Figurative Language Short Passage Sets are a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! These figurative language passage sets are rigorous, use higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that is based on the key figures that helped to abolish slavery and are studied in the 4th grade curriculum. Students will read about Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Samuel Cornish, William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth, John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony and Harriet Beecher Stowe. This activity will have students reading about how each individual aided the abolition movement. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code.

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!

This is a complete 90-minute lesson dedicated to the Black History Month. February is Black History Month. This month-long observance in the US and Canada is a chance to celebrate Black achievement and provide a fresh reminder to take stock of where systemic racism persists and give visibility to the people and organizations creating change.

African Americans have played a central role in shaping U.S. history. From slavery and its abolition to the Great Migration, the civil rights movement and military, scientific, cultural and political achievements, explore key moments, milestones and figures in Black History.

The lesson involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. All tasks are Language Arts skills-based so that with this engaging lesson, learning is not sacrificed; in fact, students will come away from it with a greater understanding about the major contributions, achievements, and literary works of Black Americans.

How does it work?

Your students will work to complete 5 language arts-based tasks about Black History Month.

• Notable & Quotable: In the first task, students will read 8 quotes that are significant to the study of Black History. Students must identify the word spelled incorrectly in each quote and write it correctly in boxes on their answer sheet.

• Black History Facts: In the second task, students will find 7 facts about Black History Month. To reveal the code, they must identify the part of speech of the underlined word within each passage.

• Black Ocean: In the third task, must correctly identify the figurative language devices in passages of poetry by renowned Black poets.

• A Dream Deferred: In the fourth task, students will perform a close reading of Langston Hughes’ Harlem and answer multiple choice questions about the poem.

• Famous Firsts: Complete the word search of famous firsts by Black Americans by searching for the last name of each figure. Once all names have been found, the letters that remain form a quote by Martin Luther King, Jr. Once students bring this to you, they have completed the activity!

If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

There are various activities for your students to do before, while, and after watching the video. The lesson last 90 minutes and it is designed mostly for Elementary school students. • Crossword: In the first task, students must complete a crossword puzzle about plot events, characters, quotes, and story details from The Color Purple.
• Guess Who: In the second task, students match characters with their descriptions.
• Quote Me On This: In the third task, students must match characters with their notable quotes from the novel.
• Pop Quiz: In the fourth task, students must answer multiple choice questions about the story.
• Jig Saw Quote: In the fifth and final task, students must complete a jig saw puzzle that reveals a quote from The Color Purple. Students must write down the quote and show it to you to escape.
