Spelling Lesson

Spelling words for fifth grade students. This contains 30 lists of 15 words each, 6 lists of 20 words for review, which can be divided out over the course of the year, and 3 lists of final review containing 25 words. Practice the differences between the -ge/-dge word ending. Example lesson provides practice in phonological awareness, guided practice, connection to word meaning, reading of text.

This packet has activities and visuals to support practice with demonstrating understanding of why we use -ge or a -dge ending.

• Students will sort words/pictures with the -ge/-dge ending
• Students can practice writing / or selecting the appropriate word ending.

Looking for an activity to help students work on decoding and encoding simultaneously? Short u Flip, Tap, Write, Build, Use resource helps students practice just that.

How? Students flip a picture card over, these are focused on a specific phonics pattern, to get their word. Next students work on tapping out the sound. They can use the Elkonin boxes or the guide dots to help track the sounds tapped. After they will build the words by writing a letter for each sound made and using letter tiles(that are provided, so no need to search or organize tiles, just print, cut, and use). Lastly, the student uses the word to create a sentence.

This activity makes for a great center, small group work, independent practice, and even homework.

Need a way to hold them accountable?

No worries, there is a recording sheet available where students can record a few of their flips. All they have to do is write the word and the sentence on the sheet. This gives you a glimpse into their understanding and insures that they are indeed working during center, small group, and independent work time.

One of the best ways to begin teaching letters at a young age, is by using your student's names. Something that belongs to them!

Practice name building and letter identification using these editable FALL name puzzles. This resource include templates for names that are 2-11 letters long. If a child's name is long, consider writing 2 letters per piece.

Ways to use based on student skills:
