Geography: The Road To The White House: Electoral College (PowerPoint Included)

What does the United States Constitution say about electing a U.S. President and Vice President? How were they originally elected and what led to the changes in our system, leading to developing the Electoral College? It is essential that our students, as future voters, understand how our President and Vice President are elected every four years through the Electoral College. Students will explore, analyze, and summarize political parties using various avenues. In addition, they will look at the Electoral Process system and how events in history led to the ratification of the 12th Amendment. The lesson begins with a Road to the White House PowerPoint and Doodle Notes and a discussion, a student cooperative reading activity, a creation of the perfect candidate, and more.

OBJECTIVES:
(1) The learner will analyze the processes involved the reasons we use the electoral college system of presidential selection and the strategy required for a successful victory.
(2) The learner will decipher the difference between the popular vote and the Electoral College as a means of electing government officials.
(3) The learner will evaluate the importance in the ratification of Amendment 12 in establishing a process for electing the President.
(4) The learner will use the information gained through the lessons to work cooperatively and create their perfect candidate.
(5) The learner will track the election process and calculate the outcome.
(6) The learner will research two upcoming candidates and compare their views and stances.

In this product, students will learn how California was controlled by Mexico, who signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and what it meant once it was signed, what territory Mexico gave up, John Sutter - how he was the richest person during this time in California, what he hoped to accomplish, what was built on Sutter's 48,827 acres, why his dream was unsuccessful, and what caused this to happen, who found the first piece of gold in the American River, who James Marshall was and why he was hired by Sutter, Sam Brennan and what he did to become very rich, how much money Brennan earned, who the 49ers were and what they did to try to become rich, and traveling across the country in search of gold - Oregon-California Trail or an ocean voyage - the difficulties that were faced taking both of these routes. Students will also learn about where the Oregon-California Trail started and where it ended, the route that was taken if travelers on the East coast wanted to travel West and the continent they would travel around, what travelers had to do/and how long they had to wait for their turn to look for gold, how many people searched for gold in 1848 and 1849, how searching for gold was easy and then it became more challenging as more time went on, how and why the population of California increased and decreased during and after the California Gold Rush, how much money in gold was found in the American River during The California Gold Rush.
Vocabulary reviewed, but is not limited to the following: merchant, sawmill, gold panning, 49ers, and bandits along the Oregon-California Trail.

In this product, students will learn about what happened after the delegates signed the United States Constitution, how The Bill of Rights came about, who approved it, and when it was approved, and The Bill of Rights that include the first 10 amendments to the Constitution of the United States.
The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. After reviewing and discussing the notes, students will answer comprehension questions to review what was discussed on previous pages, students will read The Bill of Rights and answer questions based on them. After reviewing and discussing the notes, they will answer comprehension questions to review what was discussed on previous pages, students will read charts, The Bill of Rights, and the 3 Branches of Government chart, and answer questions based on each of these provided. At the end of the product, students are provided with a review that includes multiple choice questions, short answer questions, and will choose 1 of the 10 Amendments in The Bill of Rights and write about why they think it is important.

This product was made for students to learn the following: Vocabulary words - delegates, compromise, federal system, two houses of Congress - Senate and House of Representatives, the three branches of government - Executive, Judicial, and Legislative Branch
In this product, students will learn about delegates - who they were and what they did, and how long they worked to create the United States Constitution, the delegates disagreed with one another, but they did disagree on what should be included in the Constitution, why they disagreed with one another, and how they came to a compromise, Congress - where it is located, who meets in the United States Capitol building - the two houses - the Senate and the House of Representatives - how they were different based on members, length of terms, age for members, organization, and how many per state, the federal government and what they do and what the state government and what they do, the three branches of government - Executive, Judicial, and Legislative Branch - what they do, how they are different, how they work together, and how they each have specific jobs, and the system of Checks and Balances that is followed within the government and why.
The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. After reviewing and discussing the notes, they will answer comprehension questions to review what was discussed on previous pages, students will read the 3 Branches of Government chart, and answer questions based on each of these provided.
