First Day of School "Language Talk"

By Language Arts Excellence

Whether you teach Spanish, French, German, or Mandarin Chinese, this is the perfect lesson to get your students thinking about the purpose of studying foreign languages!

This product features an engaging "Language Talk" activity that will have your new students thinking, writing, speaking, and moving on the very first day of school. In this activity, they must choose between 6 different quotes about the purpose of learning languages and articulate why the quote aligns with their perspective. I use this lesson every year to set the tone for what I expect in class - it is a great way to gain insight about their current attitudes towards speaking another language while they get to know one another with a higher level thinking activity as opposed to the same-old, same-old icebreaker.

Product includes:

  • Comprehensive Lesson Plan
  • "Language" Sheet for students to fill out
  • 6 Corresponding "Language Quote" signs to hang up around your room

Though I utilize this product on the first day of school, it really can be used all year long. I hope that it is as successful in your class as it is in mine!

  2. Repetition-Based Learning: Utilize the power of repetition to solidify vocabulary retention. Students will practice writing place words multiple times, enhancing their memory and fluency.
  3. Decoding Secret Message: Pictorial symbols provide visual cues that help learners associate meaning with the target language vocabulary. By decoding a message using symbols, learners reinforce their understanding of the language's visual representation.

  6. Matching: Learners make connections between words and their translations. By actively associating and pairing words together, learners establish meaningful connections that enhance their understanding and retention of vocabulary.
  7. Crossword Puzzle: When students create a crossword puzzle, they actively engage with the vocabulary words. They must think about the meanings of the words, consider their spelling, and create clues that correspond to each word. This active involvement promotes deeper processing and understanding of the vocabulary.
  8. Magic Square: Learners must analyze the available options and find the correct matches. This process stimulates critical thinking, encourages logical reasoning, and enhances cognitive skills, all while reinforcing the vocabulary.

French grammar lesson - French IR verbs

By Frenchified

Do you need a quick grammar lesson on French -ir verbs? This powerpoint and handouts explain the concept clearly and concisely with more detail and examples than most textbooks have. Go through the powerpoint with your students as they take notes on the handouts. Includes examples in context with a reading passage about climbing defensive castles.

Many textbooks do not include enough examples of using IR verbs, or they don't show the verbs in use in any meaningful way. This French grammar lesson plan will guide your students by introducing the most basic concept then building on it with examples and practice activities.  Students are then challenged to "level up" by changing a passage in the singular form to the plural.  Once you've learned how to use IR verbs, the reading activity will show them in action - learn about the purpose and history of defensive castles.

This item includes:

  • Printable pdf handouts for students -
  • explanation of how to conjugate -ir verbs
  • Practice activity for -ir verbs in the singular and plural
  • "Level Up" activity - change a paragraph written in the singular form to the plural form
  • Reading activity about defensive castles that uses many IR verbs
  • Answer key
  • Powerpoint that includes explanation of the grammar on the printables and the reading passage

French BON BIEN MEILLEUR MIEUX - French Challenge Task Cards Activity

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

French Practice Cards: BON - BIEN - MEILLEUR - MIEUX

This is a set of 25 cards for practicing and mastering BON - BIEN - MEILLEUR - MIEUX. This set of cards uses bon and bien as well as their comparative forms meilleur and mieux, but also a whole lot more (see below). That's why this stack of cards is great for upper-intermediate and even advanced students!

This resource is included in my Bon - Bien - Meilleur - Mieux Bundle.

This resource does not incorporate the superlative. When using meilleur and mieux, we are really focusing on how to say "better" in French. This is always so hard since we use the same word in English whether we are using adverbs or adjectives. I have also made a 45 minute video that you can find on YouTube that would be perfect to show before pulling out these cards which I made specifically to accompany this very comprehensive lesson.

You may also be interested in my other set of cards that also uses the superlative.

Included:

  • Set of 25 cards to print and cut out + answer key
  • Set of the same 25 cards with only one per page for use on tablets or for projecting
  • Student answer recording sheet

This resource is included in my Ça y est, je parle français! French 3 curriculum bundle!

Print your Guy - French movie talk script and activities

By Frenchified

What happens when you can't find the perfect man? Have one made by a factory, of course! Unfortunately, things don't quite work out that well in this movietalk for French learners.

This item includes a pre and post viewing activity worksheet for students, a teacher instruction page, a story script and an answer key as well as a link to the video. Also includes link to a set of textivate activities. Students can do the activities without an account, but if you would like to track student work you will need a paid teacher account.

This is easily suitable for level 1 second semester or level 2.

The target vocabulary is:

un mec - a guy, a dude
commande - orders
une boîte - a box, a can
à l’usine - to the factory
ils s’entendent bien - they get along well
