, dans le bas, dans le ciel, dans le traineau, dans le foyer, dans l’arbre

How to prepare this resource:

Make a few copies of the template page, insert into clear pockets, dry erase pocket, or use as individual worksheets and watch as the giggles get started. Make a copy of the story cards, laminate, and cut. My students LOVE these activities. I cannot make them fast enough.

There is a little cutting and laminating involved with this activity but many use clear folders to make your job easier!

Perfect for a sub binder, emergency plans, or as a back up activity when you happen to have a few minutes to spare. A great set to have on hand as an extra centre activity at Xmas time. Your K-3 Immersion students will love them!

When to use this resource in the classroom:

These activity sheets are Christmas themed and can be used for the entire month of December and even into the week following Halloween. Students love using them and they can be helpful for follow-up assessment. Just in time for progress reporting period!

I hope your students enjoy learning their vowel sounds and exploring phonemic awareness with a Christmas Theme!

Appropriate audience:

I use these activities in my French Immersion classroom with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students. I feel confident that they could be used for any grade from Grade One to Grade Three.

French Professions/Les Professions Vocabulary Activities/Practice/Emergency Sub!

By Churros and Croissants

Be prepared for absences with this hassle-free, print-and-go lesson plan that will keep your students engaged and quietly focused on independent learning. This emergency sub lesson plan is packed with fun and interactive activities that will enrich your students' French Job vocabulary. Here's what's included in this ready-to-use resource:

  1. Vocabulary List: Kickstart the lesson with a curated list of 25 French Job-themed words.
  2. Repetition-Based Learning: Utilize the power of repetition to solidify vocabulary retention. Students will practice writing place words multiple times, enhancing their memory and fluency.
  3. Decoding Secret Message: Pictorial symbols provide visual cues that help learners associate meaning with the target language vocabulary. By decoding a message using symbols, learners reinforce their understanding of the language's visual representation.
  4. Short Answer: Provide an opportunity for students to apply the vocabulary in meaningful ways. By constructing responses, students connect the vocabulary to specific contexts, demonstrating their understanding of how the words are used. This application helps with recall and enhances their ability to use it effectively.
  5. Code Breaker: Decoding the vocabulary is like solving a puzzle. It encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills as learners work to match the symbols to the correct letters to form vocabulary while providing ongoing review and reinforcement.
  6. Matching: Learners make connections between words and their translations. By actively associating and pairing words together, learners establish meaningful connections that enhance their understanding and retention of vocabulary.
  7. Crossword Puzzle: When students create a crossword puzzle, they actively engage with the vocabulary words. They must think about the meanings of the words, consider their spelling, and create clues that correspond to each word. This active involvement promotes deeper processing and understanding of the vocabulary.
  8. Magic Square: Learners must analyze the available options and find the correct matches. This process stimulates critical thinking, encourages logical reasoning, and enhances cognitive skills, all while reinforcing the vocabulary.

Keep your students engaged and quietly learning even if your substitute has ZERO French skills!

*Answer key is included only for the Secret Message, Magic Square and Short Answer activities. Answers will vary for other activities.

The Calendar Talk - Conversation Cards and Daily Journal Writing: Vocabulary Builders is designed to help students start reading and writing immediately to discuss the day, date, and weather as well as FEELINGS! Students can also begin speaking in the same class period with some guidance.

Product includes:

  • A set of vibrant and thought-provoking conversation cards featuring a wide range of vocabulary words.

  • Each card contains a vocabulary word and picture as a visual aid.

  • There are 9 terms on the conversation cards as well as the slides.

  • 3 Different Journal pages total -

  • One with information about how to write and discuss feelings. A good journal to start with for the first few days.

  • Two with feelings vocabulary (one in color and one black and white)

  • Daily journals include calendar talk questions - Day, Date, and Weather

  • The feelings journal includes pictures of feelings/facial expressions along with a related prompt or question to encourage writing, discussion and critical thinking.

  • Lists of possible ways to use the vocabulary and activities to be used today

Key Features:

  • Comprehensive Vocabulary Coverage: Explore a diverse array of vocabulary words across various themes and subjects.
  • Differentiated Learning: Suitable for learners of different proficiency levels, with options for scaffolded or extension activities.
  • Printable and Digital Formats: Accessible in Google Slides. Google slides can be downloaded as images to be used as digital worksheets or downloaded as a PDF.

How to Use:

(See embedded video in slide as well.)

Bell Ringers - Daily Journals for French class.

  1. Day 1:  Show them the presentation and model for them.

  2. Day 2:

  3. Print, copy, and have them ready for students as they walk in.

  4. Saving on paper? Copy machine never works? Download the slide as a png and have students write on them on a touchscreen device or their own papers. My students use the app Chrome Canvas on their Chromebooks. I loan styluses to students during class. They aren’t too expensive. Some students just write with their fingers. (Please see my terms of use for using digital downloads.)

  5. Day 2: Discuss the responses as a class. If you need to repeat Day 1 for the talking part for a few days, that’s okay. They will get it.

  6. Days 3-5: Continue discussing responses after the journal each day. This will help them with writing and speaking.

  7. Days 6 and on (or when you know they are ready): When used consistently, students will be able to speak with the phrases very quickly. Have them sit in groups and discuss their journals as you walk around the room. I often keep track of points on Class Dojo and give them a goal to shoot for.

  8. Scaffold so that students will be able to talk without the journal eventually.

  9. Use the words and phrases that they have learned in other activities.

  10. Add the questions and answers to write stories as a class or individually. I tell students to include the day, date, weather, etc. in all of their stories.

  11. Ask students what another student said work on other perspectives, i.e. I, you, he, she, etc.

  12. Student A: Je me sens triste.

  13. Student B: Elle dit, «Je me sens triste.» or «Elle se sent triste.»

For Conversation:

  1. Day 1:  Show them the presentation and model for them.

  2. Every day: Start with the journal at the beginning of each period. I usually do this for a few weeks. It will help with the conversation cards.

  3. Day 2: Discuss the responses as a class.

  4. Scaffold - Gradually, have students talk without the aid of the journal. I generally let students use their journals for 2 or 3 weeks, depending on the level, before having them talk without their work in front of them.

  5. Slide 13 - Ask, Ask, Trade- Each student gets a card and switches cards throughout the activity to practice various types of weather..

  6. Student A: «Comment est-ce que tu te sens?» (Or teach the formal «Comment est-ce que vous vous sentez?» (This could be on the board in front  so students can refer back to it as they learn it.)

  7. Student B (who has a happy face): , “Je me sens heureux.” or “heureuse.”  Then Student B asks: “Comment est-ce que tu te sens?”

  8. Student A (who has a sad card): “Je me sens triste.”

  9. Students A and B exchange cards and find new partners.

  10. During Ask, Ask, Trade- After students have had more practice with the cards, have them tell new partners what previous partners said. (Ex: Je me sens triste mais Sarah se sens grincheuse.)

  11. Win, Lose, or Draw: Draw a conversation card from a pile. Draw it on the board and class guesses. Students or the teacher can draw.

  12. Aïe! Game Instructions are included when slides are in “edit” mode.

Benefits for Students:

  • Enhances vocabulary acquisition and retention through active engagement.

French Speaking Picture or Photo Description Chatty Mat Learning Aid Guide

By LanguageMeisterLab

This two-sided chatty mat (sentence builder) is a learning aid aimed at developing speaking skills in French. It is aimed at helping learners structure their description of a picture (People, Location, Activity) in a methodical way so that they have a structure they can rely on. You can see the preview of the first page in the listing.

The resource offers a very clear structure, range of vocabulary for a range of picture scenarios, as well as a range of general conversation questions with sample answers.

A few Ideas/Suggestions on How to Use This Resource:

  1. Adapt the Resource – Before introducing this resource to your students, you may wish to tweak it to better suit their needs.
  2. Introduce and Expand Vocabulary – Go through the vocabulary with your students, identifying and labeling unfamiliar words in their native language. This can be done section by section or for the entire table, depending on your students and circumstances. Encourage them to add any additional relevant vocabulary!
  3. Model Photo Descriptions – Demonstrate how to describe a photo, either yourself or together with students. Use PLA (People, Location, Action) and the acronym WhoWheRAC (Who, Where, Relationship, Appearance, Location) to guide their descriptions of people.
  4. Encourage Regular Practice – Give students frequent opportunities to describe photos using the resource. An effective approach is to describe multiple photos in one single session, as this reinforces structured descriptions, boosts confidence and enhances motivation.
  5. Incorporate Written Practice – If feasible, get students to write a photo description as homework using the resource as a guide. :)

FRENCH PHONICS- Science of Reading Screener- Assessment Tool- FRENCH REPORTING

By La trousse de Madame

This assessment tool provides a tailored and effective method for evaluating and enhancing students' reading abilities, ultimately promoting literacy success in the French K-2 classroom. By incorporating the principles of the Science of Reading, this tool ensures a systematic and evidence-based approach to evaluating reading progress.

Phonemic awareness, which focuses on recognizing and manipulating individual sound in words, is integrated to improve French students' ability to decode and spell words accurately. Additionally, phonological awareness, which involves understanding the sound structure of language is emphasized to enhance overall language and reading skills.

I developed this with a dear friend long ago so we could easily keep track of our assessments for Kindergarten students. Flash forward a few years (many years, actually) and I have now been able to incorporate my knowledge of Science of Reading and concepts from the resources we use in our Province to assess students learning French in a variety of learning environments.

I now teach a group of Grade 1s and a group of Grade 2s and use this assessment tool 3 times a year! Game changer!

How to use this:

Make enough copies for each student in your classroom and assign an assessment binder for data collection.

I use the first two sheets at the beginning of the year in order to inform where my reading program needs to start.

Use the tool throughout the school year to chart progress and to see areas of concern

You can also start to see trends and areas of need where you may need to review certain sounds as a whole class or perhaps a small group.

What's in the resource?

- 8 Assessment pages

-simple sounds, alphabet sounds that are in random order

-les sons complexes: ou, on, an, in, oin, eu, au, eau, etc

-beginning blends: ba, pi, to, gu, etc.

-CVC combinations

-nonsense syllables that test the decoding skills of students once they have mastered the basic sounds and complex sounds

-data tracking boxes at the bottom of each page for three times a year of evaluation

-quick reference so you can track each students' trajectory

What grade level is appropriate?

I use this resource in my Grade 1 and 2 classrooms and our Kindergarten team use this resource at the end of term 1 and end of the year for data collection.

FRENCH MATHS | JEU/GAME | J'AI QUI A | VALEUR DE POSITION | NOMBRE ENTIER

30 End of the Year French Awards - Class Superlatives and Recognition for All

By Cheryl Bennett

30 DIFFERENT AWARDS! This resource is a great way to end the year and to acknowledge each student for their unique abilities. The best part of being in a CI classroom is the community it builds. Choose the awards yourself or have the students vote using the Google Form for Student Voting. Each award has the French feminine and masculine forms. The awards can be applied to French class or simply observations about students in other areas of their lives. Let the students know that they have been seen for more than what is going on while they are in your room.

Note: The award for proficiency levels progressed is an award that I, as the teacher, would give but if you feel like students are able to give it, you can leave it on the google form. The google form can be edited and it is not necessary to give every award.

The slides are in both full sheet form as well as half sheets (with the feminine and masculine forms on the same slide) to save paper. All pictures are in black and white and look great on colored paper.

Included:
